Anything Outdoors Helping Kids board members would
like to thank everyone for making our first annual Fall
Festival a success. The event was held on September
9th at the Knights of Columbus Hall and Duckroost
Seafood & Deli in St. Amant. We are excited to say that
we raised $12,000 at the Fall Festival. All the proceeds
will go to helping Louisiana children with life threatening
diseases, St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital in
Memphis, TN, and Our Lady of the Lake Childrens
Hospital.

Heberts Specialty Meat held a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
on Tuesday, August 15th to celebrate their opening in
Ascension Parish at 13375 Highway 73, Geismar.
Heberts, home of the original deboned stuffed chicken, is
owned and operated by Mike Stone and Jesse Benedetto.
Their cajun flair of unique seasonings, marinades,
stuffings, and cooking processes allow them to produce
delicious products. They have all the cajun favorites,
deboned stuffed chickens, turduckens, deboned stuffed
turkeys, shrimp or crawfish etoufee, boudin, gumbos and
soups, seafood and meat pies, au gratins, a variety of
sausages, a large selection of stuffed meats and
so much more.
Heberts starts with a selection of the finest products
available. The timely combination of cooking and s
easonings creates the authentic cajun flavor. Their primary

Garden Club
Promotes
Plant America
The Gonzales Garden Club began its 2017-18
season at the home of Lorraine Gautreau on
September 6. This was the 31st consecutive
year that Mrs. Gautreau has hosted a club meet-
ing. Twenty-one active members, three associ-
ate members and one guest attended the
gathering. Newly elected GGC President Jamie
Trisler presided over the business meeting.
Gonzales Garden Club Historian Ellen Rich-

The club has adopted the National Garden
Clubs theme of Plant America, which is a plan
to encourage civic gardening through a grant
program for local garden clubs who cultivate
public spaces. The focus of this particular club
meeting was Plant America Beginning at Home.

It's with a heavy heart I write
tonight. I have family in my
home from St. Pete, Florida,
running from Hurricane Irma.
I have friends in Houston
helping people rebuild after
Harvey, and it's also 911.
When I get to see and hear of
people, ie- Cajun Navy, law
enforcement officials, EMS,
firefighters and those with brave
hearts and willing souls, helping
the helpless in devastating
situations, it gives me hope. It
makes me think that with love,
anything is possible. We are
truly the hands and feet of a
loving and generous God, if we
listen and obey Him. It makes
brave men and women during
their most difficult times.
Mission 6 helps veterans find
employment, assist in finding
counseling services and even
give them some long overdue
fun with special one on one or
group kayak fishing trips!
Mission 6 started a little over a
year ago, has five directors and
more than 15 volunteers. To

green was chosen (over 100ft putt) for the

The human papilloma virus
(HPV) is the most common
sexually transmitted disease in
the United States, with
14 million new cases each year.
According to the CDC, there
are more than 40 types of
HPV, but most are cleared
from the body by the immune
system without causing any
health problems.
Still, some types of HPV affect
the mouth and throat. Low-risk
strains can cause mouth or
throat warts, but high-risk
strains are associated with head
and neck cancers (also known as
oropharyngeal cancers) that
affect the mouth, throat, tonsils
and back of the tongue. Oral
cancer is just one type of head
and neck cancer. Data from the
CDC indicates that about 7% of
people have oral HPV, but only
1% have the type of oral HPV
found in head and neck cancers.

Guardianship,
Mental Incapacity
and the Right
to Vote
All U.S. citizens have a
federally guaranteed right to
vote, but those under
guardianship (what is called
interdiction in Louisiana)
may not have that right.
Although things are slowly
changing, some states,
including Louisiana, still deny
citizens the right to vote if
they have been declared
mentally incompetent, and this

or not they actually lack the
mental capacity to vote.
Many people with special
needs who are perfectly
capable of voting have
appointed guardians usually
their parents so that they can
continue to be cared for into
adulthood. But, depending on
the state, being under
guardianship may mean that in
the eyes of the law they lack
mental capacity and cant vote.
Mental incapacity is generally
defined as the inability based
on mental illness, intellectual
disability, or mental impair-
ment of any sort, to reasonably
carry on the everyday affairs of
life or to care for ones person
or property. The rationale for
the denial of voting rights is
that people with mental
incapacity do not understand
the nature of voting and are

vulnerable to being
manipulated.
However, with better
understanding of the nature of
certain disabilities and the
advent of civil rights advocacy,
these mental incapacity laws
are now being called into
question as unfair and unlawful
restrictions on the rights of
voters with disabilities. More
people with disabilities now
have the right to vote and the
right to choose a person to
assist them with voting, and
cannot be barred from voting
by anyone other than a judge.
Still, determining the voting
rights of a particular individual
with disabilities is complicated.
The overwhelming majority of
states have progressive laws
about the right to vote or have
decided not to enforce
outdated laws. Twenty-five
states, including Arizona,
Connecticut, Florida,
Maryland, New Jersey, New
York, Ohio and Texas, provide
that incapacitated persons shall
retain their right to vote unless
expressly limited by a court
order, although some states
require the individual to
petition a court to determine
their voting rights.
Eleven states, including Illinois
and Pennsylvania, have no
disability-related restrictions
on the right to vote in their
state constitutions or election
laws. However, as of 2016, the
constitutions of 10 states still
automatically ban anyone
declared mentally incompetent
which includes anyone under
guardianship -- from voting.
These states are Alabama,
Louisiana, Massachusetts,
Minnesota, Missouri, South
Carolina, South Dakota,
Tennessee, Utah and Virginia,
with some exceptions. In
particular, agencies or courts in
Massachusetts, Virginia and
Minnesota have subsequently
issued opinions that individuals
under guardianship do have
the right to vote unless the
guardianship decree contains
an express order otherwise.
Some states are taking steps to
restore voting rights to those
with disabilities who were
previously routinely denied.
For example, after a civil rights
complaint was brought,
California enacted a law to
restore rights to individuals
under guardianship who
notified the court of their
desire to vote. These
individuals need only petition
the court and say they want
to vote, even if their means of
communication requires
reasonable disability
accommodations to do so.
Unless a judge determines in a
hearing, with clear and
convincing evidence, that the
person had not communicated
their desire to vote, the judge
has to restore the right to vote.
The laws are moving in the
direction of presuming that an
individual with mental i
mpairment has the right to
vote, unless proven otherwise.
Therefore, parents and
guardians should check with a
qualified special needs attorney
about the current local laws
regarding the right of those
with special needs to vote.
Obtaining guardianship is a
very important way to protect
a loved one and in most States
will not automatically result in
the loss of voting rights. The
Bazelon Center and the
National Disability Rights
Network have created a voting
guide to help people with
mental disabilities understand
their rights, and the guide
includes a chart of state laws.

 From Cancelled Trips
to Campus Tips

Editors Note- First and
foremost, our thoughts and
prayers are with the people
affected by the devastating
storms that have occurred
recently. Here in South
Louisiana, we are painfully
aware of the heartbreaking
losses that winds and
flooding can cause.
This column was supposed to
be about Bill and Dustins
Excellent Adventure to see
LSUs opening football game in
Houston the first week in
September. Through the
generosity of a mutual friend,
we had suite tickets for the
game, two nights at the Marriot
and a parking pass so close that
even I could have thrown a
football into NRG Stadium.
The story was also to have
included our successful stop in
Lake Charles where Dustin won
a fortune at the Golden Nugget
and I scored my first hole-in-
one at the LAuberge golf
course. There would have also
been details of the raucous
tailgating party at Walk-Ons in
Houston where we had VIP
passes and, of course, highlights
of the big Tiger victory.
But, alas, Harvey had other
plans. What that hurricane did
to East Texas is a tragedy. Our
loss of a fun-filled weekend is
just a shame.
So, changing horses in the
middle of a stream (no pun
intended), I decided to divert
from a trip that never was to
some tips for college as a public
service to some of our younger
readers. And if it jolts a few
memories from our seniors col-
lege days, well thats cool too
When my favorite bowler Jack
Douglas (son of two of my
favorite people Tommy and Pat
and brother of my favorite
former softball catcher Emily)
announced he would be
attending ULL, I felt obliged to
warn him of a couple of pitfalls
that had led to my dishonorable
discharge from the then named
USL in the 60s.
Jack, I said in my best
counseling voice, look out for
fast women and slow horses.
That started my brain racing
(faster than some of those nags
I bet) and I realized as a retired
educator that I needed to alert
those now entering universities
for the first time about some of
the dangers that lurk ahead in
any college town.
Now remember-my
experiences are from the 60s-a
different time for sure-so Ill
leave out some of the mind-al-
tering experiences of which Im
not proud of and cant
remember anyway. And a few
are dreadfully outdated but
youll get the hint. So, just
hitting on the highlights-or
lowlights-lets begin with the
obvious
1. Fast women- Imagine a
6-2, 150 pound, 17-year old
bean pole from Prairieville, away
from home for the first time,
strolling onto a strange campus
with about 10,000 good-
looking women. Now there
were plenty of pretty girls in
Ascension Parish back then (and
still are today), but in that era,
many of them hooked up with
a steady boyfriend in high
school-or earlier-and got
married soon after they
graduated.
So the sheer number of single,
attractive women in one place
was overwhelming for a country
boy to say the least. I was
reminded of an old Marvelettes
song Too Many Fish in the
Sea with the line, Short
ones, tall ones, fine ones, kind

ones and believe they had
my rod-hook, line and sinker.
All those Cajun cuties were a
distraction to say the least.
2. Slow horses- I really cant
blame Lafayette and Evangeline
Downs for introducing me to
horse racing. My Uncle Harry
placed a 2-dollar bet on the
Kentucky Derby for me when
I was nine years old when he
claimed a horse named Tim
Tam was a cinch to win.
When Tim Tam came dancing
in ahead of the field, I was the
richest kid in Prairieville with a
windfall payoff of nine sawmill
dollars.
Apparently Harry had more
than two bucks on the horse
because I have a first cousin
named Tim Tam Bullion.
But going to the track was
certainly a convenient
alternative to studying on
Thursday, Friday and Saturday
night. And even in the
off-season, there were Sunday
races at the bush tracks in
Sunset and Erath that were far
more entertaining than that
term paper you were going to
write on Sunday afternoon.

Matthau for further reference.
3. Bouree- I cant hold
Lafayette responsible for this
vice either but when the nickel
card games in the dorm grew
boring, the lure of bigger games
downtown began to call my
name. In a place called
Voorhies one night, I was
playing in a 50 cent ante game
(a fortune back then, especially
if you had to match the pot)
when I drew the ace, king,
queen of trumps-a cinch
winner. I laid the three cards
down as Ascension rules
required and dragged the pot
but not before some scathing
words from my older
opponents.
 Hey, sport, said one in a
heavy Cajun accent. The next
time you play those cards one at
a time. There aint no need to
show us up.
I replied very meekly that I
certainly would and bought
everyone a beer with my
winnings.
The next night I was playing
in a bar called Dixies (Are you
starting to see why my grades
werent Deans List material?)
and I drew the same hand.
Remembering my lesson from
the night before, I played the
ace, allowed everyone else to
play, and then played the king
and the queen in the
same manner.
Hey, sport,-had I heard that
voice before? The next time
you lay down those three
cinches. There aint no need to
show us up.
Sometimes, even when I lost,
I felt lucky to get out of those
games alive.
And buy me a beer one day
and Ill tell you how I passed
trig at a poker game at the
Swinging Machine.
4. Night Life- Yeah, yeah,
this one could be on any list of
any college in the country. But
Lafayette had such great music
on weekday nights that it was
almost impossible to stay in and
study when the citys sirens
were luring you with sweet
songs.
On any given night you could
catch the Boogie Kings with
G.G. Shinn or T.K. Im Not a
Fool Hulin or Little Bob and
the Lollipops who had a hit
song called Purple Raindrops
long before Prince. One night
at the Roof Garden, Bob played
a song that-unbeknownst to
me-was a popular tune for locals
to do the alligator dance to.
When he sang the chorus,
Everybody, you got to hit the
floor now the bartender and
I were the only ones left
standing-and him only because
he was serving drinks. The next
time I was ready.
And if the ladies in distraction
number one werent enough,
Lafayette was notorious for the
Wild Bill and South Louisiana legend G.G. Shinn reminisce
about Bill's "lost years" in Lafayette.

5. Steely Dan- The recent
death of Walter Becker-one-half
of Steely Dan-reminded me of
still another musical reason I
missed so many classes. I had
brought my old acoustic guitar
to Lafayette to play a few of my
old country chords when I
discovered the guy next door
Bob Richardson had an electric
Fender complete with amp.
The next time I went home,
I loaded up my Silvertone-the
one with the amp in the
case-and hooked up with Bob
for some late night jam sessions
that once again proved a fun
alternative to reading
psychology. Then along came
Becker and Donald Fagens
classic Reeling in the Years.
We spent countless hours
trying to learn the killer lead
guitar solo in that song
performed by Elliott Randall-
never quite succeeding, but
giving it that old college try.
Led Zeppelins legendary
Jimmy Page once called that
ride his favorite guitar solo of all
time so we were dealing with
the classics-it just wasnt Charles
Dickens and Henry David
Thoreau.
6. Glen Campbell- Same
song-different verse. When
Glen passed away last month,
I thought about the time I
purchased the sheet music for
Gentle on My Mind from
Prof. Ernies music store in
Lafayette because I couldnt
convert writer John Hartfords
banjo chords to the guitar.
Bob and the rest of his New
Orleans buddies were busy
working on some Eric Clapton
songs from the new Cream
album and poked fun at me for
being so country. At any time
of the day or night, one of the
Yats might stick his head in my
door and say in a mocking
drawl, Hi, Im Glen

Campbell,-the signature
opening line from Glens
successful TV show.
But one day I came home
from class (Hey, I did make a
few.) and heard some familiar
guitar sounds coming from my
room. To my surprise, there
was Bob with my sheet music
doing a passable Gentle on
My Mind.
Very interesting progression
for a country song, was his
only explanation.
Not long after, the song
became a crossover hit on the
pop charts and Bob was
vindicated. It goes without
saying but if we had put as
much time in our studies as
playing our guitars, we would
have been Rhodes Scholars.
7. Festivals in Surrounding
Towns- Okay, what do you want
to do this weekend? Sit in a
dorm room and read Tale of
Two Cities or go to the Sugar
Cane Festival in New Iberia?
Or the Crawfish Festival in
Breaux Bridge? Or the Rice
Festival in Crowley? Or-my
personal favorite-the Frog
Festival in Rayne?
How in the Dickens was I
supposed to study literature
with all those parties going on?
I could go on about other
distractions but I think you get
the point. Just the fact that I
made it three glorious years in
Lafayette is a minor miracle in
itself. And by the way, my last
year there in 1968, Playboy
magazine voted USL the
number one party school in the
nation-the first time such an
honor had gone to a small
school.
In 1969 I tryansferred to LSU
at the urging of my parents
and the dean of men at
Southwestern. Playboys
number one party school for
that year? You guessed
it-Louisiana State.
Coincidence? I think not.

Head East -Not This Time
For a short span of my life I
had the incredible experience of
working as a deckhand on a off-
shore commercial fishing vessel
out of Grand Isle, LA. When I
was not able to make the hitch I
would give my spot to a close
friend of mine that was unem-
ployed at the time. I remember
asking him on one instance after
their return the question;
"Where did y'all go?" Like it
was yesterday I can still remem-
ber his reply, "I don't know,
Doc said we'll head east like he
always says".
With the exception of the
Atchafalaya Basin /Lake Verret
area, most of the anglers from
our area including myself head
east and south for their fishing
adventures. Why not, you usu-
ally catch all you want from
these waters. Toledo Bend and
Caney Lake do draw somewhat
of a crowd from our area in
search of a real trophy large
mouth. It's been my experience
that a whole lot of us don't re-
ally realize just how great the
fishing is above I-10, not to
mention the salt water fishing in
west LA.
About once a year I have the

Our family had the exciting
ceremony of my niece Amy
Lambert getting married to
Scott Hammon.
It was a great evening and the
event was beautiful. Amy is the
daughter of Brian Butchy
Lambert and his wife Donna.
Scott showed up a couple of
years ago and started dating
Amy. Then he kept showing up
at family events. I met him a
couple of times a year and liked
everything about him but he
was from Ohio. The state that
houses Ohio State not my
favorite football foe for LSU
football. All-in-all he seemed to
be a great guy.
As I got to know him I heard
stories about their relationship
and how it came to pass. It
turns out his initial sightings of
Amy intrigued him with her
beauty but I found out later,
Butch, his new father-in-law,
had taken him red and speck
fishing in Port Forchan and
apparently he was hooked on
South Louisiana forever.
At the reception all of the
standard ceremonies played out
and then we witnessed the
cutting of the grooms cake.
Scotts family gathered around
the cake and seemed to start a
Buckeye chant. It was a very
nice, well done cake in the shape
of the Ohio State logo. As I
watched the cutting of the cake
my grimm images of Ohio State
came to life. The inside of the
cake was purple and gold. What
a beautiful surprise and sight. I
ate the cake and left the icing.
I have a new connection to
The Buckeye state and want to
welcome all of Scotts family to
our Cajun family. I think it is
perfect match. Plus he has a
great duck dog, Tripp. However
Amy may remind him one day.

The Ghost of Dixie Past
Dixie was a black & white cat
from my past that seems to still
haunt me. You see while mar-
ried, many years ago, my wife
brought a second cat into the
house and it had a problem
finding the litter box.
Like most reasonable people I
objected to the smell and finally
put my foot down and declared
that Dixie was going to be an
outside cat. I then picked the
stinky cat up and gave it a soft
toss out the front door. Dixie
took issue and took off running.
Right into the street into on
coming traffic.

My name is Jonathan Stuart

being your new Head Golf
Professional. I am currently
living in Wisconsin with my
wife, Megan, but originally I
am from Gainesville, Florida.
Megan and I are thrilled to be
living in Louisiana and
experiencing the best of what
Louisiana has to offer

Recently, I have been working
as one of the Senior Assistant
Golf Professionals at Westmoor
Country Club in Brookfield,
Wisconsin. Westmoor hired me
4 years ago to oversee the daily
operations as well as organize all
club tournaments. Before my
tenure at Westmoor Country
Club, I spent several years
working at the Disney
properties as one of the lead
golf professionals. I spent
majority of my time at the Palm
and Magnolia Golf Courses.
During the past winters I was enhancing junior golf at the our youngest members and

 Ingredients:
Cooking Gourmet at Home 2 tbsp butter
with SNOS SEAFOOD & STEAKS 8 ounces andouille sausage,
cut into inch slices
2 tbsp ground paprika
1 tbsp ground cumin
tsp cayenne pepper
cup diced tomatoes
1 large green bell pepper,
diced
2 stalks celery, sliced
inch thick
4 green onions, thinly sliced
1 tsp salt
1 bay leaf
1 cup uncooked brown rice
3 cups chicken stock
1 pound large shrimp,
peeled & deveined
Salt & ground black pepper
to taste

Instructions:
1. Place butter and sausage in a large stockpot over medium heat;
cook and stir for 5 minutes until sausage begins to brown.

2. Stir in paprika, cumin, and cayenne; cook for 1 minute

SHRIMP AND SAUSAGE JAMBALAYA 3. Stir tomatoes, onions, celery, green pepper, green onions, salt
and bay leaf into sausage mixture.
Prep: 4. Add brown rice and stir to combine. Stir in chicken stock and
20 minutes turn heat to low. Cover and cook for until rice is just tender,
Cook Time: about 45 minutes.
1 hr. 10mins 5. Stir in shrimp, replace lid and cook for 5 minutes.
Servings:
