Egg Osmosis Lab

Question 1:
Vinegar is made of acetic acid and water. When the egg was placed in vinegar, which way did
the molecules move? How do you know this?

The vinegar is a hypotonic solution, and the egg got larger. The data shows that on day one the
eggs mass was 66.2 g and on day 2 it blew up to 100.7g. The mass of the unicellular egg
increased by 34%. The data continues to show that from the 200mL of vinegar added in the
beaker, only 125 mL is left. So the egg took in 75 mL or 37% of the vinegar from the beaker.

Question 2:
After the egg was placed in the syrup, which way did the water molecules move-in or out of the
egg? Using the correct terminology describe what conditions exist for the egg.

The syrup is a hypertonic solution, and the egg shriveled. The data shows that the eggs mass
on day 2 after being put in vinegar was 100.7g and after being put in the syrup, the mass
decreased by 35% to 66.2. So it returned to normal. Also the data shows that amount of syrup
increased. Originally only 200mL was added, but the next day there was 225 mL. So syrup in
the beaker increased by 13%.

Question 3:
How can you explain the amount of liquid remaining after the egg was removed from the syrup?

There was more syrup in the beaker after taking out the egg due to osmosis between the egg
and the syrup. Since there was a higher concentration of water molecules in the egg, they
traveled to the syrup, the area of low concentration. The data shows that after osmosis occurred
the amount of syrup went from 200mL to 225mL, an increase of 13%, and the mass of the egg
also decreased.

Question 4:
When the egg was placed in the water after being removed from the syrup, which way did the
water move?

The water is a hypotonic solution and the egg once again got larger. The data verifies this
because the mass of the egg went from 66.2g to 102.1g. The eggs mass was increased by 35%
. Also the data shows that the from the 200mL of water in the beaker, only 150 mL was left so
the volume of water decreased 25 percent, and the egg took in 50mL of water from the beaker.

Question 5:
Was your hypothesis validated? Explain why or why not.
Hypothesis: if and egg is placed inside a substance such as vinegar or syrup, then osmosis will
occur then osmosis will occur because of the uneven areas of concentration that create a
hypotonic or hypertonic solution.
My hypothesis is validated because the data shows that whenever there was a high
concentration of water molecules in the solution (hypotonic) the eggs mass got bigger and there
was less of the substance in the beaker. Likewise, when there was a higher concentration of
water in the egg (hypertonic) the eggs mass got less and the substance in the beaker increased
because of osmosis.
