CHENNAI: The transfer of land by the revenue department to the Chennai

Metropolitan Development Authority at Urapakkam has raised hopes that
a satellite bus terminus for south-bound buses will nally come up in the
area.

A bus terminus at Urapakkam was originally mooted three years ago, but
the plan was dropped in the wake of litigation by a housing rm seeking
ownership for the property. Following this, the revenue department sent a
proposal to the CMDA to consider 50 acres of land belonging to a temple
at Nandivaram for the purpose in March this year. Even as the government
was pursuing the proposal, the Supreme Court gave a favourable verdict
to the revenue department over the disputed land at Urapakkam. The
revenue department immediately transferred 88.5 acres of land to CMDA two days back.

"It will boost the real estate market in the locality," said Vijayagopal, a resident of Urapakkam. Noting that a few information
technology companies have set up shop in the area recently, he said that the move to establish a bus terminal would fuel
further growth in the area.

Shanmugam, a relationship manager marketing biomedical products, said the terminus would ease trac bottlenecks at
Perungalathur. "I usually board a bus at Koyambedu to the southern districts. Crossing Perungalathur during trac jams is a
pain. So, a bus terminus at Urappakam is a welcome idea," he said.

According to CMDA sources, the land has been taken over by the planning body. A top ocial, however, said that though it was
an ideal location, a nal decision to shift the proposed bus terminus to Urapakkam was still pending.

State-owned transport corporation ocials said it would help crew members reduce their work pressure. "Presently, a good
portion of their resting time is wasted on roads due to acute trac jams on the outskirts of Chennai and in Perungalathur in
particular," the TNSTC ocial noted.
