QuickhitchesshouldbeinspectedatsixmonthlyintervalsinaccordancewithLOLER
Introduction Aquickhitchisalatchdevicedesignedtofacilitatetheefficientconnectionandremovalof
attachments(suchasbuckets,grapplesandrockbreakers)toplantandequipment.Itis
oftenaffixedtotheendofthedipperarmofanexcavator,asameansofenablingdifferent
typesandsizesofexcavatorbucket(forexample)tobechangedatwill.
AccordingtoHealthandSafetyExecutive(HSE)figures,13%ofallaccidentsinvestigatedon
excavatorsareattributedtothebucketdetachingfromaquickhitchandinjuringaground
worker.TheHSEbelievequickhitchfailuresarerelativelycommonandincidentsare
frequentlymajorandsometimesfatal.

Requiresthedrivertoleavethecabanddriveasafetypinthroughtheexcavatorarmand
bucketandforthispinthentobelockedonplaceitselfwithapin.
Europeanmanufacturersagreedtoceasesupplyofsemiautomaticquickhitchesin
October2008. Thisdoesnotmeanthatallsemiautomatichitchesbecame.HSEacceptthat
whenusedinaccordancewithmanufacturersinstructionssemiautomaticquickhitches
canstillbeusedsafely.

CommonReasons ReasonsprovidedbyHSEforQuickHitchesnotbeingusedcorrectly:
Operatormayonoccasionfailtofitthesafetypininordertoreducethe
ForFailure changeovertime.
TheoperatormaynothavebeenadequatelytrainedintheuseofQuick
Hitches.
Apinmaynotbeavailable,havingbeenlostormisplaced.
Somehitcheshavetwoholesforthesafetypin.
Theexcavatorisworkinginpoorconditions(e.g.mud,heavyrain)
SafetyChecks Placingtheemphasisonthereceivingengineeronsitemaycausedelaysand
encourageuncontrolledriskstobetakeninanefforttogetthejobdone.Abetter
approachwouldbetoconsidersafetyatthemomentofhirewherethefollowing
itemscanbecheckedanddiscussedwiththeprovider.
Ifyouarehiringplantanddriverfromalargerplanthirecompany,theyshouldbeable
toprovideyouwithawrittenriskassessmentcoveringtherisktositestaff.Thismust
covertheriskfrombucketdetachmentasaresultofquickhitchfailuresandoperators
mustbeinpossessionofavalidCPCSorequivalentcard.Thesedonotensure
competencewithaquickhitchsoshouldbesupplementedwithevidenceoftrainingin
theparticulartypeofhitchinuse.
Clearevidenceofequipmentmaintenanceinlinewithmanufacturerguidancemustbe
seen.Inadditiontotheregularserviceanddailymaintenancechecksrequiredfor
excavators,quickhitchesshouldhaveathoroughexaminationandinspectionatsix
monthlyintervalsastheyareclassifiedasliftingaccessoriesundertheLifting
OperationsandLiftingEquipmentRegulations(LOLER).
Ifyouarehiringanexcavatorwithdriverforuseonsite,youmustensurethe
contractorhasadequatepublicliabilityinsurance.
SafeSystemofWork Anysafesystemofworkandriskassessment,eitherfromtheplanthireroryourown,
mustincludeanoutlineofhowstaffareinstructedandtrainedtoremainclearofthe
excavatorbucketwhileinuseandwheretostand.Thisistheprimarymethodofrisk
managementandmakessurethatifthebucketbecomesdetached,thereisnoriskof
injury.
