Gerunds represent activities such as,


habits, hobbies, routines and recreational
activities.

Sometimes gerunds represent adjectives


(descriptions).
Form
A gerund is the base form of a verb + -ing.
Gerunds can be used as nouns.

verb + -ing = noun

work + -ing = working

pay + -ing = paying

improve + -ing = improving


Gerunds
1.- Gerunds can be used as the subject of a sentence (the
principal idea).

Smoking is bad for you. Eating junk food isnt healthy.


Reading is fun. Learning English is difficult.

2.- Gerunds can be used after some specific verbs and


expressions such as: love, like, enjoy, (be) crazy about,
cant stand, hate etc.

She loves reading. Marks crazy about singing.


We like cooking barbecue. I hate waking up early.

activities. We normally use go + gerund
