NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY PRESENTS THE SEGOVIA CLASSICAL

GUITAR SERIES
Northwestern Universitys Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music, in conjunction with the
Chicago Classical Guitar Society, presents the Segovia Classical Guitar Series, a multitude of
concerts featuring guitarists Marcin Dylla, SoloDuo: Matteo Mela and Lorenzo Micheli, Thibaut
Garcia, Raphaella Smits and Hopkinson Smith, throughout the 2016-17 season.

The concerts will be held on the universitys Evanston campus at the Galvin Recital Hall, located
in the Ryan Center for the Musical Arts, 70 Arts Cir Drive, as noted below.

On Saturday, November 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Galvin Recital Hall, Polish guitarist Marcin Dylla
kicks off the Segovia Classical Guitar Series with Mauro Giulianis Sonata in C Major, Op. 15,
Heitor Villa-Lobos Five Preludes, Roberto Sierras Sonata para Guitarra, Manuel Maria
Ponces Theme, Variations, and Fuge on Folia de Espaa and Benjamin Brittens Nocturnal,
Op. 70. Dylla has won 19 first prizes at prestigious international music competitions, including
the Gold Medal at the 2007 Guitar Foundation of America International Competition in Los
Angeles. His Naxos CD recording and live recital video for Mel Bay publications reached the
Naxos Top 10 Best-Selling Albums in September 2008. Tickets are $30 for the general public
and $10 for students with a valid ID.

On Saturday, February 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Galvin Recital Hall, the Segovia Classical Guitar
Series continues with SoloDuo: made up of Italian guitarists Matteo Mela and Lorenzo Micheli.
They will be performing ADD PROGRAM HERE. As SoloDuo, Mela and Micheli have
performed throughout Europe, Asia, the United States, Canada, and Latin America. Soundboard
magazine praised their 2014 recording Metamorphasis as flawless technique and musicianship,
coupled with warm and insightful musicality, a first rate musical experience. Tickets are $30 for
the general public and $10 for students with a valid ID.

On Saturday, March 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Galvin Recital Hall, French guitarist Thibaut Garcia
continues the Segovia Classical Guitar Series with ADD PROGRAM HERE. The 21-year-old
Garcia has already won first prizes at numerous international competitions, including Germanys
Ann Amalia, Romanias Terra Siculorum and Spains Jos Toms, Valle de Egs and IV Sevilla
International Guitar Competitions. This fall, he begins a 50-concert tour of the United States and
Canada. Tickets are $30 for the general public and $10 for students with a valid ID.

On Friday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Galvin Recital Hall, Belgian guitarist Raphaella Smits
continues the Segovia Classical Guitar Series with ADD PROGRAM HERE. In 1986, Smits
was the first woman to win first prize at Spains Certamen Internacional de Guitarra Francisco
Trrega. In addition to performing concerts on nearly every continent, Smith has made 17
critically acclaimed recordings for Accent Records. She is currently the chair of Belgiums
Lemmens Institute and regularly gives master classes throughout Europe, North America, South
America and Japan. Tickets are $30 for the general public and $10 for students with a valid ID.

On Friday, May 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Galvin Recital Hall, American lutenist Hopkinson Smith
wraps up the 2016-17 Segovia Classical Guitar Series with ADD PROGRAM HERE. Since the
1980s, Smith has focused on solo music for early plucked instruments, including the vihuela,
Renaissance lute, Renaissance guitar, Baroque guitar and the Baroque lute. Smith gives concerts
and master classes throughout Europe, North and South America and currently teaches at the
Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, Switzerland. Tickets are $30 for the general public and $10
for students with a valid ID.
