3s. what is the distance travelled by an elementary particle in laboratory
frame.

2. Sketch in the same graph the variation of momentum with the velocity for the
non relativistic particle having mass m and relativistic particle having mass m
3. Compute the rest mass and momentum of photon of energy 0.4eV
4. The total energy of the electron is 0.961MeV. Calculate its momentum and
speed.
5. An electron is moving with a speed of 0.6c in the positive x-direction. It is
observed by an observer moving in the same direction with speed 0.1C. What
is the momentum of the electron according to the observer?
6. An air plane is moving with respect to the earth at a speed of 600m/sits proper
length is 50m. By how much will it appear to be shortened to an observer on
earth?
7. Give two examples for conserved quantity and invariant quantity.
8. How does a proton gain mass when accelerated to a kinetic energy at
100MeV?
9. How the terms redshift and blue shift are related to the relativistic Doppler
Effect.
10. A body at rest spontaneously breaks into two parts each of mass 1.0 kg that
move apart at a sped of 0.5C relative to the original body . Find the mass of
the original body.
11. Calculate the speed of the particle whose total energy is exactly twice the rest
energy

12. The mass of the moving electron is 11 times its rest mass. Calculate the kinetic
energy of the electron.

300m and 4X10-7s.How fast must be moving relative to the observer in order
that events may be simultaneous to another observer (O)
14. In a reference frame, a particle has Kinetic energy 525.4 KeV and
momentum901.6KeV/C. Find its rest mass.

15. Suppose the Doppler shift in the sodium D2 line (5890A) is 100 A, when the
light is observed from the distant star. Calculate the stars velocity in recession.
Part-B (2X10=20 marks)

16. Deduce an expression for the kinetic energy of a particle that is moving with
at relativistic speed and show that it reduces to classical expression when
v<<C (b) Using Lorentz transformation equations deduce an expression for
longitudinal and transverse Doppler Effect.

17. Derive Lorentz transformation equation based on the Einsteins postulate of

special theory of relativity.(b)A radioactive nucleus moving with a speed of
0.4c with respect to the laboratory emits a -particle with a velocity 0.8c
relative to the co-ordinate system in which the nucleus is at rest. Calculate its
speed with respect to the laboratory, if the -particle is emitted with respect to
the nucleus (a) in the direction of motion of the nucleus relative to the
laboratory and (b) perpendicular to the direction of motion?
