Preface
EPC Flexible Publishing is one of the systems developed by DaimlerChrysler AG together with its specialist partners, and
is used by the parts divisions of DaimlerChrysler AG and its partners to determine part numbers automatically.
The user documentation is combined with the "EPC Flexible Publishing" course to provide you with the knowledge you need
to make optimum use of the "EPC".
General issues relating to the EPC are presented in a comprehensible way and illustrated with text and pictures.
A clear list of contents provides you with quick access to the individual sections in this documentation.
A detailed, alphabetical index facilitates access to all the important terms used in this text.

1 General
With the "EPC Flexible Publishing" system, DaimlerChrysler AG aims to improve the availability and usefulness of the parts
documentation on the screen by optimizing access and using automatic evaluations in conjunction with the data card.
EPC Flexible Publishing contains the parts documentation for the current commercial vehicle and passenger car ranges
since approx. 1962 and the vehicle data cards since approx. 1978.

2 Basics
i This section provides you with information that is an essential prerequisite for operating the EPC. It
explains the control elements in detail.
You can perform all actions in the EPC using the mouse or keyboard.
Right mouse button You click the right mouse button to trigger functions. This button performs the same function as
the R key.
Examples:
. Confirming inputs in input fields,
. Returning to screens which have a higher position in the hierarchy (e. g. returning from the
sub-group selection list to the group selection list),
. Closing submenus.
Middle mouse button i The middle mouse button does not have any functions in the EPC.
1 to ) Function keys The function keys 1 to ) correspond to the action buttons "F1" to "F12" in the
function bar on the screen. see Section "2.3.5 Function Bar".
C Control key The key combinations C and 1 to ) correspond to the action buttons "CF1"
+ + to "CF12" in the function bar on the screen.

A+4 Alt key Calls up the "Exit Menu" which displays a confirmation prompt before you exit

Function key
A+T Alt key You can switch between active programs using the key combination A + T
+ (tab) and without interrupting the current program.
Tab key i When you switch between programs, the programs remain active. The screen
settings and selections stay the same.
T Tab key . Opens the "World Manufacturer Code" submenu in the EPC initial screen.

. Moves the cursor forwards in the "Search" submenu.

G Delete Deactivates the selection * in selection lists with multiple selection (e. g. parts

1 System menu The "System menu" contains a selection of different functions, which enable you to move, min-
imize, maximize, close and change the size of the window.
2 Title bar Contains the title of the program. To move the program window, select the title bar, hold the
mouse button and drag the mouse pointer to the new position.
3 Window size If you move the mouse pointer to the corner or border of a window, the window changes its
shape. Press and hold the mouse button and move the mouse pointer to change the window
size as follows:
Corner of window = vertically and horizontally
Border of window = vertically or horizontally
4 Icon field The window is displayed as an icon which appears on the "Windows task bar". The program re-
mains active, and the current contents of your work remain unchanged. Use the key combina-
tion A + T or select the program icon from the "Windows task bar" to return to that
program.
5 Full screen/ Use this function to switch between full-screen view and original size (the window is displayed
Original size in its most recent dimensions).
8 Toolbar Contains action buttons (e. g. Print, Zoom...) which you can use to trigger functions.

9 Information area Contains information fields which vary, depending on the contents of the work area.
You cannot make any entries here. see Section "2.3.3 Information Area".
0 Work area This is where you interact with the EPC (e. g. inputs, selections, displays, requests, ...).
i The individual control elements are displayed in the work area, in accordance with the
screen. see Section "2.4 Control Elements".
a EPC message line Displays system messages (e. g. "No datacard available").

b Function bar Depending on the work area, this bar contains function buttons which can be used to trig-
ger or call up functions. see Section "2.3.5 Function Bar".
i By default, the function bar (also known as the function key strip) is not displayed
when you install the EPC.

i Some of the commands in the submenus of the menu bar may not always be available. This depends on the
screen currently displayed.
2.3.2 Toolbar
You can only operate the toolbar with the mouse. The toolbar contains action buttons for triggering functions. The buttons
displayed vary depending on the contents of the work area.
1 Print Calls up the "Print" submenu for setting the print options.

3 Cursor key down . Moves the selection bar down in a selection list.
. Moves the enlarged screen down.
c Copy parts to selected A star "*" appears in front of the selected list entry, and the part is copied to the
parts list "SELECTED PARTS LIST".

d Display User Notes User notes that are displayed in the illustrated page or for the part item can be called up
by selecting the "Display User Notes" icon.

SA Special version.
Displays the chosen SA number, stroke, and designation.
Class Displays the activated class e. g. CAR.

2 Information field An information field is generally displayed together with the page arrow. This field shows
the page currently displayed and the total number of pages.
Scrolling by page
1 List entry Element in a selection list. Each list entry generally has an abbreviation.
3 Input field For entering an abbreviation that is assigned to an entry in the selection list (e. g. group or sub-
group number, catalogue code, e. g. M=engine, ...).
2 Selection bar The selection bar displays the list entry that is currently selected.
Select the desired list entry with the left mouse button.
: An action is triggered.

3 Star "*" Indicates list entries that have already been selected.
2.4.6 Submenus
Some functions / actions call up submenus that contain additional functions. The submenu is displayed over part of the
current screen. As long as the submenu is open, you cannot edit the visible part of the work area behind this submenu. The
functions in the function bar, however, are still available.
Submenu The submenus contain action buttons, selection lists, input fields, and sometimes other control el-
ements.
Closing a submenu
Click the right mouse button.
: The submenu is closed.
Moving a submenu
s + oulr : The submenu moves in the appropriate direction.
Pop-up Menu Pop-up menus contain information that explains why they have been displayed. They may contain
decisions, which you have to acknowledge.
i Depending on the access path you have selected, you may be able to skip some of the levels shown in the fol-
lowing diagram, in other words, you do not have to make any entries here.
The diagram only represents a a very simplified overview of the possible access paths in the EPC. The following
sections cover the options and links in more detail.

Save Current List
You can access the individual catalogues by entering the following criteria:
. Vehicle ID no., aggregate ID no., or industrial engine ID no.
. Model no. (4, 5, 6 or 9-character)
. Type no. (3-character)
. Via Fast Access (vehicle ID no., aggregate ID no., model no. or type no.
together with a group or group/sub-group no. that is valid for the selection).
i Before entering a 14-character Vehicle Ident. Number, you have to choose the appropriate world manufacturer
code. see Section "4.1 World Manufacturer Code".
. Vehicle ID no./aggregate ID no./industrial engine ID no. together with the group no. or
group/sub-group no. (e. g. 2304751F001105.30).
i You should separate the group no. or group/sub-group no. with a period.
If a data card is available for the system, the valid class, models, SA used, and catalogues for
the product are determined automatically. The default filter function is set automatically.

If no data card has been stored, the message "No datacard available" appears in the EPC mes-
sage line. see Section "2.3.4 EPC Message Line".
. Model no. (4, 5, 6 or 9-character, e. g. 210004).
i If the EPC cannot determine the model from the model data entered, it opens the model index.

. Model no. (4-, 5- or 6-character) together with the group no. or group/sub-group no. (e. g.
230475.30).
i The group number or group/sub-group number
should be separated by a period.
. Type no. (3-character, e. g. 129).
. Type no. together with the group no. or group/sub-group no.
i If the EPC cannot determine from the entered type data
whether a type or an aggregate is required, the "AGG CHOICE" submenu is opened.

which class is to be selected, the class index is opened. see Section "6 Class Index".
You should make the appropriate entry in the input field without any blanks.
When entering data for fast access, make sure you enter a period in front of the group no. and the
sub-group no.! If you do not enter anything in the input field and confirm this with R or the right
mouse button, the class index will appear. see Section "6 Class Index".
WDB The default setting of the world manufacturer code can be defined during the initial installation.
To change the world manufacturer code, see Section "4.1 World Manufacturer Code".
F3 Chas Calls up the "FIN History" which contains a list of the type, model or Vehicle Ident. Numbers used last.
see Section "4.2 FIN History".
i Depending on the type of EPC data package that has been installed, the world manufacturer code appears in
black and can be selected, whereas the rest is gray and cannot be selected.
Or
T Call up the "World Manufacturer Code" submenu.
e. g. 4 Enter the item number of the desired world manufacturer code.
: The selection bar is automatically positioned on the desired world manufacturer code.
R or H Confirm.
: The submenu is closed and the world manufacturer code is entered in the EPC initial screen.
Or
ou Use the cursor keys in the initial screen, without opening the submenu.
: Goes to the world manufacturer code in the initial screen in the order listed in the submenu "World
Manufacturer Code".
i Likewise, the entries in the "FIN History" can be called up in WIS via the History function in "Infobox 1".
List entry For selecting the type, model or Vehicle Ident. Number you want.
OK Closes the "FIN History" and transfers the entry selected to the EPC initial screen.
Cancel Cancels the procedure and closes the "FIN History" without selecting an entry.
Help Calls up the Help text on "FIN History". see Section "2.5 Help (DaimlerChrysler EPC FP Help)".
5 Selecting an Aggregate
If the EPC cannot determine whether a type or an aggregate is required from the type no. entered in the initial EPC screen,
the "AGG CHOICE" submenu is displayed.
Choose Agg For entering the abbreviation of the desired aggregate (e. g. M for engine).

GM Catalogue: Mechanical Transmission
GA Catalogue: Automatic Transmission
P Catalogue: Platform
FH Catalogue: Cab/Body
LG Catalogue: Steering
V1 Catalogue: Front Axle 1

H1 Catalogue: Rear Axle 1
H2 Catalogue: Rear Axle 2
VG Catalogue: Transfer Case
FG Catalogue: Chassis
6 Class Index
Depending on the license code, the class index contains the following selection options:
. Car
. G-wagon
. Transporter
. Truck
. Bus
. Unimog
. MB-trac
. smart
. Powersystem
After you have chosen the class, the parts information offered is restricted to this class (e. g. passenger cars).
In the Workstation Configuration, you can choose which classes are to be displayed in the class index

7 Model Index
The selection list of the model index lists the corresponding models together with their sales designation and assigned
item number, according to
. Class
. Type
Only chassis or aggregate models (engine, automatic transmission, ...) are displayed in the selection list.
i The more precise the input data in the EPC initial screen, the fewer selection options displayed in the model
index.
1 List entry For selecting the appropriate model entry (e. g. 210055).
2 Filter Displays the model restrictions (3 to 5-character) that were specified in the EPC initial screen.
4 Catalogue For calling up a different catalogue that is available (e. g. M for engine catalogue).
i When you call up a different catalogue, the data displayed refers to the selected class.
5 Enter Item . For entering the item number assigned to the model in question.
(e. g. 14 for model 210055).
. For calling up a different model index
(e. g. M for engine).
i When you call up a different model index, the data displayed refers to the selected
class.
Deleting a character:
B : Deletes the last character (for correction).
7.1 Restricting the Model Index via the Sales Designation (VB)
To restrict (filter) the samples provided, you can narrow the selection list down to a particular sales designation.
1 Filter Displays the model restrictions (3 to 5-character) that were specified in the EPC initial screen.
3 VB Sales Desig- Switches the designation of the input field from "Enter Item" to "Enter VB". You can then enter a
nation sales designation or a part thereof.
4 Enter VB Enables you to restrict (filter) the models offered in the selection list by entering the sales desig-
nation or a part thereof (e. g. E320).
i VB = Sales Designation.
8 Catalogue Index
If several catalogues are valid for the current selection and the EPC cannot determine precisely which catalogue it should
access, it opens the "Catalogue Index".
The "Catalogue Index" lists all the catalogues that are valid for the selected model. You can access the appropriate cata-
logue by selecting a list entry.

9 Data Card
EPC Flexible Publishing contains the parts documentation for the current commercial vehicle and passenger car ranges
since approx. 1962 and the vehicle data cards since approx. 1978. Information from the data card is used to determine
which is the correct part (e.g. checking footnotes, validity, SAs, code, ...).
After you have entered a Vehicle Ident. Number, call up the data card as follows:
. Select the icon in the toolbar, or
. menu bar "Information/Datacard", or
. select "CF6 DataCard" in the function bar, or
. press keys S + 6.
i The prerequisite is that you enter a complete Vehicle Ident. Number in the EPC initial screen and that the data card
exists in the system.
EPC Flexible Publishing differentiates between the following data card displays:

. IMO (industrial engine) see Section "9.3 Industrial Engine Data Card (IMO)"
1 Basic vehicle data Contains information on the Ident. Numbers of the vehicle and its aggregates, the sales des-
ignation, job number and VIN (non-European Vehicle Ident. Number), if present.
2 Paint/Special Version Describes the color and equipment features of the vehicle.

3 Code/SA/ Describes the construction status of the vehicle. You can go to the "SA Stroke Index" by dou-

4 Find SA You can go from the data card to the "SA Stroke Index" as follows:
. Select the desired SA number and select the "Find SA" action button, or
. double-click on an SA number.
: The "SA Stroke Index" is opened. see Section "17 SA Stroke Index".
5 Production Order EPC distinguishes between a "Car Production Order" and a "Unimog, G/M-class Production
Order".
. Car Production Order
If a car has been specially equipped in accordance with the customer's wishes, it is pro-
vided with a Production Order. This is indicated by a tick sign in the "Production Order"
field. see Section "9.1.1 Car Production Order".
. Unimog, G/M-class Production Order
For Unimog, G and M-class, the information from the Production Order is included in the
data card and is therefore available within EPC. If a Production Order exists, it can be dis-
played by pressing the "Info Text" 7 action button.

6 Aggregate Variant When you select Aggregate Variant and press the H key (or double-click), the Aggregate
Variant, if applicable, is displayed in a submenu, indicated by a star (*) and transferred directly
to the Selected Parts List.
The Aggregate Variant is called up when you select the "Text" action button.

A value in the "ETV-BM" field indicates that an original aggregate has been replaced by an ag-
gregate variant, and only the replaced variant is available.
7 Info Text The "Info Text" action button is only active if a Production Order for Unimog, G or M-class
exists. In the case of Unimog, G and M-class, the information from the Production Order is
included in the data card and is therefore available within EPC. If a Production Order exists, it
can be displayed by pressing the "Info Text" action button.

8 Print Opens the "Print" submenu for printing out the complete data card.

11 Search
You can use the "Search" submenu to find individual parts in the EPC.
You can specify the following search criteria:
. Part number
. Part name
. Description (additional information on the part name),

i . Before the search, you should ensure that you have selected the catalogue that is assigned to the part.
Example: To find the engine dipstick, you must select the Engine Catalogue.
. When entering search terms, you should make sure that you use the correct syntax.
. You have to enter data in at least one of the two input fields "Part Number" and "Part Name".
If you enter information in more than one of the "Part Number," "Part Name," and "Description" fields, the
search is made using a logical AND operation.
. When entering a part number, you must ensure that you enter it in full.

Enter SA . For entering the complete SA/Components without the stroke (e.g. 508093). You should con-

13 Filter Menu
The "Filter Menu" displays the data filter settings, which can be modified, if necessary. Whether you are allowed to modify
individual data filter settings or not depends on the system status.

15 Aggregate Index
If the EPC cannot determine which aggregate is valid for the selection you have made, the available 6-character aggregate
models are listed in the "AGGREGATE INDEX". You can choose the desired aggregate by selecting it.

The corresponding SA parts are listed in the illustrated page, possibly together with the serial parts.
17 SA Stroke Index
The SA Stroke Index lists the variants of the special version that can be fitted for the chosen special version (SA).
There are various possibilities here:
. If a data card is stored and the "DATACARD SA FILTERING" and "SA STROKE FILTERING" filters are active, the "SA
Stroke Index" only lists the strokes that are actually fitted in the model.
. If a data card of an older model (only with CODE entries) is stored and "DATACARD SA FILTERING" is active, the
"SA Stroke Index" lists all the strokes that can be derived from the CODE entries and which are valid for this model.
. If no data card is stored or "DATACARD SA FILTERING" and "SA STROKE FILTERING" are deactivated, the index lists
all the strokes that can be fitted for the model.
i In the cars class, SA parts may also be contained in the standard parts range.
The corresponding SA parts are listed in the illustrated page, possibly together with the serial numbers.
3 Ftn. Indicates whether footnotes are available for a particular list entry.

4 For use with This indicates a combined SA package. An SA has been installed in combination with other
SAs. The current construction status has been documented. If parts are qualified during
parts determination, this information assists you in determining the correct part.

19 Illustrated Page
The "illustrated page" screen contains a graphical representation of the parts that are assigned to the selected group/sub-
group or SA.
You can call up the desired parts in the "illustrated page" screen by:
. Selecting the screen item number (sensitive field).
. Entering the screen number(s) in the "Enter Callout" input field (separated by blanks).
1 Illustrated page The illustrated page contains a graphical representation of the parts with screen item num-
bers.
If the cursor is positioned on the illustrated page, you can zoom in (magnifying glass) by
pressing the right mouse button and keeping it depressed.

Repair kits are identified with the icon y.

2 Screen item number For choosing the desired part with the mouse. The screen item number is sensitive.

2 Workstation folder Generally speaking, when you install EPC Flexible Publishing, a folder with the name of the
workstation is created automatically.

3 Folder name After selecting the desired folder, the "SAVE CURRENT LIST" submenu is opened.
i All folders, except for the workstation folder, are protected with a password.
1 NEW After you have entered NEW in the input field and confirmed with R, the "New Folder" sub-
menu is opened.
Copy a list:
Select the "UTIL" action button in the selected parts list.
Select "4. COPY A LIST" in the "LIST UTILITIES" submenu.
Select the source folder of the parts list to be copied in the "Choose Source Folder or Enter" submenu.
Select the selected parts list to be copied in the "Select parts to be copied" submenu.
Assign a new name to the copy of the parts list in the "COPY A LIST" submenu and confirm the entry with R.
In the "Choose Folder or Enter "NEW"" submenu, choose the existing folder or create a new folder to save the parts
list. see Section "21.2.1.2 Save Current List to a New Folder".
Carry out "Password Confirmation", if necessary.
: The parts list has been copied and is stored in the target folder with the new name.
i You can call up the copied parts list via the "3. RECALL A SAVED LIST" function.

Deleting folder:
Select the "UTIL" action button in the parts list.
Select "6. DELETE FOLDER" in the "LIST UTILITIES" submenu.
Select the folder to be deleted in the "DELETE FOLDER" submenu.
Enter the password of the folder to be deleted in the "Password Confirmation" submenu and confirm your entry
with R.
Confirm the "DELETE FOLDER" pop-up menu with "Yes".

22 Add
Depending on the screen in which you are working, you can use the "Add" function to call up one of the following submenus:

Enter Part For entering a complete part number (including the code letter).
Number To Add After confirming the input with R, the "ES-CODE Input" submenu is opened

i The quantity must be greater than "0" with a maximum of 5 characters, (max. 3 integer posi-
tions, one decimal point, and no more than 2 decimal places. When using decimals, make sure
that the settings in the dealer system are taken into account.
23 Displaying Images/Text
To be able to check part numbers in a list using the illustrated page, without having to leave the respective parts information
or selected parts list, you can show or hide the illustrated page that you edited last..

contents not visible on the screen are also printed.

to define the familiar print settings in Windows.
. The footer text for enlarged illustrated pages can be adjusted in the "MBXX Configuration" screen
see Section "26 MBXX Configuration".
25 Exit Menu
If you choose the "AF4 EXIT" (A + 4) function before you save a selected parts list, a confirmation prompt appears
which prevents you from exiting the EPC accidentally without saving the current "SELECTED PARTS LIST" first.
1. Save List Then Exit Saves the "SELECTED PARTS LIST". Opens the "Choose Folder or Enter "NEW"" submenu.

2. Exit Without Saving You exit EPC Flexible Publishing without saving the "SELECTED PARTS LIST".

26 MBXX Configuration
You can use "MBXX Configuration" to make default settings for the workstation.
You can call up "MBXX Configuration" by choosing "Goto/Applications" in the menu bar.
2 Magnify Box Size For setting the zoom function in illustrated pages. You can set the magnify box to three dif-
ferent sizes. see Section "19 Illustrated Page".
3 Print Message For defining default settings for the footer text in printed illustrated pages
see Section "24 Printing".
Printing an illustrated page with footer text:
Display the illustrated page on top using ) or S + 1 or menu bar "Image/Image/
Text" or "Image/Zoom".
Select the icon in the toolbar or choose "File/Print" in the menu bar, or press key
combination S + ).
: This calls up the "Print" submenu.
5 OK Closes the "MBXX Configuration" window, and saves the changed settings.
6 Cancel Closes the "MBXX Configuration" window, without saving the settings.
27 Applications
The "Applications" submenu enables you to access further applications within EPC Flexible Publishing.
Calling up Applications:

. "Goto/Applications" in the menu bar.
Shop Materials Calls up the class index for determining the "Shop Materials" for the cars or trucks di-

Once you enter the system password, the "Workstation Configuration" screen is called

What's New Information Opens "What's New" and provides information about alterations, hints and tips for us-

User Notes Administration Calls up the "Password" submenu for entering the system password m b a g .

After you have entered the system password, the "User Notes Administration" screen
is opened. see Section "27.7 User Notes Administration".

You can only access the "Workstation Configuration" and "User Notes Administration" screens by entering the system pass-
word. The system password is m b a g .
Enter For entering the system password m b a g . For reasons of security, the characters you enter are
SYSTEM Password displayed on the screen with "x". You must confirm the entry with R.
i If you have entered an incorrect system password, the system gives you three further at-
tempts. If you still enter the wrong password, the "Password" submenu is closed.
i The settings displayed in the screen are the recommended default settings.
1. Valid Classes Opens the "Select Market" submenu. see Section "27.3.1 Classes (Select Market)".
The "Valid Classes" submenu is only opened after you have selected the desired market.

2. Reverse Video ON Light screen background.
OFF Dark screen background.
3. Key Ahead ON Activates the data buffer which stores the keyboard entries temporarily before
they are displayed or executed. You can select or enter information without
having to wait for the input field to appear on the screen.
OFF Deactivates the data buffer. You can only select or enter information after the
system has released the entry of further information.
4. Carriage Return Re- ON You have to confirm entries with R.

and executes this as soon as it has recognized a valid input, without requiring

15. Automatic Foot Note ON Opens the "Footnotes" submenu automatically if only one screen item

OFF The "Footnotes" submenu is not opened automatically.
16. Double Spacing ON Selection lists (e.g. group index) are displayed with double spacing.
OFF Selection lists (e.g. group index) are displayed with single spacing.
17. Max Nr. FIN Opens the "FIN History" submenu for defining the maximum number of entries in the
"FIN History". Values from 1 to 40 are allowed.

18. FIN/VIN Search In some markets, you can access EPC using both the FIN and the VIN.
FIN = European Vehicle Ident. Number
VIN = non-European Vehicle Ident. Number (e.g. USA)
EPC Flexible Publishing tries to recognize whether you have entered a FIN or a VIN. If it
recognizes a VIN, it automatically converts it to a FIN and assigns it to the appropriate
data card.
The following settings are possible:
FIN If you exclusively use FIN to access the system.
FIN-VIN If you mainly use FIN to access the system.
VIN-FIN If you mainly use VIN to access the system.
19. Info Text ON If a Production Order text exists for a vehicle in the Unimog, G/M-class cate-
gory, the "Info Text" window is automatically displayed in the "Catalogue Index"
or "Group Index" screens when you access the system using the Vehicle Ident.

OFF The automatic function is deactivated, and the "Info Text" for a vehicle in the
Unimog, G/M-class category can only be called up from the data card.

title as bookmark. This entry can be changed manually if required. You can call up
the bookmarks which have been created at any time by selecting them.
Options Keep What's New Default The default setting is "Not On Top".
On Top
On Top "What's New" is displayed at the front of the screen and can be
closed with "File/Exit".
Not On Top "What's New" can be placed in the background by pressing the left
mouse button outside the window. The window can be fetched to
the front of the screen once again using the key combination
A + T (tab key).
Display History Calls up a submenu which lists the topics previously displayed. You can display the
Window topic you want by double-clicking it.
Font For setting the font size you want (small, normal, large).
Use System Activated The background color of "What's New" is white.
Colors
Deactivated The background color of "What's New" is pale yellow.
Help Version Displays the Copyright information.
Contents Lists the topics in a table of contents. You can display the topic you want by double-
clicking it.
Index Lists the topics in the form of an index. You can display the index entry you want
by entering a term.
Back Goes back through the topics displayed to date.
Print Calls up the "Print" submenu for printing the displayed text.
