General information on hybrid Iub

Overview
The hybrid Iub configuration allows a part of the user traffic to be exchanged on the Iub
interface over an IP transport layer.
Hybrid Iub means support of hybrid ATM and IP transport mode on Iub interface.

System description
Hybrid Iub interface supports the following configurations:
Standard hybrid Iub configurations: In the pre-UA8.1 scenario, ATM was used for
all signaling traffic (NBAP, ALCAP, NodeB OAM) and for R99 user plane (UPlane)
traffic. ATM also carried HSDPA streaming and SRB for HSxPA. IP was used only for
HSDPA and HSUPA UPlane interactive and background (I&B) traffic. OAM
communication remained unchanged as it remained on the ATM backbone. This
support is continued in UA8.1.
Evolved hybrid Iub configurations: UA8.1 introduces the Flexible Operator
Configurable Split IP Iub feature to support more IP flow possibilities. With this
enhancement IP can carry OMC-B/OAM communication, PS R99 traffic, HSDPA
streaming, and HSDPA and HSUPA UPlane I&B traffic. ATM is used for all the
signaling traffic (NBAP, ALCAP) and CS R99 UPlane traffic.
Figure 2-1, Before and after activation (p. 2-3) illustrates the condition, before and after
activation.

Figure 2-1 Before and after activation

Note: IP is used only for HSDPA and HSUPA UPlane I&B traffic. Monitoring of IP
traffic on the RNC is limited.

UMTS Proprietary Heartbeat

There is a system requirement to detect the failure of an IP link. To achieve this, the RNC
sends a proprietary layer 3 heartbeat UDP message to the NodeB. The RNC starts the
UMTS proprietary heartbeat after reception of the first NodeB attach message from the
NodeB. Configuration of the UDP port used for the proprietary heartbeat is required with
the same value on the RNC as the NodeB. This port is used as source and destination on
both the sides.

IP resiliency: Protected Default Routes (PDRs)
PDR is defined as an IP static default route (identified by the destination address 0.0.0.0)
with two or more (up to four) outbound IP interfaces (next hops). The set of next hops
protects IP flows with static routing during the route convergence caused by port failures,
card failures and software migration.
Each next hop uses a unique IP subnet. At a given time, only one port or interface is
selected as the active forwarding port or interface for a specific IP flow.
In UA8.1 the following two mechanisms are applicable:
ICMP ping mechanism
Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) mechanism
Note: ECMP is not supported on the 4pGe card.

The Protocol Ports for IP routes on the RNC

At least three protocol ports must be added to the Virtual Router (VR) for hybrid Iub
support.
Figure 2-2, IP routes and associated ports (p. 2-4) illustrates the IP routes and
associated ports.

Figure 2-2 IP routes and associated ports

Note: Additional protocol ports on the 4pGe cards can be defined for redundancy and
load balancing.

Note: The three protocol ports are added to the following:
A new VR in the case of segmented model, or
The VR previously used for IuPS UP in the consolidated model. For more
information, see Adding the virtual router (p. 4-8).

Bidirectional Forwarding Detection mechanism

This feature introduces the standard BFD mechanism in the 9370 RNC. The BFD
mechanism allows faster fault detection in case of adjacent router failure or a failure of a
Layer 2 switch and / or a link failure between the RNC and the adjacent router.
The RNC implementation of BFD supports BFD sessions on IP or VLAN configurations
over 4pGe Ethernet interfaces only.
Figure 2-3, BFD (p. 2-6) illustrates the BFD mechanism.

Note:
Both BFD and ICMP are valid mechanisms to detect layer 3 fault in adjacent
node, but only one of the two mechanisms can be activated under a specific VR.
RNC implementation of BFD applies only to the static default route and does not
support BFD on other routing protocols.
Up to 48 BFD sessions are supported per RNC shelf.
BFD sessions on IP or VLAN configurations are supported over 4pGe Ethernet
interfaces only.

Note:
[1] Detection and recovery times for Port, Link and Card failures under BFD are
identical to ICMP; the detection for these types of failure is common for BFD and
ICMP Heartbeat under the PDR framework.
[2] The 300 ms detection time assumes a Negotiated Rx Interval of 100 ms and a
remote multiplier of 3.

Flexible Operator Configurable Split IP Iub

The flexible operator configurable split IP Iub feature introduces additional IP Iub
configurations or topologies for traffic separation at layer 1 and 2. The feature allows you
to use split Iub when IP is used as a transport media. This split traffic can be mapped in
the network to different VLANs or to different physical ports on a NodeB. RNC considers
the split traffic as virtual interfaces. The split criteria can be defined either by traffic type
or by the UTRAN operator.
To split by traffic type, the traffic type must be mapped to different virtual interfaces. For
the operator-based split, you need to configure Bandwidth pool. If dedicated transport
resources are created on the Iub, the resources must be grouped in the same Bandwidth
pool. While multiple traffic flows with same Qos can be supported within the same
Bandwidth pool, each traffic flow must be mapped to different virtual interface in the
network.
Note: Split IP Iub is supported for iBTS configurations only.
Figure 2-4, Separation of UPlane traffic on hybrid with VLANs (p. 2-7) illustrates
an example where IP UPlane traffic is mapped into separate VLANs by DSCP.

LAG Support on 9370 RNC

In UA8.1, an intra-card Link Aggregation (LAG) support on the 4pGigEth cards is
introduced. to increase the peak throughput on the interfaces beyond one Gbps and to
provide an additional level of link resiliency.
This feature is introduced for the following benefits:
Increased bandwidth: Bandwidth is increased by including additional links under the
link group.
Link protection: Ensures link protection by diverting traffic to the remaining links
when one link in the link group fails.
Fault Transparency to upper layer protocols: Upper layers carried transparently over
LAG group.
Multiple configuration possibilities: Any combination of 4 links on 4pGigE card can
be selected to take part in a link group.
For more details on LAG support, see Alcatel-Lucent 9952 Wireless Provisioning System
- User Guide, NN-20500-036.

Example PDR
Hardware prerequisites
A Protected Default Route (PDR) is defined as an IP static default route (identified by the
destination address 0.0.0.0) with two or more (up to four) outbound IP interfaces (next
hops).
The set of next hops protects IP flows with static routing during the route convergence
caused by port failures, card failures and software migration. Each next hop uses a unique
IP subnet.
At any time, only one port or interface is selected as the active forwarding port or
interface for a specific IP flow.
ICMP ping mechanism: If this method is selected, an ICMP ping is sent every second
to each of the nextHops defined under the default static route. If a ping receives no
reply within four seconds, the Inode disables that static route nextHop.
BFD mechanism: If this method is selected, path failure is detected when the local
system stops receiving BFD packets for a predetermined time interval.

Example
In this example, only one of the nextHops is unlocked, enabled, and active. The other
three nextHops are idle.

Is the configuration correct?
1. Does the NodeB have an IpRan object? If no, then the BTS cannot run any call over
IP.
2. Is the xCCM or eCCM card inserted? If no, then the NodeB cannot run any call over
IP. Hybrid Iub is only supported on xCCM or eCCM cards.
3. Is the RNC, NodeB nodebCapability set to 1? If the NodeB nodebCapability is set to
0, then all calls will go over ATM. If the NodeB nodebCapability is set to 1, the RNC
will attempt to use IP if it is configured properly. This is a good method to disable
hybrid Iub on the NodeB without removing the BTSEquipment IpRan object or
locking any IP interface is to set the NodeB nodebCapability to zero.
4. Are the 4pGe cards configured? And are the appropriate VR Protocol Ports
configured?
5. Are the static routes configured? Remember that the Inode does not do any dynamic
IP routing for Hybrid Iub. Everything is statically defined. Ensure the default static
route is configured and pointing to the adjacent router.

Has the call been granted an R99 PS RAB instead of an HSPA RAB?
1. Has it been Always On downsized?
2. Has IRM or cell color set the HSPA call to R99?
3. Has the call established on a cell that has HSPA deactivated?
4. Is the mobile capable of HSPA services?
5. Has HSPA services been deactivated on the BTS Cell, the NodeB or RNC?

Can the NodeB ping the adjacent router?

If no, then check where the BTS Ethernet port is connected and investigate the Ethernet
or IP cloud configuration or cabling.

Can the INode ping the adjacent router?

If no, then check where the Ge link is connected and investigate the Ethernet or IP cloud
configuration or cabling.

Is NBAP functioning correctly?

If the call is not setting up over IP, there can be an NBAP or ALCAP reason.
Note: It is important to remember that the RNC decides to place the call over IP or
ATM.

Possibility to lock the IP interface on Hybrid Iub

Overview
This feature allows locking of hybrid Iub IP BPs on the RNC. All the in-progress calls
assigned to the locked BP are released and the new incoming calls are assigned by call
admission control (CAC) to other available transport resources configured to carry the
same type of calls; for example, another available IP or ATM BP.
The locked BP is out of service and you can then perform maintenance operations on the
transmission network associated with the locked BP without affecting user traffic.
The unlock option brings the BP back into service so that new calls can again be assigned
to it by CAC.
Locking the IP interface on Hybrid Iub is used to simulate BP failure. This feature helps
to understand the impact of BP failure on in-progress calls, new incoming calls, and call
switching (ATM BP or other IP BP).
Note: Locking and unlocking of IP BwPool does not impact the continuity check.
For detailed procedural information on how to lock and unlock IP BP, see Locking
the IP interface on Hybrid Iub (p. 6-4).
