1. The spring below has a spring constant of 20. N/m. The s between the box and the surface is 0.40.

a. The box is pushed to the right, then released. Draw a free body diagram for the box above when the spring is
stretched, yet the box is stationary.

b. What is the maximum distance that the spring can be stretched from equilibrium before the box begins to slide
back, if the force given by the spring is F = -kx, where x is the stretching and k is the spring constant?

c. How much energy is stored in the spring at this maximum stretching distance?

2. You accelerate from 0-28 m/s in 6 seconds (about 0-60 mi/hr) in your 1300 kg car. How much kinetic
energy is in the car. What is the force on the car.

3. A 6.8-kg toboggan is moving on a ROUGH frozen pond with a speed of 1.9 m/s. The coefficient of friction
between the pond and the toboggan is 0.13. Determine the distance which the toboggan slides before coming to
rest.

4. Matthew starts from rest on top of 8.45 m high sledding hill. He slides down the SLICK FRICTIONLESS slide and
onto the flat surface at the bottom. On the lower flat part, the coefficient of friction between the sled and snow
is 0.128. Matthew and the sled have a combined mass of 27.5 kg. Determine the distance which Matthew will
slide along the level surface before coming to a complete stop. (HINT: This is a 2 part problem. Consider the slide
separate from the flat part.)

6. A 200. kg box is pulled at constant speed by the little engine pictured below. The box moves a distance of 2.5
m across a horizontal surface. How hard is the engine pulling?

7. An elevator moves down at an acceleration of 2 m/s2. A person standing on a scale has a weight that reads 160
N. What is their real weight? What is their mass?

8. A 70.0 kg box is pulled across a surface ( = 0.2) by a 300. N force at an angle of 30. to the horizontal. What
is the acceleration of the box?

If the box starts from rest, how long will it take to travel 10 meters?

What is its kinetic energy at the end of those 10 meters?

9. A truck hits a fly. Which experiences the bigger force, and why?

10. A box slides on a surface with absolutely no force on it EXCEPT friction. Describe its motion.
