Overview: DD2200 and DD2500 System DIMMs

The system DIMMs are not hot swappable. A system contains up to 8 memory DIMMs:
l DD2500 base configuration systems contain 4 x 8 GB DIMMs.
l DD2500 expanded configuration systems contain 8 x 8 GB DIMMs.
l DD2200 base configuration systems contain 2 x 4 GB DIMMs.
l DD2200 expanded configuration systems contain 4 x 4 GB DIMMs.
The label on top of the SP module provides the DIMM location information.

Remove and Install a DIMM

Note

l Only trained and qualified personnel should be allowed to install or replace this
equipment.
l During the procedure, wear a grounding wrist strap to avoid ESD damage to the
equipment.
l Replacement or addition of a DIMM requires removal of the SP module. Never
attempt service while the SP module is still in the chassis.
l For replacement or upgrade DIMMs, use only DIMMs from a Data Domain memory
spares kit.

Shut Down and Disconnect the System

Procedure
1. Stop the system by entering the system poweroff command to allow the
proper shut down of the file system and other system components.
For help connecting to a system using a laptop computer and terminal emulator,
see the document FE Toolkit Inventory and Common Procedures for FRU Tasks at
https://support.emc.com.
2. The system displays: Are you sure? [yes | no]. Enter yes or no (y or
n).
3. Disconnect the AC power cord wire clips and then disconnect the cords from
the rear of the system.

CAUTION

Power may remain active for up to three minutes after removing the power
cords. A DD2200 system may continue to run on battery for three minutes
or more after AC power has been removed. Wait until all of the LEDs are
dark, indicating the power is fully off, before servicing components.

4. Disconnect all cables from the cable management arm (CMA, DD2500 system
only) and from the rear of the system.

Note

Document or mark the location of each cable for re-installation.

5. Remove the CMA (DD2500 system only).

a. On the CMA, pull each blue plunger button inward to unlock the plungers
and unlock the CMA from the rear part of the rails.

Figure 2 Unlocked blue plunger buttons on the CMA

b. Pull the CMA outward and away from the rear of the system.

Remove the SP Module

CAUTION

The SP module is heavy. Use two people or a mechanical lift to move the module.

Procedure
1. From the rear of the chassis, squeeze the left and right blue SP latch handles to
release the latches. Then pull down on the latches.
Figure 3 Blue SP latch handle

2. Still holding onto the open SP latches, pull the SP module partly away from the
chassis.

Remove the SP Module 5

CAUTION

Do not attempt to pull the SP module from the chassis using an orange-
colored I/O module handle.

3. Grasp the sides of the unit to pull out and fully remove the module from the
chassis.
4. Place the SP module onto an appropriate work surface. The top view of the SP
module is shown in the photo (the rear of the system is to the left in the photo).

Remove the Air Duct(s)

Procedure
1. Grasp the front and rear of the airduct as shown in the next two photos. Both
models contain this airduct.

2. Pull up on the airduct to remove it.

3.
Note

The second airduct is found only in the DD2500 system.

Grasp the second airduct by the shallow indentations as shown in the next
photo.

4. Pull up on the airduct to remove it.

Replace a Failed DIMM or Perform an Upgrade

To replace a failed DIMM, locate the DIMM and replace according to the steps given in
the procedure to Remove the SP Module on page 5.

Replace a Failed DIMM or Perform an Upgrade 7

Field Replacement Guide

Note

To verify the proper slots, see Remove the SP Module on page 5.

Figure 8 Location of DIMM in the SP module (DD2500 system shown)

Perform an Upgrade
The bottom of the photo is the front of the system. The left group of 4 DIMM slots
from left to right are labeled CHAD0, CHAD1, CHBD0, and CHBD1. The right group of
4 DIMM slots are labeled CHDD1, CHDD0, CHCD1, and CHCD0.
If you are performing a memory upgrade:
l A DD2500 system contains either 4 x 8 GB or 8 x 8 GB memory DIMMs. The base
system DIMMs are located in slots labeled CHAD0, CHBD0, CHCD0 and CHDD0.
An expanded system contains a DIMM in each of the 8 slots.
l A DD2200 system contains either 2 x 4 GB or 4 x 4 GB memory DIMMs. The base
system DIMMs are located in slots labeled CHAD0 and CHBD0. An expanded
system contains a DIMM in slots labeled CHAD0, CHBD0, CHCD0 and CHDD0.
The following two figures show the DD2200 System before and after the memory
upgrade.

2. While holding the latches down, grasp the DIMM by its edges and pull the
module slowly upward.

Note

Hold DIMMs only by the edges. Do not touch the components.

3. Install a DIMM by pushing it into place until the two latches are secured.

Note

l DIMMs are keyed and can only be installed in one direction.

l Verify that the DIMM latches are fully engaged and in the locked position.
l During installation, apply pressure evenly on both corners of the DIMM.
Avoid pressing the DIMM at the center.

Install the Airducts

Procedure
1. Press the second airduct into place (DD2500 system only).
2. Press the front and rear of the airducts into place.

Install the SP Module Into the Chassis

Procedure
1. Make sure the latch handles are in the fully down position.
2. Slide the SP module into the chassis, making sure it has been fully pushed in.

Install the Airducts 11

Field Replacement Guide

Note

You may need two people to complete this step.

3. To secure the SP module, pull up on the two side latches until they click into the
chassis and are firmly locked into place.

Restart the System

Procedure
1. Reconnect all peripheral devices, the AC power cords and the wire clips.

Note

The system powers on automatically when AC power is restored.

2. On the DD2500 system, install the cable management arm and organize the rear
cables.

Verify the DIMM Replacement

Boot-up options do not include a complete memory check; however, the following
steps do a partial check by accessing selected addresses in the new DIMMs.
