Aircraftturbinesaresubjecttoingestedforeignobjectdamage(FOD),Corrosion,erosion,thermaldeterioration,
cracking,anddistortion.Sincethepartsthataremostvulnerabletodamagearenotreadilyavailabletounaided
visualinspection,theonlyavailablemethodtodeterminetheconditionofaturbineistheuseofavideoscope,
borescopeorfiberscope.

BorescopeinspectionofanengineinternallyonthewingforsignsofFOD,wear,thermaland
mechanicaldamageisacommonpractice.Turbineborescopeinspectionshelpmaintainthereliability
oftheaircraftgasturbine.Thismeanscommercial,militaryandbusinessaviationgreatersafetyand
moretimethatanenginecanoperateonwingwithoutcostlyandtimeconsumingteardownand
unnecessarymaintenance.TodaymanyaircraftturbineborescopeinspectionsaremandatedbytheFAAand
manufacturers.

Areasofborescopeinspection:

Compressor.Accessforaborescopeistypicallythroughtheairinlet,ableedportorspeciallydesigned
borescopeport.Thelaststagescanoftenbeaccessedthroughanignitorport.Leadingandtrailingedgesof
compressorbladesandguidevanesarecheckedforforeignobjectdamage(FOD)anderosion.

CombustionChamber.Burnercansarecheckedforcracks,andmisalignment.Fuelnozzlesandotherparts,
includinglouversarecheckedforexcessivecoking,crackinganddistortion.Accessistypicallythroughand
ignitorport.

TurbineSection.Thehighestheatlevelsareinthefirststageturbine.Hereboththestationarynozzlesand
guidevanesaresubjecttoburningandcracking,FOD,pitting,erosionandsulfidation.Secondstagebladescan
besubjecttoshiftingandrivetcracking.Accessistypicallythroughandignitorportorspecificallydesign
