1. The following data applies to a generator in a thermal power plant:
Power rating P = 150 MW, cos = 0.85, nominal voltage = 15 kV,
nominal mechanical speed = 1500 rpm and moment of inertia J =
75 103 kgm2 . Calculate the stored kinetic energy in the generator at
nominal speed and the inertia constant H.

(a) What is the value of the emf (Eq ) behind the transient reactance?
(b) Calculate the maximum electrical power that can be transmitted
if
i. the system is according to the figure.
ii. one of the lines has a three-phase earth fault in the middle
of the line.
(c) What is the acceleration of the generator rotor right after the
fault in (b.ii) has occurred?
(d) What is the value of the rotor angle if the acceleration is main-
tained at the (constant) value calculated in (c) for 0.05 s?
(e) What will the value of the acceleration be if the rotor angle is
equal to the value calculated in (d)? Discuss the difference be-
tween the values obtained in (c) and (e)!

4. A 50 Hz generator with four poles, rating 100 MVA (11 kV), has an
inertia constant of 8.0 s. What is the angular acceleration of the rotor
if the mechanical power input increases in a step to 80 MW from a
steady state value of 50 MW, i.e. the electrical load? What are the
changes in rotor angle and rotor speed if this acceleration is maintained
for 10 cycles?

6. Calculate the critical fault clearing angle for the system given below
for a solid three-phase fault in the point P. The pre-fault loading of
