1. For finished events in the past with no connection to the present:

The Romans subjugated many territories with their great army.

Huscar and Atahualpa fought each other for the throne of the Inca Empire.
2. With a finshed time word:
I went to the cinema yesterday.
Charles and Peter bet their motorbikes on a card game last week.
Roberts wife visited Japan in 2010.
I bought a new flat and a fancy cruise ship five days ago.
3. For habitual or repeated actions that took place in the past:
I went to the theatre four times last week.
We argued over a girl twice last month.
Mr Robbinson lent me some money several times when I was poor.
They withdrew much money from this cashpoint many times last summer.
I discussed this issue with him more than once one day before his birthday.
4. For things that happened one after the other:
I went to a caf, sat down and ordered something to eat.
Yesterday, I went to a library, read a cooking book, got some copies and then left.
Sarah got up early, had a quick shower, ate a light breakfast and went to work by taxi.
Susans sister came to my house, talked to me for a while, made me a job offer and then left
quickly.
Roberts parents went to the market, did the shopping, returned home and cooked a delicious
