Introduction

England
July, 1688

A cold breeze drifted in a stereotype looking noblemans large window.

He woke up on his bed and realized that he still had some time before his
appointment. He laid down on his bed and thought of something he have been
lingering over.

I wonder how long had it been since I last saw her. he mumbled to
himself on his big and soft white pillow. The thoughts of his beloved flooded
his mind. He had always believed himself to be a cold, apathetic man. Well, he
knew he was wrong right away the moment he saw her. He sighed. It was only
a few days. Silly me. I ended up missing her again.

After his thoughts, he prepared himself for a meeting he had today.

I hope Im not too early.

He walked out from his house area by using the usual pathway he always
used. He had some thoughts along the way, and instead of being about his love,
its about whats happening in the country.

---

Hey! Macaroni! A loud, jovial sound came afar. Before Macaroni

even knew it, the owner of the joyful sound was right before her eyes.

Oh, Rosa. How many times do I have to tell you that my name is
Macaronna, not Macaroni? Macaronna said with a gruff voice, but anyone
could see how hard she was trying not to smile. Im starting to hate my name
because of you.

1
Oh, please, just be happy that your name is not Anna Conda. Rosa said
before she bursted out laughing. Anyway, want some help?

Macaronna looked at a basket of bread in her own arms. No need

Macaronna was an attractive lady. With her long brunette hair, dreamy
hazel eyes, fair and silky skin, feminine body, and perfect facial features, she
was easily considered to be one of the prettiest merchants around here. In fact, it
was hard to tell she was a mere merchant. She looked like a princess with her
stunning looks and it was not a surprise that guys always fell heads over heels
for her.

It was unfortunate for such a gorgeous and nice girl like her to be born
into a poor family, but Macaronna was never mad at the world. She was never
mad at God. All she wished for was freedom but with everything happening
right now with the Catholic king, her wish wouldnt come true anytime soon.

Its weird seeing a pretty girl like you walking around, selling
homemade bread desperately. Rosa joked while giving her a few coins.

Oh, Rosa, Im not desperate. The brunette handed a piece of bread over
to her friend. If Im ever desperate for anything, its for a Protestant King.

2
Dbut

You are late, Lord Farmwelle.

The British nobleman sighed in response and took a seat. The tavern was
unusually busy and full of people, and the workers were running anywhere.
My apologies. I didnt expect myself to be late. I thought I would be too early
so I strolled around the city for a while, and I ended up being late.

Please dont apologize. Im just a knight. The knight said softly.

I think of you as a friend. Farmwelle replied with a gentle smile on his

face. Did you order anything?

Yes, I ordered for you too. Its my treat. The finest beer in town, your
favourite.

Arent you the charmer? He was the charmer. Fread was a

good-looking knight with the best personality you could ever imagine.
Farmwelle had known the guy ever since they were little kids. Their social
positions didnt separate them apart, not like they could anyway.

You flatter me. Fread chuckled. So, how is it going?

You have come all the way from Netherlands. I think we should talk
about you first. What happened? The nobles voice became serious and there
was a glint of concern in his eyes.

Right. The knight said uncomfortably. Well, Im sure you are updated
with the situation right now.

Farmwelle nodded.

3
Ever since King James II succeeded to the throne in 1685, everything had
been chaotic. Britain had started to develop Protestant ideas since 1534 and
right now, in the 17th century, most citizens dont really want a Catholic king.

Before King James II succeeded to the throne, there were two parties
which were Whigs and Tories. The Whigs opposed James II when the Tories
supported him. People started to favor James II and the Tories because the
Whigs were found guilty of trying to assassinate him. Moreover, James II
promised that he would respect rights and protect the existing Protestant
establishment.

The king broke the promise.

The king was suspending and violating laws such as the Test Act by
creating a government with only Catholics. He was openly trying to build a
coalition that would advance Catholic emancipation.

People of Britain tried to ignore it, because he didnt have any Catholic
heirs, and he had a Protestant daughter Mary who was married to a Protestant
Prince William III. They thought this was only going to be temporary.

Of course, the worst thing happened. The kings wife recently gave birth
to a Catholic son.

Well, while I was in Netherlands, Prince William received a letter-

Fread was about to continue his sentence, but he was interrupted by a waitress.

Here is your order. The waitress said, placing two glasses of beer on
the table.

Thank you. Fread and Farmwelle said in unison.

When the waitress walked away, Farmwelle grabbed the glass and took a
sip. Continue.

4
He received a letter telling him to come to England with an army.

Farmwelle almost spit out his drink in shock when the knight finished his
sentence. He shouted. What?

Fread said quietly, as if he was scared that others would hear. He was
offered to take over as the king.

Farmwelle was too shocked to remain his composure. He didnt know

how to feel. He never supported His Majesty and he would be glad to see
Britain Protestant again. Still, the thought of revolutions and wars made his
heart beat faster.

He felt scared.

After regaining his composure, Farmwelle asked, Why now?

I think its because of the birth of the Catholic son. Fread replied. The
people who sent the letter were probably scared that the monarchy would
continue to be Catholic.

Who sent the letter? The Whigs?

The Earl of Danby, The Earl of Shrewsbury, The Earl of Devonshire,

The Viscount Lumley, Henry Compton, Edward Russell, and Henry Sydney.

The Earl of Danby and Henry Compton? I know them. Arent they
Tories?

Tories stopped supporting His Majesty.

Okay. Farmwelle didnt know what to say next.

This is a secret though. I pledged Her Royal Highness to come back to

tell you.

5
Her Royal Highness must really trust you.

Fread was one of Marys personal knights. His family served the royalty.
However, Farmwelle could see the bond between them. They were like friends.

What His Majesty has been doing is indeed bad, but I dont want wars. I
dont want deaths. The knight said while sipping his beer.

I couldnt agree more.

There was silence for a while.

Why did British people even become Anti-Catholicism? Fread asked

curiously.

Have you read Martin Luthers work? 95 Theses?

No, but my parents taught me about his views when I was four years old.
I think I know a few things. Fread answered. They said his views gave birth to
rationalism. They said it freed them from the tyranny of the Catholic church.

Yes. Farmwelle nodded. What Martin Luther did leads to this. The
present.

Hmm. Fread muttered in response. I just think its funny, and maybe
amazing, that a piece of writing could start some kind of reformation.

You should read it. Its pretty convincing. It would probably make you
become a Protestant right away. The nobleman joked.

Fread laughed. Im already a Protestant, My Lord.

---

6
Macaronna was surprised to see her lover. She certainly didnt expect his
presence when she walked in her bedroom.

How did you get in? Curiosity crept into her sweet voice.

You forgot to lock the doors again. Farmwelle complained.

Oops.

I missed you.

I missed you too.

Farmwelle and Macaronna had a relaxing conversation. Macaronna told

him about her work today and how Rosa tripped over herself in front of her
handsome crush today. Farmwelle was listening and admiring her beauty
quietly.

Whats wrong? Macaronna asked suddenly.

What?

I said, Whats wrong?

Nothing.

Everything was wrong in Farmwelles mind. His thoughts were occupied

with his conversation with Fread today. He couldnt stop thinking about
Catholics and Protestants.

We have been together for almost two years. Do you really think you
can fool me? Macaronna said. She seemed to be amused.

7
Farmwelle was reluctant to tell her about the conversation he had today.
He promised Fread to keep this a top secret. After all, Fread came all the way
from Netherlands to tell him. Well, Fread also came to visit his family and
friends, but still. It felt wrong to tell her.

So he just asked.

What if a revolt were to happen?

Hmm. She raised her eyebrow in confusion. Why are you asking?

Just wondering. Just thinking. You know His Majesty has Catholic heir
now.

Macaronna was quiet. It looked like she was gathering her thoughts, and
Farmwelle admired her beauty again. It was a routine for him. He was never
able to keep his eyes off her. Everytime he saw her, Sonnet 17 by his favourite
playwright, William Shakespeare, popped up in his head.

If I could write the beauty of your eyes,

And in fresh numbers number all your graces,
The age to come would say This poet lies;
Such heavenly touches ne'er touched earthly faces.

He couldnt care less that she was a poor merchant. He knew he loved her
the first time he saw her. She was an angel sent from heaven.

Stop staring at me. Its creepy. His gorgeous merchant ruined the
moment, but maybe he really was being creepy.

Sorry.

To be honest, I would love for a revolt to happen.

Why?

8
Im against the Catholic Church and everyone knows our king is
extremely Catholic.

Youre too simple. Farmwelle frowned. How about deaths and

violence that may happen?

Think about all the false things in the Catholic Church. Macaronna
frowned too. Martin Luther wrote, and I quote, why does not the pope, whose
wealth is today greater than the wealth of the richest Crassus, build this one
basilica of St. Peter with his own money rather than with the money of poor
believers?

I know you are a fan of Martin Luther and I understand what you mean.
Im a Protestant too, darling. Farmwelle stated. But, do you really want
wars?

Well, how about a nonviolent revolt?

Revolt means to take violent actions though. The nobleman protested.

Anyway, revolts would go against Thomas Hobbess idea. Wouldnt it?

Why are you even talking about Hobbes? You know I could careless
about him. His pessimistic ideas were nonsense. Hobbesianism was nonsense. I
dont even know why I read Leviathan. Macaronna chuckled. We are the
people of the country. We have all the rights to revolt, dont we? I really cant
bring myself to believe him.

If Hobbes was still alive, he would freak out if he knew this.

He would. Macaronna laughed before glaring at him. Why are you

asking about all of this anyway?

9
I told you. Im just wondering. Farmwelle said nervously. She knew
him too much and she definitely knew he was hiding something from her. You
know, theres a Catholic heir now, so Im sure something may happen soon, and
Im scared of it.

Macaronna was quiet again, and Farmwelle admired her beauty again.

Believe in God. God is good. Every event has a reason behind it. If
something were to happen, it would be for a greater good. She finally said.

Netherlands
July, 1688

He read the letter over and over again. He had received the formal letter
since June, but he just couldnt decide. Although he was Marys husband, he
was a foreigner. Would the English people react well to his invasion? Moreover,
agreeing to the invitation may mean the beginning of incoming wars and deaths.
There is also this thing about Mary.

Why are you still reading that? Its time to sleep, William.

William turned around to see his wife yawning on the bed. Did I wake
you up?

Did you make any noise?

No.

Then you didnt wake me up. Mary said. Seriously, stop reading that
letter.

William sighed and walked to sit behind her on the bed, bringing the
letter with him. I dont want to go.

10
Go where?

To England.

Why?

There are lots of reasons. William pondered. Also, Im jealous of your

position. Even if I were to go, you would end up getting all the power. You are
Jamess daughter.

Dont worry. Mary chuckled. I would be no more but your wife and I
would do all that lay in my power to make you King for life.

Thank you. William said softly. How would you feel if I dethrone him
though? He is your father.

I would feel sad. Mary told the truth. Although she wasnt on good
terms with her father and he forced her to marry William, he was still her father.
But in the end, its your decision to make. They invited you.

Its my decision to make. He mumbled.

After that night, William had lots of discussions with his people. He
finally decided to agree to the invitation and preparation for the invasion began.

---

England
September, 1688

Do you know that Prince William III is going to invade our country?

What? Macaronnas eyes couldnt be any wider. Is that some kind of

nonsense rumor you are trying to spread, Rosa?

11
No! Rosa shouted. Its true. He has been planning on invading for a
while now, but it has only become public knowledge this month.

Macaronna almost dropped her precious basket of bread. She had been
way too caught up with selling bread because her second anniversary with
Farmwelle was coming soon in a few months and she needed money to afford a
nice gift for him. Still, she couldnt believe she missed this important
information.

A high-pitched jovial voice snapped her out of her thought. Why are you
this shocked? Hold your basket properly. You are going to drop it.

Macaronna grabbed her basket tightly. Why?

Why what? Rosa knitted her brows.

Why is he invading?

From what I know, he plans to dethrone the king. I dont think there will
be wars though. I mean, tons of people oppose His Majesty. Wont people
support the prince? Rosa expressed her opinion. Macaronna was about to say
something, but a little boy with crooked teeth passed by and bought Rosas
flower. Rosa smiled at him. Thank you.

The boy smiled back and walked away.

I wish he bought my bread too. Macaronna said sadly.

You know that your beloved Farmwelle would be okay with just a small
gift, right?

I know, but I want to give him something nice. On our first anniversary,
he gave me this gorgeous ring, She showed Rosa the ring she was wearing,
and I gave him a lame doll I sewed.

12
Rosa didnt say anything back. She knew her friend was a stubborn
person and she would never be able to convince her to think otherwise. Still,
Farmwelle really would be okay with a cheap gift. He would love anything from
Macaronna.

They were selling their stuff for a while. After a cute little girl who
bought both of Rosas flower and Macaronnas bread walked away, Rosa spoke.

Arent you happy about the invasion? We are probably going to have a
Protestant king again.

I am happy. Macaronna replied truthfully. If King James II was an

extreme Catholic, she was an extreme Protestant. It just feels unreal right
now.

I know right. Rosa agreed.

---

The king was sitting on the balcony, watching the beautiful scenery. A
soft breeze swept over him and it felt nice. It helped him soothe his mind. James
had been contemplating a lot of things. The fact that his daughters husband was
planning to overthrow him left him in shock. This wasnt what he had in mind
when he agreed to the marriage. Maybe this was some kind of karma. He forced
his daughter to marry William after all.

Despite the worries, James still believed in himself. Louis, his cousin and
the king of France, offered him support. He rejected it.

James was aware of his uprising unpopularity, but he was sure he still had
some people who supported him. His army would be enough to fight back
William, wouldnt it?

He sighed and continued to enjoy the stunning scenery. Before he knew

it, the sun was gone.

13
Finale

England
November, 1688

Today was the Guy Fawkes Night. It was the day of celebration, the day
of Protestants, and the day Prince William III landed at England with his
massive army consisting of 250 carrier ships, 60 fishing boats carried 35,000
men, 11,000-foot and 4,000 horse soldiers.

His army landed far away from Jamess army. It was on purpose.

William was sure he wouldnt need to do much. He expected Jamess

position to collapse soon by itself but if something unexpected happened, he
would be ready with his army.

And instead of chaotic, everyone greeted his army with support.

---

John Churchill, Jamess most loyal commander, ran in the castle.

Your Majesty, Prince Williams army has arrived.

Jamess muscle tensed up. The moment had arrived. He couldnt

remember how many sleepless nights he had, spending time worrying. He was
sure of his army. He had more people. He was greater at battles. He could do
this, couldnt he?

He was nervous. He noticed that his own hands were shaking as if the
temperature had dropped to absolute zero for a second. He never had his heart
beating this fast before. His appearance looked pale. He thought he might even
die on his throne tonight.

14
I dont think they are going to attack first. They seem to be on defense.
Churchill said.

He thought a lot. These past months, he became even more aware of his
unpopularity. He heard people in the castle bad-mouthing him all the time and
some of them even said they would leave him to be on Williams side when
William arrived. It would be an unbelievable lie if he said he didnt feel sad. He
was only human after all.

Tell me, Churchill. James said apathetically. People are taking that
Protestants side, arent they?

There was a moment of silence before the commander replied

uncomfortably. Yes, Your Majesty.

Churchills answer made James felt painful. It was like a stab to the heart
but truths were better than lies.

Many English officers had already deserted James. Most of them were
Protestants. Churchill could also see that His Majestys army had no will to
fight. Nevertheless, the commander believed his king could win this if he tried.
Jamess army was superior to Williams army numerically after all.

The king looked at him. His eyes were full of sorrow. Will you leave me
too? He asked with a sad voice.

Churchill was taken aback by the question. He had been with the king for
so long. Although he disagreed with a lot of the kings actions, he had been
nothing but loyal. Hesitation wasnt supposed to be his feeling right now, but he
hesitated anyway.

I wont leave you, Sir.

He lied to the king.

15
I shall do nothing for now. James decided. Let me think this through.

Churchill hated what James was saying. Nothing wasnt what James
should be doing. If this continued without the king taking any action, the king
would lose all the support. More and more people would be joining Williams
side. In a blink of an eye, William would win without any battles.

Right after Churchill went out of his room, his hidden downhearted face
revealed. James stared at the usual scenery he had been always watched but the
scenery he was looking at right now was different from what he used to see. It
looked depressing. The sky was darker than it had ever been. The leaves on
those trees were blown furiously by the wind. It looked like they were going to
leave him and he knew they would leave just like others. He could feel nothing
but loneliness.

---

A few days passed and James finally had the nerve to take some actions
but everything was sloppy. Everyone could see James was losing his mind and
James could see everyone was being unloyal. His troops didnt have any
passion. They didnt want to fight for him anymore. Many of his officers had
deserted him. Even Lord Cornbury, one of his great commanders, had deserted
him with his men.

Two days later, Lord Churchill also left with his men. The only trace left
behind was the letter of apology. James read it with tears in his eyes.

I hope the great advantage I enjoy under Your Majesty, which I own I
would never expect in any other change of government, may reasonably
convince Your Majesty and the world that I am actuated by a higher principle.

- Churchill

He didnt think he could become more devastated, but two days later, his
younger daughter, Anne, also left and joined Williams side.

16
Now, there was only himself there and no one cared about him anymore.
Everyone important in his life had left him. Even my most loyal servant has
forsaken me. Even my children have forsaken me. With that thought in mind, he
ordered his army to retreat and declined to attack Williams army.

Weeks later, he retreated to France and never came back.

England
December, 1689

Arent you too happy, Macaronna? Rosa rolled her eyes. Her friend,
Macaronna, was surely being too happy. After all, the beauty was dancing
around in the middle of the town.

I deserve to be too happy. Macaronna paused her movement. Ive

never felt more free like this before.

It had been almost a year since William III and Mary II became joint
monarchs of England. Recently, the Bill of Rights was passed and that made
sure the monarchy could not do the things that James had done before. and
England became a constitutional monarchy. Protestantism remained as
Englands official religion. In addition, this was achieved with nearly no
bloodshed and there was no wars. She couldnt be happier. This revolution was
truly glorious in the eyes of many including her.

Anyway, do you have any gift for Lord Farmwelle this year? Your third
anniversary is coming up this week, right? Rosa asked curiously while having
a playful grin on her face.

Of course, I do. Ive planned a surprise for him. Macaronna said before
whispering something in Rosas ear.

17
Rosa screamed after Macaronna finished her sentence. What?! You are
going to propose to him? Im so happy for you, my dear.

Macaronna planned to propose Farmwelle on their upcoming third

anniversary with the ring she bought recently from her own savings. She
couldnt wait until the day of their of their anniversary come.

But for now, I have to celebrate what I hoped for since a long time ago
first. She thought while dancing in the atmosphere of joy and liberty along with
her companion.

England
January, 1690

The rain was pouring heavily. However, today was too good of a day for
Macaronna and Farmwelle to be upset. The rain meant that the god had
witnessed their love and their marriage. At least thats what they thought.

A few weeks had passed since Macaronnas proposal. Both of them

wouldnt ever forget what happened that day. It was a sunny day. They were
walking in the outskirts of the town. There were a lot of beautiful flowers and it
was a stunning sight. Not many people knew about this gorgeous place.
Macaronna introduced the place to him three years ago.

Nice weather, isnt it? Macaronna said awkwardly as they walked.

Lately, they didnt really have any chance to spend time together. Both of them
were busy.

Yes, I agree. Farmwelle replied. His voice sounded joyful. Maybe we

should find somewhere to rest our legs and talk.

They continued walking for a while before finding a river with some
bushes nearby. They sat down.

18
They talked about a lot things. Farmwelle told Macaronna about how he
ended up wearing wrong side of his pants the whole day and Macaronna told
him about how she once greeted Rosa as a customer because she couldnt
recognize her friend for a moment. These conversations seemed pointless, but
they were happy.

I love you, Farmwelle. Macaronna said but it was different. It was

more loving than usual. Farmwelles heart skipped a beat.

I love you too.

Right after Farmwelle replied, Macaronna proposed to him. It was a

simple question with only four words. Farmwelle was speechless but he didnt
wait a second to say yes.

---

After Farmwelle kneeled and put a ring on Macaronnas ring finger, he

stood up and kissed her lovingly.

They ran outside in the rain freely and joyously. They beamed. They
didnt care about the heavy rain nor the rumbling thunder. They ran as far as
they could until they reached a prairie with lots of flower and it was even more
beautiful than the place they went to. The rain didnt make it lose its beauty at
all. They held hands tightly like they wouldnt be apart from each other ever
again.

I dont care what other people will say about us. Noble and merchants
marriage have got nothing on us Farmwelle spoke.

Me neither. Its our life. Its our love. Macaronna added with tears of
joy. She was crying with the rain.

I love you Macaronna. Forever will. Farmwelle said. A heartbeat after

that, they heard a loud sound.

19
The lightning struck two of them mercilessly. It was as if the sky was
angry. It was as if the world was jealous of their love.

All Macaronna ever wanted were a Protestant king and peaceful love life
with her beloved Farmwelle. Now that life already granted her one wish, itd
had enough.

The rain became heavier. Maybe the rain was crying with them in their
deaths.

---

England
January, 1720

Today was the thirtieth anniversary of her friends death. To be honest,

Rosa didnt really feel sad anymore. When she found out about her death thirty
years ago, she was overwhelmed with shock and grief. She couldnt eat and
sleep for days. Now, it had already been thirty years and Rosa barely felt sad
anymore, but she missed her friend everyday and that was something that would
last forever.

Rosa looked at a fireplace in her house. She spoke to the fire as if it was
Macaronna, her dear friend. Her voice wasnt joyous like when she was young
anymore. It was feeble. I miss you.

A lot of time had passed since the overthrow of James II and the Bills of
Rights. England, as a constitutional monarchy, ensured its people of their rights
and freedom. Divine right was destroyed and the Parliament had gained a lot of
power. This made democracy develop further and Rosa couldnt be happier.
Macaronna would be delighted to know this. The government was shaped into
something she would love.

20
Rosa thought the revolution was truly significant and it had impact on
what England, or maybe the world, was being right now. She felt like she was
going through some kind of era. She didnt really know but she liked to call it
Age of Reason. The revolution created some kind of path. It used reasons. It
was rational. It made people realize rulership came from consent of the ruled,
not from God. After that, many new knowledges and philosophies were being
introduced. She knew the revolution wasnt the only reason why, but it
contributed to the Age of Reason and especially this book she was holding.

You would love this book, wouldnt you? Rosa spoke to the fire again.
She held up the book in her hand. It was called Two Treatises of Government.
You know how much I hate reading and you definitely know how much I suck
at reading.

The fire didnt say anything back. Macaronna didnt say anything back.

Rosa continued. I read this recently, only because you love reading and
it reminds me of you somehow. Its written by John Locke and its totally the
opposite of the book by Thomas Hobbes, the book you gave me because you
disliked it.

Rosa waited for Macaronna to respond but then she realized her friend
was death and she was only talking to fire. It seemed like she had become too
old.

Rosa told the fire about the book. People are born with natural rights and
they are sociable and peaceful by nature. Government is created to secure
peoples rights, so people have the right to revolt. Dont these ideas seem like
your ideas? You could have written this book way before Locke did.

The merchant laughed at her own joke.

Im very positive this book was written in support of the revolution in

1688. I wish you could read it.

21

But I suck at reading so it will take me years to finish the whole book for
you, wont it?

Well, today marks the thirtieth year of my life without you. Reading is
totally the way to mourn.

Thou hast here the beginning and end of a discourse concerning

government; what fate has otherwise disposed of the papers that should have
filled up the middle, and were more than all the rest, it is not worthwhile to tell
thee Rosa stuttered.

The End
