Halloween Aglow: created by Lynn Eddy
Everything I know about quilting could easily fit inside a thimble, but knowledge
and talent are certainly not required to appreciate it. Recently, Bennington held its
beloved annual Quiltfest - the 24th to be exact. My sister in law is a quilter and she
had entered a few pieces in the show, so her brother and I tagged along to
demonstrate our love and support. One of the many things I learned that day was
that some of the quilters name their pieces, and one of hers was named Halloween
Aglow because it actually glows in the dark! Colonial Days and Afternoon Delight
were the names of her other pieces. The beauty of her work did not surprise us, as
we cuddle up with the quilts she made for both of us all winter long.
The individual spirit radiating from each quilt was palpableall one of a kind.
There were some very impressive entries from young quilters, which was so nice
to see. After a quick tour and debriefing from my sister in law, I was getting pretty
good at identifying at least four common styles of quilting: patchwork, appliqu,
paper pieced and English paper piecing. Most of my favorites were either holiday
or book themed. There was a Harry Potter quilt that was particularly clever, and a
red and white Walking in a Winter Wonderland quilt that just took my breath away.
The final first place winners (a tie) for bed quilts were Caribbean Dreams, created
by Sandy LePoidevin, and Floral Treasures, created by Janice Cunningham. First
place for wall quilts was Modern Dresden, created by Abbie Dansereau. In my
humble and undeveloped quilters mind, they were all winners. Every single one
represented hours upon hours of dedication, focus, patience, and perseverance. I
understand this because I knit and sew.
Handmade things are a labor of love, and if you are ever lucky enough to be
given something handcrafted, it should be treasured, honoring the hours spent
creating something especially for you.
As Rumi said: When someone is counting out gold for you, dont look at your
hands, or the gold. Look at the giver.

TREK FOR HOPE 5K WALK/RUN is slated for Sunday, Oct. 8 in Village Park, Quaker Street, in
Granville, New York. Coming at the height of fall foliage season, the run takes participants through
village streets, a Rail Trail, and over a covered footbridge for an enjoyable autumn experience.The
5K takes place at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 8. It will be preceded by a 1 mile Kids Run at 9 a.m. Both events
start at Village Park. Registration will take place from 8 to 9 a.m. T-shirts will be given to the first

FOUR MILE RUN/WALK The first annual Phoenix-Feeder
Four Mile Run/Walk is scheduled for 10 a.m. Oct. 1, beginning
and ending at the Hudson Falls Fire Station, 220 Main St.The
loop course will cover residential streets in the village. Unique
shirts are assured for all pre-registrants and medals will run three-
deep in 11 age groups. The awards ceremony will be held in
Juckett Park. There will be refreshments. Registration is $15 pre-
race; $20 on race day. Entry forms can be downloaded at
adirondackrunners.org and can be obtained by emailing Bob
Cook at rwcook1949@gmail.com.
32ND ANNUAL HARTFORD STEWARTS SPUD RUN will
take place on Sat., Oct. 14, at the Hartford Central School,
Intersection of Rts. 40 & 149, 15 miles east of Glens Falls. The 1
mile Fun Run goes off at 9 am, followed by the competitive 5K
Race at 10 am. All 5K Pre-Registrants will receive a Race T-
Shirt. Post-Race refreshments include: coffee, oranges, Phils
Almost Famous Five-Alarm Chili and Spud Run Birthday
Cakelets. Awards will be given to the first three male and female
finishers overall, as well as to the first three in each of the ten age
divisions. The fun run is free. Entry for the 5K is $15, $20 on
race day. The race benefits the Senior Class of 2018. Applications

downloaded from www.adirondackrunners.org. Further

7TH ANNUAL FRESH MAINE LOBSTER BAKE
OCTOBER 7TH. Herschel-Argyle Masonic Lodge #508 will
be serving a Columbus Day Weekend Lobster Bake on Sat. Oct.
7th, serving from 3-6 pm, at the Masonic Lodge on Main St. in
Hartford. This will be eat in or take out. Dinner includes: Fresh
whole lobster, baked potato, roll, coleslaw, vegetable & dessert.
