PREFACE

The author thanked me profusely to God for his blessing and grace for the
writer, so he can finish this paper on time. Thank you to Mrs. Badroeni as an English
lecturer who always helps her students and provides a lot of useful knowledge.
This is one of the tasks in advanced English that explains what time it is.
This is not a perfect model so I'd expect criticism and advice to be better. Hopefully
this paper can be used as a reference to learn about what time is it.

Introduction

1.1 Background
Language is very important in human life. Language is means of
communication. Without a language, a person cannot communicate with others.
English is a language in the world. People call it a international language. In our
school, the English language has been given since the fourth grade of the elementary
school up to university.
Most people in the world from the different countries and nations speak
language. Also, many scientific studies such as education, science, religion,
technology, commerce or politic are written in the language.
Language includes four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Writing
is language activity that needs much cognitive concentration. When writing, a
writer is challenged to use just linguistics code without helping of other codes, take
for instance, gestures. A writer has to arrange some ideas and transform them into
his thinking carefully in writing codes on papers.

1.2 Writing Purpose

2.1 Time Pronunciation

According to the Oxford dictionary, "time (read: / tm /) is the period of


minutes, hours, days, etc.". In Indonesian, time means "waktu".

Generally there are two formulas for the stated hours are:
Hours + Minutes
This method is the easiest way to show the time, just read the numbers in
English. Example: 02.25 = It's two twenty-five.
Minutes + past / to + hour
In this way we should mention the first minute of the new clock and use the
words 'past' and 'to' to explain less or more minutes during that hour.
Example: 08.10 = It's ten past eight.

There are several terms commonly used in saying time, including :


Oclock
If the clock shows the exact hour (the long needle is right to 12) then we
should say something like this: It's six o'clock
A quarter
Used to denote a time of less or more 15 minutes, for example: Its a quarter
past ten
Half
Used to declare time more than 30 minutes, for example: Its half past ten
Past
If the hour-long needle shows more 1-30 minutes, then we should say: It's
ten minutes past nine
To
If the long needle shows more than 31 minutes upwards, then we should
say: It's ten to nine

In the pronunciation time can be done in 2 ways, as follows :
Hours followed by Minutes
6.25: It is six twenty-five.
3.17: It is three seventeen.
8.55: It is eight fifty-five.
9.40: It is nine forty.
Minute followed by Clock
6.25: It is twenty-five past six.
3.17: It is seventeen past three.
8.55: It is five to nine.
9.40: It is twenty to ten.

To better understand the material, we see the following discussion:

What time is it ? It is 10.15.


We can say:
It is ten fifteen.
It is fifteen past ten.
It is a quarter past ten.

What time is it? It is 10.30.


We can say:
It is ten thirty.
It is thirty past ten.
It is half past ten.

What time is it? It is 10.45.


We can say:
It is ten forty-five.
It is forty-five past ten.
It is a quarter to eleven.

We can say:
It is three twenty.
It is twenty past three.

Sentence to ask for hours:


What time is it now?
What is the time?
What time is it right now?
Do you know what time is it?
May I know what time is it?
What time exactly the movie start?
When does the store is open?
When should we meet again?

3.1 Conclusion
In the pronunciation time there are several terms used, such as o'clock, a
quarter, half, past, and to. there are also several ways in the pronunciation time,
the hour followed by minutes and minutes followed by hours. we must be able
to say the time because it is very important and also widely used in everyday
life.
