4 Software Operation.
The operation of the software is very user friendly and well laid out with a simple,
clean graphical user interface. All options are set to the side and clearly labelled, all
operational information, configurations and results are encapsulated within a main
window to the right. There is also a button on the menu bar for direct checking for
updates to the software.

For the first task, the registry cleaner module will be used; however any registry
entries relating to fonts will be overlooked.

4.1 Directions for operation. (Task 1)

1. Start up the program by double clicking the shortcut on the desktop.

5 Critical Appraisal
In this section, I will express my critical view of TweakNow PowerPack 2009. The
main points I will be covering will be the installation, the documentation, along with
how useful and simple the program is for anyone to use.

5.1 Installation.
TweakNow PowerPack 2009 is delivered as a simple and user friendly windows
installer. There are no requirements for technical knowledge during this process as all
the user has to do is choose whether or not to accept the license agreement, choose a
destination to install to (Default directory is populated as standard), and choose
whether or not they would like a desktop and/or quick launch icon.
The installation time is also minimal, taking less than a minute to install from start to
finish. By simply following the step by step installation guide in the user
documentation there can be no fault.

5.2 Documentation.
The documentation accompanying TweakNow PowerPack 2009 is minimal at best
and is encapsulated into the “Help” file. For a program with the potential to boost a
systems performance or essentially destroy it from the inside out, there are no blatant
warnings or tutorials to be found within the documentation. All the included
documentation does is give a brief happy description of the different modules and
leaves the user to their own devices. More would be expected from a program such as
this. Another downfall of the documentation is that there is no information about the
developers or the company.

5.3 Software.
The software itself is easy to use. Very aesthetically well laid out with a crisp clean
interface. All modules are easy to find with no trawling through menus and sub-
menu’s to find what you’re looking for. However, the program seems a little basic.
The reason for this is that it is too well laid out, too automated, there is almost nothing
for the user to do or configure. For a program that has the ability to speed up or crash
the users system, it doesn’t offer much in the way of customisable options. The
program also seems a bit too basic in both look and feel, and whilst using it I found
myself wondering if it was actually doing anything and double checking with another
program. For a novice computer user this program may be one of the best options
when starting to dabble with system tweaking. However, for anyone that is even
remotely comfortable with their computing knowledge, there are better programs.

6.1 Changes implemented.

1. Added Screen Captures to the document to give users a visual reference when
talking about the program.
2. Changed word in 4.2.5 from “directories to exclude” to “Directory or file to
exclude”.
3. Added “Folder will only exist if Task 1 has been completed. Otherwise choose

folder “C:\windows\system32” as the folder to exclude.”

Tweak Now
Introduction

Background
I found that the introduction was well written.
Software purpose
The purpose of the application and its features were well displayed. The only thing I
could suggest is that you expand on some of the features like”Virtual Desktop” and
explain what they mean.
Development Information
I know how you say you can't find any more information, however you can expand
upon the company who developed it – like its history, where it’s situated and what
kind of company is it.
Recent Changes in Tweaknow Power 2009 Free
Good information on recent changes.

Installation

Downloading and Installing Tweaknow Power 2009

Make sure the download link is displayed on the printout, for when I tried to for the
instructions there was no link where the link should be. The requirements for the
usage of the application are well displayed. The instructions can be a little more in
depth – explaining what the options chosen do and if they were to change what would
happen? Especially the installation of Full, compact, or customize. One thing when I
first looked through the usernote is “NEED MORE SCREENSHOTS” for there was
not even one. Screenshots are good to you and the user – it helps you explain what
you are asking of the reader, but also lets the user know they are heading in the right
direction (like a safe point if you will).

Page 12
David Duffy
Personal Project: SA0801A

Documentation
Well informed again but still need screenshots - even if to show what the help
window is like. Also because the link to the download site was missing I found
TweakNow on cnet.com download which only had the latest version 1.7.2, so see if
there are differences and if there are point them out and explain why the screens look
different and that.

Software Operations

Directions for Operations (task1)

Very nice and simple step by step walkthrough, but like before, a few screenshots
would make it perfect and more user friendly in my opinion
Directions for Operations (task2)
It all goes well until number 9 where you have to find the folder - it was not on the
computer I was using and it might not be when someone else is using it – could be
somewhere else in the c drive, a screenshot would have been a great help here, put
any options on why there is no folder and try to by pass it.

8 Appendix 3

8.1 Personal review of others user note

Background
After reading the background section, and without running the software, do you
know:
- What the software is called? Unreal Editor 3
- What the software is for / what its main purpose is? The editing and creation of
‘MODs?’ and levels for the game ‘Unreal’.
- Why it was developed? To create the game ‘Unreal’.
- Who developed the software and when? The software was developed in 1998,
doesn’t say who it was developed by.

Comments:
For such an immense program, there should be some more information on the
background of the software as opposed to one page. There is no information about
who actually created the software. Overall pretty basic.

Installation
Does the installation guide provide sufficient information for you to:
- Find the software from its download site? No download information supplied. One
file was supplied by the document creator however that was in .ut3 format, which
requires unreal editor to install. From researching the web, unreal editor is only
included in the game unreal tournament. Neither of which were supplied or readily
available for download.
- Download the software into an appropriate (file) location? No download available.
- Install the software such that the software is able to run? Not available.
- Is the selection of any configuration options explained clearly? Not available.
- Is too much attention given to routine tasks that a typical user would know how to
work through? No, quite basic installer. (as far as I can tell from screen caps)
- Is any ancillary software platform required and is this made clear? There’s none
required for this program.

Comments:
No installation was possible as I needed Unreal Tournament game to be able to use
the editor as it is included in the game files.
Apart from that, easy to follow.

Page 14
David Duffy
Personal Project: SA0801A

Documentation
Where documentation exists either on the download site or as part of the software:
- Is the location of the documentation indicated? There is a web address supplied for
the documentation. However the address is simply for the home page. The website
is a developers site that supplies help and tutorials for all types of coding and
design. Had to search through the site to find anything about the unreal engine.
A more direct link should be included in the user guide so the reader doesn’t lose
interest while looking for information.
- Are the contents of that documentation summarised appropriately? No. Not
summarised at all.
Where there is no documentation evident on the site or as part of the software is this
noted? No.

Comments:
Not a lot of documentation provided, would need to put DIRECT link in to show the
user what documentation was provided.

Software operation
The software operation section, which is the most substantial section of the user
note, should provide a general overview of the software and how to use it together
with at least two substantial tasks to be completed.
In general, does the overview provide:
- A comprehensive summary of the overall operation of the software? There were
brief instructions for using the buttons needed to be used. Very basic instructions
for such a complex program.
- An explanation of the main interface components, e.g. windows, menu options,
such that you understand the overall software interface? No. only buttons and tabs
that were explained were the ones to be used. Which were very few.
- Does the overview provide sufficient content to contextualise the tasks (below)?
Yes they are sufficient to complete the objectives.

For each task described:

- Is there a step-by-step guide for the completion of that task? Seemed clear enough.
Couldn’t complete tasks though as I don’t have the unreal game or editor.
- Is there any ambiguity in any of the steps in the task? No it was all clear and
understandable.
- Is the purpose of each step made clear? There is no purpose explained as to why I
am doing the majority of the steps… just instructions.
- Does the selected task, in your opinion, reveal some of the core functionality / key
features of the software? Probably. Again couldn’t complete tasks due to lack of
software.

Page 15
David Duffy
Personal Project: SA0801A

Comments:
Couldn’t complete tasks as I didn’t have the software.

Critical appraisal
The critical appraisal should address key strengths and weaknesses of the software
product and/or its documentation and, where appropriate, consider that software
within the context of alternative approaches.

Does the critical appraisal:

- Identify the strengths (useful functionality / parts that work very well) of the software
and are these justified?

- Identify the weaknesses (obscure functionality / parts that are not well
implemented / appear to have no value) of the software and are these justified?

- Appraise, where it exists, the documentation as a useful guide to the installation

and/or operation of the software?

- Relate the specified software to other software that may provide similar
functionality?

Comments:
There was no critical appraisal, there was a conclusion. However, for such an
immense program the conclusion was 4 lines long. Could do with more detail,
opinion, pro’s and con’s etc.
