Week

We kick started All Ameri-
can week by honoring the
first responders on 9/11. The
police and fire department
drove by the school and we
welcomed them with cheers
and handmade posters.
Then, the essay and poster
contest started. To celebrate
America students made
posters and wrote essays in
S E P T E M B E R
response to John F. Kenne-
dys quote Ask not what
your country can do for you,
but what you can do can for
country. We wrapped up
the essay and poster contest
on the fourteenth. On the
eighteenth we had the All
American assembly. At the
assembly teachers handed
out the Character Awards
for respect. They also an-
nounced the winners of the
essay and poster contest.
Congratulations to the win-
ners! Our band played a cou-
ple songs, middle school cho-
rus sang a few songs, and
high school dance preformed

a lyrical piece. After the
awards and performances,
the ROTC (Reserve Officers'
Training Corps) came in for
a demonstration. We saw
former Clover Garden stu-
dents, Jordan Garrison and
Cody Wilkerson, who are
now in the program. Admin-
istration proudly announced
they will be updating the wall
with the pictures of all the
former grizzlies that are now
serving our country. The
band performed one last
song as we walked out of the
gym. What a wonderful way
to wrap up All American
week!

October is almost here! Weve had a busy first nine weeks. Thank you to those of you who attended Face-to-
Face meetings on September 18th. Hopefully, you were able to connect with your students teacher about any
academic concerns that you are facing. The first 9 weeks is almost over. Reports cards will go out on Oct. 6 th.
Please let our registrar, Mrs. Nina know by email at ninamiller@cgsnc.org if you are unable to access Pow-
erSchool to check on your students academic progress.
As we reflect on this first 9 weeks, it has made us think about what Clover Garden School is all about. Clover
Garden School is a college prepatory school. What does this mean? This does not mean more work. It means
preparing your student to be ready for college and to be ready for the next level of academia. Our mission is to
have students begin thinking about college the moment that they step foot on our campus. Yes, we teach at an
advanced level because we have a different mindset. We have the mindset that all of our students have the ability
to achieve more and do more. We hope that you will join us in helping to prepare your students for college be-
cause you made the choice to attend Clover Garden School, a college prepatory institution.
Our teachers offer tutoring each week. But, we have also included some information about tutoring available
through Elon University in this newsletter as well. Feel free to contact them if you are interested in additional
tutoring opportunities. Academic break is coming up soon. Thank you for all that you do to help your student be
successful!

 Marching Band
The marching band has completed over half of their season! They had a competition
last Saturday, September 23 at George Washington High
School. The competition was very successful! The band re-
ceived two trophies. One trophy was for first place percussion
for class 2A and second place overall for class 2A.

They have four competitions left. Here are the dates and loca-
tions for each competition:

New for Clover Garden Dance- Afterschool Ballet Classes!

Next Tuesday a Ballet class will start for a select group of registered students. The focus will
be the fundamentals of Ballet and the proceeds will go back into the dance department. Clog-
ging is North Carolinas state dance. The 4th grade dance classes are learning about North
Carolina and learned a clogging dance taught by Laney Culberson (Thank you Laney!). The
classes will compete in a friendly competition against each other in October. The winner will
receive a trophy and an ice cream party. K-5th grade dance classes are busy working on Hal-
loween themed dances for their October celebration. The concert is a joint venture between
dance and music. A new look is coming to the Dance Teams! Awesome new outfits are on
order and everyone is quite excited about them. There will be a Dance Spirit Night at Ci-
Cis November 6th at 4:00pm. Please take a night off from the kitchen and support Clover
Garden Dance.

Rise Up: how FCA is helping those in need

The middle and high school FCAs have a lot going on this fall. Clover Garden FCA will be hosting a Christian mu-
sic concert on October 5th at 6 p.m. for the entire county! The money made at this concert will go to help the
victims of Hurricane Harvey. The collection dates will be from September 25th to October 6th. It will be held in
the gym and will include Christian bands and singers from across Alamance County. The cost to enter and partici-
pate is $5 and donations are welcome.

The FCA will also be hosting its annual 5k Color Walk to End Alzheimers. Forms have gone out to the entire ele-
mentary school. If you would like a form, see Mrs. Brandi or Mrs. Walker. We encourage everyone to come! We
need a lot participants to make both of these events successful and to raise as much money as possible for these
causes. Both of these events go with the idea FCA stands by which is to rise up and help take care of those in
need!

Athletics
Sports have been very successful this
month.
Middle School Soccer
Middle School soccer has been pretty
busy. They had games last week and
came out with many wins. Middle
School has an away game at Uwharrie
this week on Monday September 25th,
starting at 4:30. Then on Wednesday
they have another game against River
Mill Academy. They end the week with
a home game against TMSA.
High School Soccer
High school soccer has practice every
day after school when a game is not
going. They played a game last week
against Hawbridge at Springwood
Park, but lost 4-0 and ended early
because someone was seriously in-
jured. They have a few upcoming
games, one on September 25th at 5:00
at springwood against Hawbridge.
Then the next day they have one at
5:30 against Piedmont classical which
will be played away. They play again
on Wednesday the 27th against River
Mill which will be their last game this
week. High
Middle School Volleyball
Middle School volleyball had many
games last week. On Friday September

the 19th against TMSA and won in 4 sets.
They also played an interesting game
against our own CGS Varsity B team on the
22nd. They will play on Tuesday Septem-
ber 26th at Piedmont Classical but the
location is yet to be determined. They play
a home game the next day against River
Mill. Then again on Friday at 4:30. That
game will be away.
Cross Country
Cross country has improved drastically.
High School had a meet on Saturday the
16th at Pfeiffer University. Gabriel placed
9th out of everyone on JV. Around one

High/Middle School: Hidden Figures

Hidden Figures is the incredible untold story of
three African American women, Katherine John-
son (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan
(Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle
Mone), who helped run the NASA space pro-
gram in the 1960s. These women played a huge
part in the Space Race but they never received
the recognition they deserved. According to
Rotten Tomatoes, 93% of the people who
watched this movie said they liked it. It has re-
ceived a lot of good reviews and it was even
nominated for three Oscars. While the movie
didnt actually win an Oscar, it triumphed at the
box office, making 231.3 million U.S. dollars.
Hidden Figures is rated PG so it is appropriate
for all ages, especially for those looking for posi-
tive and inspirational role models. I definitely
recommend this movie to everyone.

The movie Sing is a wonderful child- friendly
movie. I recommend it to people of all ages. It is
a movie the whole family can watch together.
Sing was released on December 21, 2016. The
director of this extraordinary movie is Garth
Jennings. The movie isnt just entertaining, it
shows one of the most valuable lessons of reality.
It expresses that you as an individual should nev-
er give up on your dreams and what you love. It
includes other life lessons as well. It also informs
the audience that you cannot let fear get in the
way of what you love. By expressing your talent,
as the characteristics such Rosita did, it shows no
matter the age always follow your dreams. This
movie is very influential and has lessons of reality
that appeal to younger kids as well as adults. I
recommend this movie to people of all ages.

Doctor WHO is Jodie Whit-
taker?

On January 23 2017, Peter Capaldi announced
in an interview on BBC radio 2 that he would
be leaving the show. Fans were sent into a mad
dash of speculation for 7 months as to who
would portray The Doctor next. And on July
16th 2017, Jodie Whittacre was announced as
the 13th doctor. But just who is she? And what
is Doctor Who? Well, fear not, because Im here
to tell you all about WHO, Doctor Who is!
First of all, just what is Doctor Who? Doctor
Who is the worlds longest running sci-fi Tv
series, with 50 plus years of adventure and
fans. The show originally premiered on No-
vember 23 1963 and ended with a Tv movie in
1996. However, it was brought back on March
25 2005 with a soft reboot, and is still airing
today. The premise of the show is The Doctor.
Not Doctor Who, The Doctor. The Doctor
is a member of an alien race called Time lords.
Hes been alive for thousands of years, and
uses a machine called The T.A.R.D.I.S (Time,
And, Relevant, Dimension, In, Space) It can
travel any were in space in time, and is bigger
on the inside than the outside. He runs around,
usually with a female companion, helping people
out were ever he can.
One crucial part of Doctor Who is regeneration.
Basically, if a Time Lord is dyeing, they can re-
generate, replacing all the cells in their body and
mind. Thus changing their appearance and per-
sonality, while retaining all memories. Each
Body can last for thousands of years. But its tor was a tremendous role model for boys,
not full proof, as if a time lord is killed between
Bodies they actually die. Though this rule and
others have been broken. In reality, this is the
writers excuse for changing the person playing
The Doctor when they quit or their contracts
run out. Enter Jodi Whittaker.
Jodi Whittaker was born on June the 3rd 1982
in Skelmanthorpe England. Her first professional
performance was in The Storm at the Shake-
speare Globe Theater right after graduating
from Guildhall School of Music and Drama with
a gold medal in acting. In 2009, she worked on
the short film Wish 143, which was nominated
for the Academy Award for Live Action Short
Film at the 83rd Academy Awards. In 2011 she
performed in the cult film Attack the block
Witch stared John Boyega of Star Wars fame. In
2013 she co-stared in the British detective dra-
ma Broadchurch witch also co-stared David
Tennant, who had previously played the fan
favorite 10th Doctor. So if her rsum of per-

formances says anything, its that shes defi-
antly got the talent to play The Doctor. So
good luck Jodi Whittaker!
In Doctor Who, The Doctor has always
been a man, so choosing to make The Doc-
tor a woman stirred up some controversy
in the community. Fans argue that The Doc-
as The Doctor would always out think his
enemies, as opposed to beating the ever
loving crap out of them. A sentiment shared
by Peter Davidson, who played the 5th
Doctor from 1981-1984, as when asked
about the casting at SDCC 2017, he said If
I feel any doubts, its the loss of a role mod-
el for boys who I think Doctor Who is vitally
important for. So I feel a bit sad about that,
but I understand the argument that you
need to open it up. However, Colin Baker,
who played the 6th Doctor from 1984-1986
fired back at him, calling his statement
absolute rubbish. He also said Well you
dont have to be of a gender of someone to
be a role model, cant you be a role model
as people? So, its up to you. Is the new
Doctor a step forwards, or a loss of a role
model?
