CITY OF CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA
Monthly Report
Public Works Department
August 2017

TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council Members

SUBMITTED BY: Mike Branson, City Forester

APPROVED BY: Chip Rerig, City Administrator

AUGUST 2017 FORESTER REPORT

Carmel Beach:

A new smokeless fire pit device was placed on Carmel Beach as an alternate to the kettle fire pits to see how
well it performs under the Citys Pilot Fire Program. While not completely smoke free, the new device heats air
through its double wall containment to provide secondary burning of smoke produced by the burning fuel. Staff
also continued weekday cleaning, monitoring, and data collection of all ten (10) wood fire pits along the beach.

North Dunes:

In the North Dunes habitat restoration area, biologist Joey Canepa watered new native dune plants, removed
weeds, and counted the population of endangered Tidestroms lupine.

Trees:

Public Works/Forestry staff removed five (5) dead trees and planted a new Monterey Pine on Santa Fe Street.
John Leys Tree Service continues to water 79 trees planted by the Friends of Carmel Forest over the past
year and a half through their centennial and commemorative tree planting programs.

City Forester Mike Branson attended a meeting of the California Pitch Canker Task Force at Point Reyes
National Seashore. The Task Force reviewed its mission and outreach efforts to keep its members, and the
