1 Change History
eRAN12.1 01 (2017-03-08)
This issue does not include any changes.
Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) UEs are generally battery powered, but need to have
a long standby time so they must be very electrically efficient. The NB-IoT Power Saving
feature package helps save as much UE power as possible, prolonging battery life, and
ensuring that the downlink delay for NB-IoT services does not exceed reasonable limits.
This feature package includes only MLOFD-120220 Idle Mode eDRX. For details about this
feature, see NB-IoT Radio and Performance Basics Feature Parameter Description.
4.1 Overview
Most NB-IoT services must supply wider coverage than LTE FDD services do, for example,
underground intelligent parking and indoor intelligent meter reading services. The Enhanced
NB-IoT Coverage feature package helps improve the uplink and downlink coverage
performance so as to meet the coverage enhancement requirements.
4.2 Applications
The Enhanced NB-IoT Coverage feature package can improve coverage, thereby increasing
network capacity. For details about when and how to deploy the features in this package, see
the feature parameter descriptions referenced below.
The following table lists the features that can be activated in each scenario.
Coverage MLOFD-12020 This feature extends the coverage area, NB-IoT Radio
expansion 1 NB-IoT and if coverage enhancement is required, and
Coverage can deliver up to 20 dB higher coverage Performance
Extension in the uplink and downlink than the Basics
original radio access technology (RAT). Feature
In the coverage enhancement area, the Parameter
access success rate is increased and call Description
drop rate is decreased.
4.3 Value
The Enhanced NB-IoT Coverage feature package increases NB-IoT network capacity,
improves coverage, and enhances performance.
l Capacity
UL 4-Antenna Receive Diversity increases the average cell uplink throughput by
10% to 50% compared with UL 2-Antenna Receive Diversity. The throughput
gains, however, are affected by interference. When there is weak interference, the
gains are large. When the interference is strong, the gains are small. The maximum
gains are achieved when interference is similar to white noise.
With SFN, the cell throughput remains unchanged in light load scenarios, but the
average single-UE downlink throughput increases by about 30% to 80%.
l Coverage
The significant diversity and array gains provided by UL 4-Antenna Receive
Diversity deliver 1 dB to 3 dB more coverage than UL 2-Antenna Receive
Diversity.
The NB-IoT Coverage Extension feature extends the coverage area and ensures
service provision for UEs in coverage enhancement areas.
SFN improves the downlink coverage of UEs at the edges of the original physical
cells.
l Performance
SFN effectively reduces the co-channel interference between cells. In outdoor
densely populated urban areas, SFN improves the average downlink SINR in a cell
by about 2 dB when the cell is served by three combined common RRUs and the
system load reaches 100%.
The NB-IoT Coverage Extension feature improves the access success rate and the
RRC connection setup success rate in the coverage enhancement area. It also
decreases the call drop rate and reduces the residual block error rate (RBLER).
