CITATION
What is citation?
If you are referring to an idea from another work, book, author, an article, picture or chart
that is NOT YOURS and you include one of them in your work (for example, in your
assignment)
You need to make reference to the author by stating the year of publication, title,
publisher name and location of the publication.
There are 2 types of citation style APA and MLA and they are different in many ways.
As for this class we will use APA.
APA citation
In-text citation: Inside the written text. APA in-text citation style uses the author's last
name and the year of publication, for example: (Field, 2005).
Reference list: At the end of the written text and is arranged alphabetically by author's
surname, year (and letter, if necessary) and is placed at the end of the work. A reference
list is the detailed list of references that are cited in your work. (REFER TO EXAMPLE)
How to Quote from Printed books, magazine eBook, Article and Online
materials?
1. In-text citation (Basic): Books

an explanation as to why.

How to Quote from Quran and Hadith?

1) Al-Quran
Before the quotation, "according to the Quran...", "Allah says in the Quran..." or "when it
is said to them,..."
A saying / speech should start and ended with "....".
After the quotation, the translation will end with the name or the number of chapter
(surah) and verse (ayat). Example: "...blessings and mercy from Allah" [2:157] or [Al-
Imran:157]
Example:

According to the Quran: "They are those on whom (descend) blessings and mercy from
Allah" [2:157]

Allah says in the Quran: "When you remember Me, I will remember you. Be grateful to Me, and
reject not Faith." [2:152]

Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error. Whoever rejects evil
and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah
hears and knows all things. [2:256]

When it is said to them, "Believe in what Allah has sent down," they (the People of the Book)
say, "We believe in what was sent down to us:" yet they reject all besides, even if it be Truth
confirming what is with them. [Quran 2:91]

2) Hadith

Before the quotation, "As reported by ...", "Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) or (peace be
upon him) / (p.h.b).
A saying / speech should start and ended with "....".
After the quotation, the translation will end with "narrated by..." or "Prophet Muhammad
(s) said as reported by Abu Said Al Khudri in Sahih Bukhari"
Example:

As reported by Ibn Masud, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "They are the
losers, those who make the religion hard and tough. They imperil themselves who enforce tough
practices of Islam. They destroy themselves, those who are extremes."

[W]hoever abstains from asking others, Allah will make him contented, and whoever tries to
make himself self-sufficient, Allah will make him self-sufficient. And whoever remains patient,
Allah will make him patient. Nobody can be given a blessing better and greater than
patience." Prophet Muhammad (s) said as reported by Abu Said Al Khudri in Sahih Bukhari,
vol 2 hadith 548.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said That which is lawful is clear, and that
which is unlawful is also quite clear. Between these two is that which is ambiguous, which most
people do not know. One who avoids the doubtful safeguards his faith and his honor. Riyadh-
us-Salaheen, Hadith 588

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was asked what type of earning was best, and
he replied: A mans work with his hands and every (lawful) business transaction. Al-Tirmidhi,
Hadith 846.

The Prophet also said: A truthful and trustworthy merchant is associated with the
prophets. Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 50.
