In my previous post I tried to explain what types of Geophysicists exist in the

Petroleum Industry, i.e. seismic Acquisition and Processing experts as appose to
two main groups of seismic Interpretation specialists. In this post I would like to share
my view on 'why Petroleum Company would hire a Geophysicist' and 'how to
choose the right one'.

Geophysicist will help with -

1. Identification of the first exploration and the subsequent development borehole

locations and trajectories

2. Drilling the well safely

3. Providing the size of notional or discovered accumulation (or Gross Rock Volume)

4. Delineating the area of the best reservoir quality both in case of exploration and
development projects

5. Understanding of the seismic data predictive power limits and what techniques can
be employed to reduce the uncertainties in the conclusions offered

The skills each Geophysicist should possess -

The skill number One is a strong grounding in Geoscience - tectonics and

structures, sedimentology and stratigraphy, geomechanics and rock physics,
petroleum systems, etc.

Every Geophysicist should know how to produce an accurate image of the

subsurface, which includes acquisition and processing skills

Geophysicist must know how to perform structural and stratigraphic

interpretation of the seismic data

Geophysicist must be an expert in the subsurface mapping techniques

Time-to-Depth conversion is probably the Second most important skill every

Geophysicist should have

Reservoir characterization in respect of best primary and secondary porosity

development areas identification

Geomechanical models building in support of safe drilling operations

Time-Lapse effects identification and interpretation

Geophysicist should provide a bridge between Well-site Geologist/Petrophysicist

and Geo-modeling specialists, and be a good friend of Reservoir Engineer. All
his/her efforts should be concentrated on supplying the subsurface team with TWO
main pieces of information, namely the size of accumulation and the quality of the
reservoir.

And again each and every skill is being

developed via trial and error type of
approach, i.e. experience is a key.

You have to start somewhere as Elena says. Plus the role have to be defined according to one
specialization. I am civil engineer by background, rock mechanics. I have knowledge in geology but not
as specialist so I manage but to be on same level as geologist with specializations I have to start all
over again. However my skills are pretty good at elastic modeling. Rock p Lihat lainnya

Vladimir Moskalev I think you mistake skill for knowledge. You can be aware of things, know
them, you might even try 'em one or two times, but you can't call it a skill until you're certain
you can do it flawlessly on your own and make money in it.

Agree Elena that the set of skills I described is hard to get and diicult to find but this is what
many subsurface managers would be looking for, I think, based on experience.

Looking for a job related to seismic data processing and interpretation. Eligible for work,
Vladimir Moskalev of course they would. Because they would prefer hiring a do-it-all person
instead of a team to cut the salary expenses thus putting a tremendous pressure on that single
person. Clients want everything done yesterday, the data volumes are huge, one man can only
hold it for so long.
