PLATE AND FRAME FILTER PRESS

AIM:

To determine the specific cake resistance (),the filter medium resistance (R m) and the
cake porosity using plate and frame filter press.

THEORY:

A more satisfactory and versatile type of filter is represented by plate and frame filter
press. It is made up of solid plates and hollow frames. Plate and frame are assembled
alternatively and filter cloths are kept on either side of the frame. During initial filtration
slurry is pumped at constant pressure into the hollow frame. The filtrate passes through the
filter cloth and the solids are retained by the cloth and form bed of solids in between the
frame. When the filtration is continue further the filtrate passes through the porous in the bed
of solids under laminar flow condition and passes through the filter cloth and is collected in
the filtrate tank. Plate and frame filter press is a batch filter and used as a cost of labor for
unit volume of the product quite low. Kozney- Carmen eqn. are used to find out resistances.

FORMULAS USED:

1. Concentration of filter cake C =
1[({ }1)]

Where Ww-Weight of wet cake in kg

Wd - Weight of dry cake in kg

2. Specific cake resistance: = m/kg

3. Filter Medium Resistance Rm = m-1

4. Cake porosity =(Weight of the wet cake)-(weight of the dry cake)/Weight of dry cake
5. Filtration Characteristics, = ()

Where s = Compressibility coefficient

Weight of wet cake = kg

Weight of dry cake = kg

Diameter of collecting tank = m

Density of filtrate, = kg/m3

Viscosity of filtrate, = N.s/m2

No of plates =

PROCEDURE:

1. Prepare 2 % slurry of CaCO3in 5 liter of water uniformly.

2. Pour the slurry into the tank by opening the inlet valve and vent.

3. Adjust the compressed air flow rate till the pressure is constant at 0.25 Kg/cm2 by
using vent

4. Place the filter cloth over the frame and tighten by means of ram.

5. Open the drain valve and start the stop watch at the same time.

6. Note the time taken for the filtrate in a receiver tank raise by 2cm.

7. After completion of filtration, collect some of the filter cake in the watch glass and
calculate wet weight and dry weight.

8. Collect all the cake in the filrate and repeat the procedure for 0.5 Kg/cm2 and 0.75
Kg/m2 pressure.

GRAPH:

Draw a graph between t/v vs v and find the values of intercept and slope.

MODEL CALCULATION:

Filtration characteristics of leaf filter has been drawn and the values are:

1. Average specific cake resistance, = _______________.

2. Average filter cake resistance, Rm = _______________.
3. Filtration Characteristics equation, = _______________.
4. Cake porosity () =_______________.
