Introduction
The Water Resources AM Practice Problems and Assessment Guide
includes the top 24 questions that could be on the AM portion of the PE
Exam. This practice exam also includes an assessment section for you to
quickly evaluate your strengths and weaknesses in the different subtopics.
All the questions and solutions are clearly labeled as to what topics they
are concentrated on. This allows you to clearly understand what subject
matter you are having trouble with or already fully comprehend. This
allows you to studying smarter by focusing your efforts on the areas that
you really need to.
It is important to note that these problems only assess your ability with
quantitative type questions. The actual exam is made up of 70% (+/-10%)
quantitative questions and 30% (+/- 10%) qualitative word problems
type questions. The word problems are too extensive to anticipate given
that any problem in any topic could be asked about any minor detail. For
these types of problems the best way to study is to just fully understand
the overall concepts and theory of each subtopic.
Several of the qualitative questions and solutions in this assessment guide
are longer than on the actual exam. We have incorporated more than one
key concept into many of the questions. The difficulty level will be about
the same as you will encounter on test day, but the problems will take a
little longer to solve so dont worry about solving them in 6 minutes.
Your goal here is to understand the concepts and formulas of each
problem.

Understanding The water
resources PORTION
A big piece of passing the PE Exam is to fully understanding the test you are going to be
taking. A lot of students take this for granted and really lose time studying the wrong material.

If you make sure you are studying the correct material for the exam there is not that much
material to learn.

Water Resource Engineering (8/40) = 20%

The Water Resources Section is made up of 8 main topics (below). Most likely there will be
one question for each topic in the morning portion of the PE Exam. These problems cover all
the key concepts that you must know.

A. Open-Channel Flow
B. Storm collection and drainage
C. Storm characteristics
D. Runoff Analysis
E. Detention/retention ponds
F. Pressure Conduit
G. Energy and/or continuity equation
H. Soil Erosion and sediment control

Question #1: Industrial process water (density 62.4 lbs/ft3) is pumped

through a 3-inch internal diameter circular pipe at a steady rate of 500
gallons per minute. The average velocity of flow through the pipe is most
nearly:

Answer # 1

A) 15.4 ft/s
B) 27.7 ft/s
C) 22.69 ft/s
D) 11.8 ft/s

Hydraulics and hydrology
Pressure conduit

Question #5: Water (density 62.4 lbs/ft3) is pumped at a steady flow rate through a
12 force main with an approximate head loss of 0.02 feet per linear foot of pipe. At the
beginning of a straight 800-foot horizontal pipe run from Point A to Point B, the gage
pressure is measured to be 45 pounds per square inch (PSI). The pressure reading taken
at Point B is most nearly:

Answer # 5

A) 33 PSI
B) 37 PSI
C) 45 PSI
D) 49 PSI
