DATE:

BALL MILL(Open circuit and closed circuit)

AIM:

To determine the new surface area generated by grinding the same feed in ball mill
while operating them in open circuit & closed circuit method for the same number of balls
and same duration.

APPARATUS REQUIRED:

Ball mill, Sieve shaker ,Weighing balance, stop watch etc

THEORY :

When the particles are broken into pieces of satisfactorily size and when no attempt is
made for further reduction then the operation is said to be open circuit. Operation this may
require excessive amount of power for much energy is wasted in regrinding particles that are
already fine enough. If the 50 mesh product is desired it is obviously wasteful to continue
grinding 100 or 200 mesh material. Thus it is often economical to remove partially ground
material from the mill and pass it through a size separation device. The under size becomes
the product and the oversize is returned to be reground. The separation device is sometimes
inside the mill as in ultrafine grinders or as it more common it is outside the mill .Closed
circuit operation is termed applied to the action of a mill & separator connected so that the
oversize particles are returned to the mill.

PROCEDURE

Open circuit

Take 0.5 kg of given feed material after determining average diameter feed it in a ball
mill. Start it & run for 10 min. After 10 min stop the ball mill. Take the product & sieve it for
5 minutes in a sieve shaker. Find weight of the material retained in each mesh and find the
product size by differential analysis. Note down the time required for 10 impulses in energy
meter under load and no load conditions.

Closed circuit

Take 0.5 Kg of feed material. After determine its average diameter feed it in ball mill.
Start the mill & operate it for 5 minutes. Take the product out and sieve it into two portions
using 52mesh. Take the overflow and again crush it for 5 min. Then take the product and
mixed with the under flow and fine the final product size by differential analysis. Note down
the time required for 10 impulses in energy meter under load and no load conditions.
