Followers of Jesus, like everyone else, used water for more than drinking. They used it, too, to wash and
to make things clean.
Jesus means the use of water in Baptism to remind people also of how Baptism cleanses from original sin
so that God can help them to love and do good.
Prior Knowledge
In Year Two, students saw how Jesus wanted water to be used in the Baptism ceremony. To his followers,
water was associated with life and refreshment in a country that contained many desert areas. They also
learned of receiving the life of God by focusing on the life-giving property of water.
In Year Three, students saw how water draws people together. Pools and rivers also draw together birds,
animals and many other creatures. It is water that sustains life. Also in Year Three, the students learned
that people become members of Gods family, the Church, through Baptism
Extension Students will have an opportunity to explore the Godly Play on the mat, quietly while
everyone else is drawing.
Engagement Students will have assistance from the Educational Assistant for the ideas and the drawing
of the picture during reflection time.
Special Considerations Students with dyslexia, have the prayer printed and on coloured card to assist
in the reading of the prayer. Student with autism, will be removed from reflection time to wet area to
complete if disturbing the rest of the class.
Students will create a class bulletin board that illustrates the question: What do people use water to wash
clean today?
Participate in class discussions/reflections about the Godly Play demonstration.
Visual art creations will be displayed in the classroom.
Anecdotal notes will be taken.
LESSON PROCEDURE - STEP A - Wondering at the Creator
Lesson Objectives state how the students will demonstrate their understanding of the learning point and the
skills they will use in doing this
1. Discuss the main and important elements of the Godly Play, The Baptism of Jesus through the wonder
questions as a class.
2. Create an art piece to be displayed in the classroom with the incorporation of water and baptism.
3. Work cooperatively in groups of 2-3 to come up with answers to the questions: What do people use water
to wash clean today?
English: Wonder Questions (ACELY1676) Brainstorm/Group work: take turns and spilt up people
that are a high possibility to misbehave.
Quiet time for prayer: self-reflection
Mat time: in a circle, have their own placemat to ensure
that are not disturbing anyone else.
6. Teacher will allocate students into groups of 2-3. Each group will

7. In their groups, students will need to write down as many ideas
as they can in 3-4 minutes.
8. One student from each group will come to the front to explain Blue tack
and place their words on the board around the question.

15 mins 1. The teacher gather students to the mat to demonstrate the story Godly Play Kit- The
of The Baptism of Jesus (Matthew 3:13-17) using the Godly Baptism of Jesus
Play teaching method.
3. Students will have some time to reflect on the Godly Play and
are able to discuss some of their thoughts and feelings with the
class if they would like to.
5. Students will head back to their desks. Students will spend some
time reflecting on the Godly Play. Ask students to draw Drawing Materials, A4
themselves being Baptised and make sure water is somehow blank paper
incorporated.
Conclusion
5 mins
1. Students will participate in a Cleansing Prayer. During silent Bucket, water, tea
reflection, each student will go forward to the front of the room towel, table, candle
where the teacher will pour water over the students hands to
clean them.
Faith: In this lesson, faith is explored through identifying and carrying out specific Catholic Church
practices, for example, the sign of the cross and Baptism.
