Harry Potter Side Event

Round 1
Tossups

1. It stands on a cliff overlooking the lake to its south, and a hole in that cliff covered
with ivy takes one by water directly beneath here. If Muggles approach it they
only see a crumbling ruin with a sign that says danger, do not enter, unsafe. The
largest single staff of house-elves in Britain is found here. The oak front doors
here can apparently be taught to recognize people. Pedestrians here need to
beware of solid walls pretending to be doors, staircases that lead somewhere
different on a Friday, and a notorious trick step that you sink into. For ten points,
name this school for witches and wizards of the British Isles.

ANSWER: Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

2. During the Death Eaters control over Hogwarts this character was nearly arrested
for throwing a Support Harry Potter party. During the summer of 1995 he
served as an emissary to the chieftain Karkus. He was the one who brought the
infant Harry to his aunt and uncles. His wand was snapped after his expulsion
from Hogwarts, and he keeps the shards of it inside his pink umbrella. In 1996 he
met his half-brother, a giant who was picked on for being a runt. Over the years
he has raised a number of interesting creatures that any sane person would find
terrifying. For ten points, name this gamekeeper of Hogwarts.

ANSWER: Rubeus Hagrid (accept either underlined name)

3. This object is at least a thousand years old. It was formerly a possession of Godric
Gryffindor, and another possession of his can be withdrawn from it. Nearly
Headless Nick has heard it give several warnings in the past, each time advising
that the people of Hogwarts stand together and be strong from within. During
the school year it presumably composes the song it will sing at the next years
welcome feast. Its origin lies in the founding of Hogwarts, when the founders
endowed it with intelligence. Its role is to decide what House incoming Hogwarts
students will be in. For ten points, name this talking piece of magical headwear.

ANSWER: the Sorting Hat

4. Harry and his classmates were instructed in it by Wilkie Twycross, who quickly
earned the ire of his students by focusing overmuch on the three Ds of this.
Harry likes its sensation to being forced through a very tight rubber tube. Since
one has to be of age and receive a license after taking a test to legally do this, the
side-along variety of it can be performed with minors. If this is done incorrectly,
splinching can result. To do it, a wizard concentrates on their destination and
then turns on the spot. For ten points, name this wizarding ability to teleport that
one cannot do within the Hogwarts grounds.

ANSWER: Apparition or Disapparition (accept word forms)

5. The earliest depiction of them is in a German illuminated manuscript from the

Tenth Century, in which three warlocks are pictured in great discomfort alongside
one of these objects. Early in their history they were roughly made and only
basically enchanted. More sophisticated enchantments began in 1901 when the
first racing model was produced. In 1935 Jocunda Sykes became the first
person to cross the Atlantic Ocean using one of these. For ten points, name this
preferred flying transport of European wizards.

ANSWER: broomstick

6. This character claims to have a scar above their left knee shaped like a map of the
London Underground. He is named in part for his father, who was sent to prison
after attacking a group of Muggles in their village. That attack was actually in
retaliation for those Muggles attack on this characters younger sister. Before
that sisters death he had written articles on alchemy and Transfiguration, but
afterward he cancelled plans to travel the world with his friend and returned
home to become head of the family. His first teaching post was as the
Transfiguration Professor at Hogwarts. For ten points, name this Headmaster of
Hogwarts and mentor of Harry.

ANSWER: Professor Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore (prompt on

Dumbledore)

7. A 1612 goblin rebellion was centered here. It contains the only Wizarding post
office that we have seen, where tiny Scops owls are available for use in local
deliveries only. Fred and George considered opening another Weasleys Wizard
Wheezes here after the closing of the original joke shop here. Harry was at first
denied entry here because the Dursleys had not signed the necessary paperwork,
but was allowed to start going after receiving permission from his godfather. For
ten points, name this only entirely magical village in Great Britain that Hogwarts
students can visit on certain weekends starting in their third year.

ANSWER: Hogsmeade
8. It disappeared from historical record for about a hundred years before being
described in a letter by Godowin Kneen to his cousin in Norway. The first
observations of it were conducted in the 11th Century by the witch Gertie Keddle,
who only knew the name of one day of the week. By the time Kneen wrote to his
cousin this had spread across Britain, made use of barrels rather than trees, and
included men with clubs. For ten points, name this activity named after the
marsh it was first played in, the most popular sport of the Wizarding World.

ANSWER: Quidditch

9. During the Second War, this character was believed to be responsible for the
death of Amelia Bones. His wand is made of yew with a Phoenix feather core.
Growing up, he was raised in part by a matron named Mrs. Cole, who grew
increasingly concerned as nasty incidents of his bullying and stealing among the
other children at the orphanage were suspected. While at Hogwarts he learned
that his father was not a wizard, and so he fashioned a new name for himself. The
majority of the Wizarding World now prefers not to speak that name. For ten
points, name this now-deceased Dark Lord in the Wizarding World.

ANSWER: Lord Voldemort or Tom Marvolo Riddle (for his real name, prompt
on a partial answer)

10. Its original owner was said to be a proud man who requested it as a reward from
someone whom he wished to humiliate. The last one to possess this object
dropped it in a forest in the hope that it would never be found. Voldemort
obtained it while still at Hogwarts, but would later hide it in the same place that
he obtained it. That place was the house of the last living descendents of Cadmus
Peverell. Albus Dumbledore recovered this object and destroyed it at great cost:
the curse upon it was to kill him within a year, and permanently injured his hand.
For ten points, name this Deathly Hallow that can conjure an apparition of the
dead.

ANSWER: the Resurrection Stone (accept something like the Gaunts ring, but
prompt on just ring and hopefully theyll mention the Gaunts)

11. After returning from their Horcrux recovery mission, Harry and Dumbledore
went to the top of the Astronomy Tower because one of these was above it. The
first time harry saw it was during the riot at the wizard campground. It is
conjured with the spell Morsmordre. Hermione says she modeled the method of
communication used by Dumbledores Army on this. It often appeared over the
houses of those murdered during the First War, and every Death Eater has it
branded onto their arm. Using this, they can summon Voldemort or vice-versa.
Its design is that of a skull with a snake coming out of its mouth. For ten points,
what is this symbol of Voldemort?

ANSWER: the Dark Mark

12. Obscurus Books, the publishers of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and
Whizz Hard Books, the publishers of Quidditch Through the Ages, are both
located here. Mundungus Fletcher was threatened with arrest for peddling here
unlicensed in 1997. Percy Weasley finds a book called Prefects Who Gained
Power in the secondhand store here, Florean Fortescue runs an ice cream parlor
here, and Gambol & Japes was a favorite joke shop of the Weasley twins here
before they became its competitors, setting up their own shop here. For ten
points, name this London shopping district of the Wizarding World.

ANSWER: Diagon Alley

13. Her middle name is revealed to be Jean. Her Patronus is an otter. Her parents
went by Wendell and Monica Wilkins during the Second War when she relocated
them to Australia and erased their memories. To her, the Amortentia love potion
smells like freshly mown grass and new parchment. Another characters plan
to evacuate the House-Elves from Hogwarts during the final battle there earns
him a kiss from her. Her pet is a cat no one else wanted because it has an ugly
face. She discovered that the Basilisk was moving through the Hogwarts
plumbing in her second year. For ten points, name this brainiac friend of Harry
Potter.

ANSWER: Hermione Granger (accept either underlined name)

14. Any attempt to improperly access this results in a barrage of insults being
directed at whoever tried. It was kept in a filing cabinet labeled Confiscated and
Dangerous for many years before being removed by the Weasley twins. The
fake Moody also borrowed it at one point. Tiny labeled figures move about it. Its
authors signed it with their nicknames rather than their actual names. It is
rendered blank with the words Mischief managed and activated with the words
I solemnly swear that I am up to no good. For ten points, name this piece of
parchment that depicts Hogwarts castle and its inhabitants.

ANSWER: the Marauders Map

15. The impostor Moody kept one in the second compartment of his magical trunk,
and members of the Order of the Phoenix had at least one for use in guarding the
Department of Mysteries. It can be made from Demiguise hair, but loses its
effectiveness with time. The most famous one we know of is different: according
to The Tales of Beedle the Bard, Death himself possessed it before yielding it to
the youngest Peverell brother. It was an anonymous Christmas present from
Dumbledore to Harry during the latters first Christmas at Hogwarts. For ten
points, name this garment used by Harry Potter and friends to conceal
themselves.

ANSWER: Invisibility Cloak or Cloak of Invisibility (accept obvious

equivalents; prompt on cloak)
16. This character was the first to suggest what the heirloom of Ravenclaws that
Voldemort had made into a Horcrux could be. She is first encountered in the
series attempting to learn a spell to turn an enemys ears into kumquats. While
serving as Quidditch commentator she talked more about oddly shaped clouds
than the game. Having witnessed the death of her mother due to an
experimental charm gone wrong, she can see Thestrals. She takes a great
interest in Crumple-Horned Snorkacks, and because of her idiosyncrasies she is
the butt of jokes and pranks. For ten points, name this Ravenclaw student a year
younger than Harry who is nicknamed Loony.

ANSWER: Luna Lovegood (prompt on Lovegood or Loony before mentioned)

17. Its tenth level cannot be reached by the lift; instead, one must take a flight of
stairs down from Level Nine. Enchanted windows here provide a view
determined by magical Maintenance. Employees open stall doors with a special
golden coin before flushing themselves down a toilet to enter here, while visitors
dial 6-2-4-4-2 in a broken phone booth. The visitor then has their wand weighed
by Eric the watchwizard. A group of statues depicting a wizard, witch, centaur,
goblin, and house-elf stand in the Fountain of Magical Brethren in its Atrium. For
ten points, name this site of operations for Britains magical government.

ANSWER: Ministry of Magic Headquarters (accept obvious equivalents; prompt

on Ministry of Magic)

18. This characters father works for the Department for the Regulation and Control
of Magical Creatures. He is described as having grey eyes. His wand is made of
ash with a core of unicorn tail hair. Contrary to popular accounts, he was not
actually murdered by Lord Voldemort. Professor Dumbledore asked that when
you have to make a choice between what is right and what is easy, to remember
this boy who was good, and kind, and brave when he delivered this characters
eulogy. For ten points, name this student from Hufflepuff who was killed by
Wormtail following his successful completion of the 1994 Triwizard
Tournament.

ANSWER: Cedric Diggory (prompt on Diggory)

19. In the Atrium of the Ministry of Magic, one of these has large golden symbols
running across it like some enormous blackboard. That one appears peacock
blue during the morning and dark blue in the evening. The one in the Great Hall
of Hogwarts has rained things like confetti on Valentines Day and warm dry
snow during Christmas dinner, but the rest of the time it shows things like red
and gold sunrises, pewter grey clouds, and lightning, since it depicts the weather
occurring in the sky outside. For ten points, identify these bewitched tops of
rooms that are a little more exciting to look at than normal ones.

ANSWER: enchanted ceilings

20. Though this creature is given a classification of five Xs, it is not, in fact entirely
untrainable. This creature was first bred in Greece by Herpo the Foul after a
great deal of experimentation and lived for 900 years. Adults are bright green in
color and males have a scarlet plume on their head. Breeding of this creature has
been illegal since the Middle Ages, but is unfortunately easily done by hatching a
chickens egg under a toad. The crowing of a rooster is fatal to one of these
creatures. For ten points, name this King of Serpents whose gaze and venom
are both fatal.

ANSWER: Basilisk

TB. At the end of her sixth year this character begins dating Michael Corner. She
claims to have been a fan of the Tutshill Tornadoes since she was six year old.
During the Second Task of the 1994 Triwizard Tournament she was the first
hostage to be rescued. She is first seen in the series during a Quidditch match
between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw, for whom she played Seeker. Her only date
with Harry was spent at Madam Puddifoots coffee shop on Valentines Day, but it
ended badly when the subject of her late ex-boyfriend, Cedric Diggory, arose. For
ten points, name this first crush and then girlfriend of Harry Potter.

ANSWER: Cho Chang (accept either underlined name)

EX. His most famous book is required of first-year Hogwarts students, though they
cant begin studying its topic until their third year. In 1979 he was awarded the
Order of Merlin, Second Class, for his work in that topic. His interest in the
subject was probably sparked by his mothers career as a Hippogriff breeder, and
after graduating Hogwarts he worked for the Department for the Regulation and
Control of Magical Creatures in several capacities. For ten points, name this
author of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

ANSWER: Newton Newt Artemis Scamander (accept any underlined name)
