EUPHORIC DESIGN

"the sense of ease and well-being"

The Scenario:

Industrial Design Department,

Euphoric design derives from a word: Euphoria - is an affective state in
Faculty of Art & Design, which a person experiences pleasure or excitement and intense feelings
Universiti Teknologi MARA. of well-being and happiness, in this context, it refers to the interaction
between user and design/product around them.
Code/Course:
IDE500
(Industrial Design III) Euphoric design is a new genre of design philosophy where emotions
and state of mind have been an important emphasize in product usage
Semester: and user interaction.
03 (Sept 2017 - Jan 2018)

Credit Unit: Euphoric design element is well-defined with:

3 (5 contact hours) Pleasure & ergonomic
Fun & exciting
Pre-requisite:
Non Support in well-being
Motivating
Synopsis:
This course aims to prepare Stimulating senses (haptic)
students for developing their Conveyed positive reaction
understanding in Product Research
and Development. This course will Naturalistic
give students capability to apply
their knowledge in suitable
Research Methodology to The Task:
understand the needs of user in
terms of product performance, Students are to mediate the understanding and perception of Euphoric
usability,context manufacture and
design and relate this to the object that they create. Students are
aesthetic (semantic value).
Information that gathered from the expected to explore the ways in which they can deftly the wide range of

The Sample:
Observing users behavior at their
working desk/ environment.
Exp : Designers office

Identify their needs and related

products that can help them
performing their task/routine.
Exp: Taking nap / quick nesting

Analyze those data and propose new

solution that encounter the theme
project of Euphoric design that can
relish "the sense of ease and well-
being".
Exp : Afternoon Nap Pod
In Japan, more and more companies
are encouraging employees to take a
nap on the job (during break hour),
convinced that it leads to better work
performance.

The Design Project Procedure:

1. RESEARCH:
Students are required to work in Group on literature search in order to understand the definition and
meaning of Euphoric/Euphoria in design.
Students are required to do literature search on current design context on profession and do existing
product design analysis (EPA) on Desktop Accessories/items.
Students are required to do analysis on the collected data from EPA, and identify design opportunity.
Propose new concept solution based on the theme & context given as to further develop design and
describe approach r methods to explore the design situation.

2. CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT:
Students are required to generate idea through concept sketches.
(Note: Number of design concept s depending on lecturer(s) in-charge).
Develop Mock-ups are required - (using appropriate materials to assess the proposed concepts) to
explore and develop design quality for Final.
Students must provide initial plan for Final model making procedure using either one of these
methods:
a) Laser Cut or b) Rapid Prototyping (depends on the design & technical suitability)

3. VISUAL PRESENTATION:
Breadboard or presentation panel is a must as to convey the intended solution and design concept.
(Note: Size of the panel, depending on lecturer(s) in-charge).
High Fidelity Model/Working Prototype (made using only Laser Cut or Rapid Prototyping )
Technical drawings.

4. DESIGN PORTFOLIO & CREATIVE REPORT ( Research and Design Development)
