ANALYSIS & DESIGN OF FRAME USING STAAD.Pro

AIM

Analyze and design the frame using STAAD.pro

INTRODUCTION

STADD.Pro is a structural analysis and design computer program originally developed

by Research Engineers International in Yorba Linda CA .The commercial version
STAAD.Pro is one of the most widely used structural analysis and design software. It
support several steel, concrete and timber design codes. It can make use of various forms
of analysis like 1st order static analysis, 2nd order P- delta analysis, and Geometric non
linear or buckling analysis.

PROCEDURE

1 Starting the program

a) Select STAAD.Pro icon from the desktop.
b) The STAAD.Pro graphical environment will be invoked and the following
screen comes up as shown in Figure 2.1.

MANUAL VERIFICATION OF ANALYSIS AND DESIGN

Solving the frame using unit load method:

The horizontal force at A is considered as redundant.

origin limits M m Mm

Segment

AB A 0 to 6 0 x 0
CE C 0 to 3 50x 2x/3 100x2/3
ED C 3 to 6 50x-60(x-3) 2x/3 (360x-20x2)/3
50x-60(x-3)-

DB C 6 to 9 30(x- 2x/3 (720x-80x2)/3

6)
EIA = 100X2/3 dx + (360x-20x2)/3 dx + (720x-80x2)/3

= 2340 kNm3

Segment origin limits M m Mm

AB A 0 to 6 X x X3
BC C 0 to 9 2x/3 2x/3 4x2/9
EIaa = x2 dx + 4x2/9 dx

= 180 kNm3

HA = - A /aa

= - 2340/180

= -13kN

By statics:

The support reactions:

HC = 13kN

VA = 48.55kN

VC = 41.45kN

The bending moments:

MA = 0 kNm

MB = 77.98 kNm

MC = 0 kNm

MMAX = 124.01 kNm

DESIGN OF BEAM

b=300 mm; D = 500; d=450

Mmax= 124.01kNm

Mu /bd2 = 124.01 x 106 / 300 x 4502 =2.041

M20 , Fe415

From table 2 of SP16

Pt = .622

Ast = Ptbd /100 =.622 x 300 x 450 / (100) =839.7 mm2

Provide 5 no.s 16 mm dia. Bars

Mur = .87 fy Ast (d-fy Ast/fck b )

Mur = .87 x 415 x1005.3 ( 450 415 x1005.3/20 x 300 ) =138.09 kNm

Mur .> Mu

So the design is correct .

DESIGN OF COLUMN

Size of the column =300 mm x 500 mm , l =6000 mm

lx = ly =6000 mm Dy = 300 mm Dx = 500 mm

lex = ley = 1 (From IS 456 2000 table 28)

( lex / Dx) = 12 & ( ley/ Dy) = 20 > 12 Slender column .

Pu = 48.612kN

Mux = 77.512 kNm at top and 0 kNm at bottom (From the analysis )

Eccentricity as per IS 456 2000

ex= (lx/500 + Dx /30) =28.67 ey = (lx/500 + Dy /30)=22

Minimum moment due to eccentricity = Pu x ex

Muxmin =1.36 kNm Muymin =1.069 kNm

Primary moment of design ( assuming single curvature)

Mux= 77.512kNm

Additional moment
Max = ( lex / Dx)2/2000 x Dx x Pu

Max= (12)2/2000 x500 x .5 x 48.612 =1.75kNm

May=(20)2/2000x300 x .5x48.612=2.91 kNm

Design moment

Mux = Max+ Mux = 77.512+1.75 =79.262 kNm

Muy = May+ Muy =2.91+0 = 2.91 kNm

Factored design moment

M =1.5 ( Mux+ Muy )

M =1.5 ( 79.262+ 2.91) =123.258kNm

Mu/fck bd2 = 123.258x106 /20x300x5002 =0.08

Pu / fck bd = 48.612x103/20x300x500 =0.016

d/D = 30/500 =.06

From chart 43 SP16

p/fck = 0.041

p= 0.82

So Ast provided =(.82x300x500)/100 =1230 mm2

Provide 8 no.s of 14 mm dia. Bars .
