Degrees of Comparison

There are 3 degrees of comparison: positive degree, comparative degree and


superlative degree.

Positive Comparative Superlative


nice nicer (the) nicest
beautiful more beautiful (the) most beautiful

1. POZITIVE DEGREE: cnd vorbim doar despre o persoan sau un lucru.


Eg: The house is big.

2. COMPARATIVE DEGREE: cnd comparm dou sau mai multe persoane / lucruri.
Eg: My house is bigger than his.

3. SUPERLATIVE DEGREE: cel mai mare grad de comparaie.


Eg: My house is the biggest.

RULES
I. Adjectivele formate din 1 silab adaug la final -ER sau -EST.
Adjectivele formate din 1 silab terminate in E adaug la final -R sau -ST.
Unele adjective dubleaz consoana finala.

Nicer nicer nicest
Big bigger biggest

II. Unele adjective formate din 2 silabe adaug -ER sau -EST.
Dac adjectivul se termin in Y, acesta se transform n I -> -IER, -IEST.
Adjectivele terminate n -FUL, -LESS, -ING, -ED formeaz gradele de comparaie cu
MORE i MOST
Unele adjective formate din 2 silabe primesc MORE sau MOST (modern, normal,
famous, correct)

III. Adjectivele formate din 3 sau mai multe silabe primesc MORE sau MOST.
