Solace Research Outline

A. Introduction
a. Problem:
i. Everyone struggles but not everyone knows where to go to find help.
ii. Mental issues are occurring in today's adolescents and young adults that
can cause mental, emotional and physical health problems.
iii. Another problem that affects our society is the unwillingness to
communicate or confide in others.
b. Solution:
i. OurVoice Co. will create Solace, a communications app directed towards
struggling young adults.
ii. Through the various tools that our app will offer will benefit many and be
an easier way to get help.
c. Mission Statement:
i. Our app Solace will act as that middle ground for open communication
with the added benefit of anonymity.
ii. Through music, spoken words, books, videos and more, people can seek
the encouragement that they need to get through the day.
B. Historical Perspectives
a. Looked at seven case studies with people who suffered from depression late in
their lives.
i. They found that they lagged far behind in developing a more effective
clinical trial to help elderly people through this illness.
b. Historically, it was thought that depression majorly affected only adults. This
study tested depression on teens
i. It was found that depression is the result of not one thing but many things
such as genetics, biologic, and environmental factors.
ii. The results showed that 10 to 15% of adolescents and young adults are
affected with depression.
c. Tested 10,369 Australian women in distinct age groups, ranging from ages 18-74,
to see if there was any correlation in social support and mental health.
i. Found that organizations or activities that aid in development and/or
promotion of better social support enhances the futures, well-beings, and
unions of people.
d. Relationship between the dosage of an antidepressant and the risk of deliberate
self harm in different age groups.
It was found that the rate of deliberate self harm was twice as high in
i.
youth ages 10 to 24 who were taking a high dosage of antidepressants
compared to the adults from ages 25 to 64.
C. Current Perspectives
a. Study done on students to see how social support affects self-esteem, depression
and happiness.
i. Direct association found between the three
1. Higher social support increased self-esteem and decreased
depression
ii. Increase in social support aided in the creation of positive mindsets in
students, better health, and more happiness.
b. Study done to see if yoga techniques help alleviate symptoms of depression,
employing breathing, meditation, and other techniques.
i. Found significant decrease in symptoms of depression and anxiety within
participants, as well as less fatigue and negative attitudes.
c. For many years, art and music have been used as a form of therapy as it allows
self-expression.
i. Music can help depression in two ways.
1. When listening to music, the brain is stimulated. This action may
provide emotional healing and positive self-image, distract from
physical pain, and help people cope with numerous ailments.
2. The action of playing an instrument also stimulates the brain by
allowing one to gain a form of physical exercise, getting them
moving and focusing their mind on the music rather than the stress,
anxiety, depression, or pain.
ii. Art is another form of self-expression, allowing one to silently vent. This
action also has positive brain-stimulating effects.
d. Experts are struggling with how to help the increasing amounts of depressed,
anxious, and overwhelmed teenagers.
i. Many depressed or anxious teens expressed a desire for their parents to
have known how to help them.
ii. Parents can help children in such situations by talking about serious
matters, paying a healthy amount of attention to them, resisting feelings of
anger, and seeking immediate help for their child.
iii. Family participation in the process is vital.
e. Four forms of therapy are assessed in terms of similarities, differences, and
effectiveness.
i. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
(CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Mode
Deactivation Therapy (MDT) have all been proven to show an increase in
positive changes in adolescents as well as a decrease in treatment
resistance.
ii. When some of these therapies are combined, they may impact adolescents
by turning negative coping methods positive, denial to acceptance, and
aggression into open-mindedness.
D. Potential Impacts
a. Health and Safety
i. A variety of different forms of interventions have shown a significant
decrease in depressive symptoms.
ii. Having a support system has shown effectiveness on adolescents as well
as adults.
iii. Many forms of internet abuse lead to many risks, but public
communication outweighs them.
b. Education
i. Suicide prevention and behavior programs are most effective in increasing
students self-efficacy, self-help, and help-seeking behaviors.
ii. People become reluctant to talk about mental illnesses because they are
naive on the topic or they are fearful of what they do not know.
iii. More programs should be molded around promoting these factors and
teaching families the steps they can take that will help protect their child.
iv. Professionals may be reluctant to sharing their personal or having their
patients share personal information online due to lack of security.
c. Legal
i. Legal consent of publishing media that is not your own.
ii. Copyright laws
iii. Risk factors that increase the chances of suicide in teens like
cyberbullying
iv. The HIPAA Act
E. Conclusion:
a. Benefits:
i. Education:
1. Raise awareness for mental and emotional issues
2. Proper treatment of others with mental and emotional issues
3. Severity of mental and emotional issues
4. The impact of not raising awareness
5. Educating users on self-efficacy, self-help, and help-seeking
behaviors
ii. Health & Safety:
1. Solace serves the same purpose as a suicide prevention and
behavior program
2. Apps with internet intervention reduces mental health issues
3. Social support improves in the mental and physical states of users
with depression
iii. Legal:
1. Helps OurVoice Co. understand how to be a legal resource
b. Risks:
i. Education:
1. Difficult to advertise Solace to healthcare professionals due to
being considered an unreliable and unsecure to share personal
information.
ii. Health & Safety:
1. A potential risk of cyberbullying
iii. Legal:
1. Legal issues concerning copyright, legal consent, and proper
conduct of suicidal users
2. Although anonymous, anyone can see user posts, which involves
the HIPAA Act.
c. Solutions:
i. Education:
1. Users remain anonymous to prevent the request of personal
information
ii. Health & Safety:
1. Solace will have various methods and resources to help people
cope.
2. Solace will include music, videos, artwork, and other forms of
copyrighted media to encourage users.
3. OurVoice Co will keep an eye on users for suicidal behavior and
provide links to various hotlines.
4. Safety is more important than anonymity so those who express
suicidal behaviors will be identified and/or monitored.
iii. Legal:
iv. All laws will be obeyed and copyright protocol will be followed
v. Take the HIPAA Act in consideration during the development of
Solace
vi. OurVoice Co. will take the necessary precautions and procedures
