Citation

A "citation" is the way you tell your readers that certain material in your work came from another source. It
also gives your readers the information necessary to find that source again, including:

information about the author

the title of the work
the name and location of the company that published your copy of the source
the date your copy was published
the page numbers of the material you are borrowing

Why should I cite sources?

Giving credit to the original author by citing sources is the only way to use other people's work without
plagiarizing. But there are a number of other reasons to cite sources:

citations are extremely helpful to anyone who wants to find out more about your ideas and where
they came from
not all sources are good or right -- your own ideas may often be more accurate or interesting than
those of your sources. Proper citation will keep you from taking the rap for someone else's bad
ideas
citing sources shows the amount of research you've done
citing sources strengthens your work by lending outside support to your ideas

Doesn't citing make my work seem less original?

Not at all. On the contrary, citing sources actually helps your reader distinguish your ideas from those of
your sources. This will actually emphasize the originality of your own work.

When do I need to cite?

Whenever you borrow words or ideas, you need to acknowledge their source. The following situations
almost always require citation:

whenever you use quotes

whenever you paraphrase
whenever you use an idea that someone else has already expressed
whenever you make specific reference to the work of another
whenever someone else's work has been critical in developing your own ideas.

APA (American Psychological Association) Style originated in 1929, when a group of psychologists,
anthropologists, and business managers convened and sought to establish a simple set of procedures, or
style rules, that would codify the many components of scientific writing to increase the ease of reading
comprehension.

As with other editorial styles, APA Style consists of rules or guidelines that a publisher observes to ensure
clear and consistent presentation of written material. It concerns uniform use of such elements as
1|Page Citation Guide
selection of headings, tone, and length, punctuation and abbreviations, presentation of numbers and
statistics, construction of tables and figures, citation of references, and many other elements that are a
part of a manuscript. (Source: Official APA website)

In-text Citation with APA

The APA style calls for three kinds of information to be included in in-text citations. The author's last
nameand the work's date of publication must always appear, and these items must match exactly the
corresponding entry in the references list. The third kind of information, the page number, appears only in
a citation to a direct quotation.

in writing on language and literature. MLA style features brief parenthetical citations in the text keyed to

Chicago is a documentation syle that has been published by the Chicago University Press since 1906.
This citation style incorporates rules of grammar and punctuation common in American English. Typically,
Chicago style presents two basic documentation systems: (1) notes and bibliography and (2) author-date.
Choosing between the two often depends on subject matter and the nature of sources cited, as each
system is favored by different groups of scholars.

The notes and bibliography style is preferred by many in the humanities, including those in literature,
history, and the arts. This style presents bibliographic information in notes and, often, a bibliography.

Material Type Notes/Bibliography Style

The author-date style has long been used by those in the physical, natural, and social sciences. In this
system, sources are briefly cited in the text, usually in parentheses, by authors last name and date of
publication. The short citations are amplified in a list of references, where full bibliographic information is
provided.

What is IEEE Style?

The Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is a professional organization supporting
many branches of engineering, computer science, and information technology. In addition to publishing
journals, magazines, and conference proceedings, IEEE also makes many standards for a wide variety of
industries.

7|Page Citation Guide

IEEE citation style includes in-text citations, numbered in square brackets, which refer to the full citation
listed in the reference list at the end of the paper. The reference list is organized numerically, not
alphabetically. For examples, see the IEEE Editorial Style Manual.

The Basics:

In-text Citing It is not necessary to mention an author's name, pages used, or date of publication in the
in-text citation. Instead, refer to the source with a number in a square bracket, e.g. [1], that will then
correspond to the full citation in your reference list.

Place bracketed citations within the line of text, before any punctuation, with a space before the
first bracket.

Number your sources as you cite them in the paper. Once you have referred to a source and
given it a number, continue to use that number as you cite that source throughout the paper.

When citing multiple sources at once, the preferred method is to list each number separately, in
its own brackets, using a comma or dash bteween numbers, as such: [1], [3], [5] or [1] - [5].

The below examples are from Murdoch University's IEEE Style LibGuide.

Examples of in-text citations:

"...end of the line for my research [13]."

"This theory was first put forward in 1987 [1]."

"Scholtz [2] has argued that..."

"Several recent studies [3], [4], [15], [16] have suggested that...."

"For example, see [7]."

Creating a Reference List The Reference List appears at the end of your paper and provides the full
citations for all the references you have used. List all references numerically in the order they've been
cited within the paper, and include the bracketed number at the beginning of each reference.

Title your list as References either centered or aligned left at the top of the page.

Create a hanging indent for each reference with the bracketed numbers flush with the left side of
the page. The hanging indent highlights the numerical sequence of your references.

The author's name is listed as first initial, last name. Example: Adel Al Muhairy would be cited as
A. Al Muhairy (NOT Al Muhairy, Adel).

The title of an article is listed in quotation marks.

The title of a journal or book is listed in italics.
