The Lions Paw!

Year group: 1

Time of lesson:
8:15am 8:25am (in an actual class I would plan it for 9:15am- 9:25am after the students
arrive at school just for a quick 10-minute story time)

ACARA Content Descriptors:

Discuss how authors create characters using language and images (ACELT1581 -
Scootle )
Discuss characters and events in a range of literary texts and share personal responses
to these texts, making connections with students' own experiences (ACELT1582 -
Scootle )
Discuss features of plot, character and setting in different types of literature and
explore some features of characters in different texts (ACELT1584 - Scootle )

Lesson Objectives:
Students should recognise the meaning of the title of the book, and who the author is
Get students to understand and make connections between the authors text and the
illustrations
Get students to share experiences or ideas about the text

Planned Sequence of Learning events:

Introduce the picture book by saying something like Good morning year 1s, this is a
book that I used to read as a young child growing up! It is called the Lions Paw!

Giving the students a chance to look at the pictures after reading the title, I will ask
the class what they think the book might be about, if there are any clues etc.

I will then move on to asking the group of students if anybody can tell me who the
author of the book would be, if they answered correct, I would thank them for their
response (positive reinforcement). If they answered incorrect, I would again thank
them for giving it a go! And then ask another student to perhaps give it a try and
thank them for helping one another out.

Throughout the book, I will ask the students questions on each individual page about
what they can see eg; what animals are there, what colours are in the pictures, where
they think the animals might be from and what the weather might be like.

After finishing the book, I will conclude the lesson by asking the students what they
thought about the book, and if they would want to research some of the animals they
saw- as a new idea for another lesson or perhaps a free time activity (*Finding out
what the students may be interested in to help lesson planning in the future).
