The Calculationof Hydrodynamical Forces and

Moments acting on the Two Dimensional Body

According to the Grim's Theory

By Kinya TAMURA,*MembeT

Abstract

The hydrodynamicalforces in horizonaldirection and moments in ]ongitudinal

directionacting on the two dimensional body with Lewis form seetion are obtained

by Grim's theory in the case of swaying and rolling oscillation and in the case
restrained among waves. Resultsof numerieal calculations, i.e. virtual mass m",
damping amplitude ratio A, and their leversh,., h,t of swaying oscillation, virtual

moment of inertia I'',damping amplitude ratio A,E and their levershR. hH.t of rolling

oscillation and hydrodynamicalforcesa, RE and their leversh.., h.i of the

restrained body among waves, are given in tables and figures. These are compared

with the calculations by Tasai and with the experiments by Grim.

as Grim{4) condueted the caleulations of the hydyodynamical force$ in vertlcal

direction
in the c:ase of heaving motion and in the case of the restrained body
among transverse wuves.

Grim treated the velocity potential functionand the stream functionas complex

respectively, though usually the fermer is signjfied by the real part and the latter
'I"he
by the imaginary part. rcsults obtained by these calculations are given in
complex, the real part shows the forceor moment with same phase as te the motion
of thebody or waves and the imaginary part shows the force or moment with the

90 degreesphase iag. The theory is based on the assumptions of the idealflow and

the possiblityof lineartreatment. Since the complex potential function can be

expressed by a series of partialpotentialfunctionsthe. each of which satisfies the
condition of freesurface and the condiitien of discontinuity repectively, the velocity

potential functionof the fluidis obtained upproximately by adopting the firstfinite

terms of the partial potentia! series and by deciding the unknown coefficients Ai, - -'
, A,.,"i so as to satisfy the boundary cendition of the body.

The hydrodynamical forcesancl moments are given by integrationof thus

ol)tained ve]ocity potential along the surface of the body. In this report t]ie first
four terms are adopted,
The numerie.al calculations are earried out on the sections coverin/tT considerably

wide ranges such as the depth ,ratioa'2T==-0,

brea(lth 2 N2.2
and the sectional area

ratio reg=O,5ss-1.0.
The results are compared with the values calculated by Tasai{7) and also

with the experimental results which were carried out by Grim(3) in Hamburgisehe
Schiffbau Versuchsanstalt (H.S.V.A.).

g.1 Fundamentals of the theory

1. For the basis of the theory the assurnptions are made as follows:
1) Ideal flow
2) Linear treatment of the problem
3) Approximate treatment of the boundary condition of the profile

That means firstiythe discussions of this paper are limitedto the potential flow.
Secondly the amplitude of the motion is small enough compared to the dimensions

of the profile, therefore thc wave amplitude ec uring from the body or aeting on
the body is also very small. And lastly, for the boundary condition of the profile
the .c.trearnfunctionis expanded in series ana only the finitetcrms are satisfied.

These assumptions are quite ordinary ones and mostly used in the calculations of
'
this kind.
Beside these basic assumptions the higher order oi the frequeney v is also
negiected. The effeet of thi3 neglection of p is discussedlater,as itsinfluenceis

In the restrained conditien the stream funetionon the body surface becomes :

But the satisfaction of the boundary condition must be thought after adding the
streum function of waves to the original one.

The complex potentialfunctienof the transverse wave is given in the follewing

complex potential of waves can be dividedinto two parts, one is symmetric to the
Y- axis and another is asymmetric. The former contributes to the forces in vertical

directionand the latterto the forces in horizontaldirectionand to the moments in

longitudinaldirection.The latteris the author's case.

From eq, (32)it is noticeable that the firsttwo terms show formula as

the boundary condition of the swaying oscillation eq. (25).Therefore it will be

necssary to take at leastthree terms when the effect of waves is discussed.
Now treating the stream function due to waves as a kind of boundary condition

and considering that thc strearn function must be zero at y=tO, the following
formula is led from eq, (31).

Where xe means the value at y==O on the profile.
Refering eq, (2),(16)& (19),the coeffts. of simultaneous equations are given

g.6 Considerationsfor the motion among waves

1. When the body is moved among waves its motion can be estimated by the
results of the author's ealculation, provided the lineartreatment is aliowable. The
equation of the motion becomes the combined one of rolling and swaying.

the damping force or moment due to the swaying and rolling motion.

When the body is supported by some axis, the force and the moment acting

on the axis must be added to the K& M respectively and x!+x2 tends to g.l
where l is the length between the axis and the origin of the coordinate.

2. The experiments were carried out by Grim with the cylinder of the rectangler

section. The dimensionsof the cylinder were as follows:the breadth B O.41m,

the depth TL-O.11m and the length of the cylinder was 4.75m. It was set perpen-
dicularte the Smaller Towing Tanl{ of H, S. V. A. and had O.125m clearence to

the tank wall in both sides, sincc the breadth of the tank is 5m. The two dimens-

ional surface waves were produced by the plunger type wave maker and advanced

to the longitudinaldirection of the tank,

The cylinder was supported by horizontalaxis and the height of the axis was
changed at several length. The swaying motion of prohibited, but
this axis was
theheaving motion was leftfree. The wave length was ehangedi between 1.7m and
6.5m, which corresponds to the wave period between 1.04 and 2.04sec, but max.
wave slope was kept always constant, i.e. 4.5 degrees, during the tests, Thus the
rolling angle gp in these forced oscillation was measured at the several heightsof
the axis.

The ca!cu}atien of the rolling angle in forcedoscillation corresponding to the

above experiments is started from eq. (52).

Add the horizontal force acting to the axis, D, to the right side of the first
equation and its moment to the origin, -Dl, to the right side of the second

Conclusion

The hydrodynamical forces in horizontaldirection

and moment in lengitudinal
directionacting on the two dimensionalbody with Lewis form section are calculated
in the case of swaying and rolling oscillation and in the case restrained among

waves.

The numerical calculations are carried out for so wide range as to cover the
cross sections of actual ships and their results are given in tables and in figures. It
is noticeable that the leverof the damping in swaying and rolling oscillation and

the lever oi imaginary part of the force in the case restrained

real and among waves

coincide with each other. The calculated results also coincide considerably to this
value given by Tasai.
The comparison is made with the experimental results which were carried out

by Grim in ll.S. V.A., but the coincidence is not so good, The differences
may
mostly come from the differenceof the bedy section and the neglection of viscosity,
especially as the bocly has sharp edged bilge.Further experiments will be desired
to find out the effect of viscosity on this phenornenon.

Aknowledgement

The author wishes to express his courteous thanks to Prof. Dr. O Grim, the
iormer vice-director of H. S. V.A., for his excellent instruction
and guidance. He
is also very grateful to Mr. W.Alef, the staff of ll.S. V.A., to the staff member

of the Universityof I'Iamburg and the Deutsche Forschung-gemeinschaft ashe could

have the occasion to use electro computor. Furthermore it was greatly due to the
encouragement given to the author by Dr, K. Taniguehi, the chiefe of Mitsubishi
Expt. Tanl<, that he pursued his works,
