religionoranyotherareaofourlife.Itisimportantthatleadershipplaysasignificantrolein
whetherwesucceedorfailasindividuals.Weoftenwonderwhatleadershipisorwhatbeinga
leaderisalabout,butthen,whatisthetrueunderstandingormeaningbehindthisconceptof
leadership?

Movingfromtheclassicaldefinitionswhichmostpeopleprofess,leadershipisa
phenomenonofanindividualtakingadvantageofeveryopportunitypresentedhimorherto
makeimpactineveryenvironmentheorshefindshimselforherselfwithoutcompromising
thecornerstoneofservice.Itisimportantforustolookatamoredetailedunderstandingof
themeaning.

Therearespecifickeywordsandaphrasewithinthedefinitionwhichmustbeunderstoodin

Youasanindividualneedtotakeadvantageofeveryopportunitythatcomesyourwayasan
entrepreneurinordertosucceed.Notonlydoyouneedtotakeadvantageofeveryopportunity
thatcomesyourwaybutthisopportunitiesthemselvesgiveyouthechancetomakeimpactand
influencethosearoundyou.Inasituationwhereyouareanentrepreneurinasmalcommunity,
wherethereisaseriousendemiccrisisofunemploymentandsocialvices,asanentrepreneur
yourealizethatyouhavebeenpresentedwithanopportunityanditistheendemiccrisesof
unemploymentandsocialvices.

Naturaly,asacreative,rationalandobjectivepersonyouwilhavetheurgetodosomething
abouttheproblem.Youhavetotakeadvantageoftheopportunitypresentedandinthis
specificexample,unemploymentandsocialvicesinyourcommunity.Youmustuse
everypotentialwithinyoutomakeadifferenceandthisistheaspectofleadershipwhereyou
asanindividualmakesanimpactineveryenvironmentyoufindyourselfin.Lookingatthe
scenarioagain,yourobjectivewilbethecreationofjobsforthepeoplewithinthecommunity.
So,theimpactyouaregoingtomakeisthecreationofjobswhichwouldhelpmitigatethelevel

Itishoweverimportantthatyourealizethatasaleaderandentrepreneuryoumustnot
compromisethecornerstoneofservice.Intheworldofbusinessthefundamental
principlewhichisthedrivenforcebehindalbusinessactivitiesisprofitandsadlymostoftenat
theexpenseofethicalprinciples.However,asaleaderyouexisttoserveothers,andthat
shouldbeyourmainfocus.Bylargeservicetothesocietyshouldbethemotivatingforce
behindyourleadershipexploits.

Goingbacktotheearlierexample,solvingsocialissuesshouldnotbecompromisedwiththe
desiretomakemoneyorgainfame.Thatiswhatleadershipisabout.

Politicsasadynamicforcebehindsocio-economicdevelopmentorprogressdependsonthe
leadersinvolvedintheprocess.Oneofthechalengesfacedaroundtheglobebymany
societiesasfarasgovernanceinthevariouscountriesisconcernediswhetherthose
leadingareactualyleaderstobeginwith.

Secondly,ifwewantleaderstoberaisedamongtheyoungergenerationandfinalyassuming
thatsomearemadeleaders,issuesofcompetenceanddeficitofleadershipskilsbecomea
materofgreatconcern.Thisthenclearlyisanindicationthat,notonlyisleadershipimportantin
thebusinessarenaasstatedearlierbuteveninthepoliticalsphere,wheregreatemphasisis
laidontheroleleadersplay.

Nowgoingbacktothemeaningofleadership,weknowthatleadershipisanindividualtaking
advantageofeveryopportunitypresentedtohimorhertomakeanimpactineveryenvironment
heorshefindshimselforherselfwithoutcompromisingthecornerstoneofservice,andwe
understandthatpoliticsactualyservesasoneofthemostconspicuousplatformswheremany
areabletoputtotesttheirleadershipskils.Howeverassumingyouareapolitician,youwilnot
beabletosucceedinyourendeavorsifyoudonotrecognizetheneedforleadershipinyour
politicalcareer.Letstakeitthat,youarethepresidentofacountrywhereyouarefacedwith
endemiccorruptionininstitutionsandthesocietyatlarge.Thequestionyouwilaskishow
leadershipwilactualyhelpinyourfightagainstcoruption.

Beingaleaderyouwilrecognizethephenomenonofcoruptioninyoursociety.Badasitmay
sound,itactualypresentsyouwithanopportunitytomakeameaningfulimpacttoinfluence
yourpeopleanddemonstratethattrulyaleaderexiststoservethoseheleads.Nowasaleader
youwilmakeapersonalcommitmenttofightcoruptionamongyourappointeesandalsotake
thesteptoensurethatyourlifestyleisverymodestandpositivelyexemplary.Thisisthetrue
spiritbehindbeingaleaderthatthepeopleneed.Aleaderwhotakesadvantageofevery
opportunitywhethergoodorbadtomakeanimpactineverysituationorenvironmenthefinds
himselforherselfwithoutcompromisingthecornerstoneofservice.

Intheareaofreligion,leadershipalsoplaysanimportantroleinwhetheryouwilsucceedasan
individualornotasfarasthisaspectofyourlifeisconcerned.Intheworldofreligionwhere
beliefsandpracticesareofabsoluteandgreatsymbolicimportance,leadershipplaysacrucial
roleinmeetingthemoralstandardssetbyourethicalstandards.WhetheryouareaMuslim,a
Christianorbelongtoanyotherreligiousideology,leadershipservesasanimportantprinciple
whichenablesyoutoadjustthependulumofmoralitytoastateofequilibrium.Letstakefor
example,inChristianitytheBiblecalsonalChristianstobefaithfulgiversandnotonly
faithfulgiversbuttogivespecificalytothepoorandneedy.NowthismoralcaltoalChristians
givesthemtheopportunitytomakeadifferenceandmakepositiveimpactintheworldwhere
povertyandinsatiableneedsareconstantchalenges.ItgivesyouaChristian,oraMuslimor
folowersofotherreligionsachancetomakeimpactandbetheleadersyouare.

Thevariousscenarioswelookedinrelationtoleadershipinbusiness,politicsandreligionare
anindicationofthepossibilitiesofhowfarleadershipcango.Thismeansthatleadership
canthriveinalaspectsoflifeandhelpyoutosucceedirespectiveofthedisciplines,sectors
ordispensationyoufindyourselfin.

Generalyspeaking,whenpeopletalkaboutleadershiporbeingaleaderwhatcomestothe
mindofmanypeopleisthatleadershipisaboutapersonwhomerelyleadsorisinaposition
ofimportance.Butbasedonourearlierunderstandingofleadership,leadershipthenismore
aboutimpactingandservingthoseyouseektoinfluence.Realizingthistruthwilnotonlyhelp
youtobeasuccessfulleaderbutwilcontributetoyourbeingsuccessfulinlife.

Youmayhavequestionsrunningthroughyourmindonwhethereveryonebroughtintotheworld
ismeanttobealeaderorifleadershipisthepreserveofonlytheelites.Thefactisthat
leadershipisneitherreservedforafewpeoplenorisitforelites.Everysinglehumanbeing

theyarenotabletounleashorunlockthatnaturalandhiddenleadershipskilembeddedin
them.Everymanorwomanisbornwiththegiftofleadershipandwildiewiththatgift.

Goingbacktotheunderstandingofleadershipestablishedatthebeginningofthebook,
conclusionscannotbereachedthatonlyafewselectednumberofpeopleareborntobeleaders
orbornwiththegiftofleadership.Everypersonhastheabilitytotakeadvantageofopportunities
lifeofferstomakeimpactandinfluencetheworldaroundhimorheranddoitwiththe
intentionsofservingtheinterestofthegoodofothers.

Itisequalyimportantthatwerealizethatleadershiporbeingaleaderisnotsomethingone
learnsasatrade.Youcannotlearnhowtobealeaderbecauseleadershiporbeingaleaderisa
giftyouarebornwithjustaseveryotherpersononearthanditalreadyresidesinyou.The
limitationsyoufacejustasmanyotherpeopleishowtounearththegiftandmakeuseofit.
Withthisknowledgeinmind,themysterybehindwhocanbealeaderhasbeensecurely demystified.

Inthis21stcentury,theworldisfacingimmeasurablenumberofchalenges.Alarounduswe
seecountriesfacingchalengesofwarandterorismwhileothersarebatlingpoverty,
diseaseoutbreaks,climatechangeandmanymoreissues.Therearejustunimaginablenumber
ofchalengesthatareconfrontingmankindandthreateningoursurvivalandtheexistenceofthe
world.Inthemidstofthesechalengesyouhavepeopleeithertryingtodiverttheiratentions
fromtheissuesattheirdoorstepsasawayofpretendingthattheproblemsdonotexistorin
anotherspectrayouhavepeopleworkingseriouslytofindsolutionstoproblemsfacingus.One
thingweoftenfailtodoistositdown,criticalythinkandaskourselvesifitispossiblethata
commongroundorsolutionexistswhichcanhelpindealingwithissuesfacingmankind.The
answertosuchaninquiryisYESthereisacommongroundorsolution.Leadershipisthekey,
theuniversalopiumtodealingwithalchalengesfacingus.Witheverypersononearthrealizing
thatheorsheisaleaderinonewayortheotherandthatheorshepossessesuniqueleadership
skils,thatwilbethefirststepmadebymankindtowardsputinganendtotheproblems bedevilingus.

Leadersareneededinorderdealtowithreligiousintolerance,povertyandfamine,climate
changeandaltheproblemswearestrugglingtosolve.Asstatedearlier,everypersonisborn
tobealeader,tobeaproblemsolverandtomakeameaningfulimpactineveryaspectoflife.
LeadershipisnotthepreserveofonlyChristiansorMuslimsoranyotherreligiouscreed.
Irespectiveofyoursocio-economicstatusyouareapotentialleader.Whetherrich,poororin
themiddleyouarealeaderandyouarebornwiththegiftofleadershipjustlikeeveryother
personwalkingonthesurfaceoftheearth.Leadershipisalsonotforonlyblacksorwhites
oranyspecialrace.Everymanwalkingonthisearthiseitheraleaderorapotentialleader.
Thosewhohaverealizedthetruththatnaturehasgiftedeverymanorwomanbornoneartha
giftofleadershipandhavethekeysneededtoexploitthegiftarethosewhoweoftensayare
leaders.Ontheotherhand,therearemanypeopleouttherewhoareunabletounlocktheirgift
ofleadership.Thereareuniversalprincipleswhicharekeysthatareneededtotapintotheinner
beinganddiscoverthegiftofleadership.Amongalthechalengesfacingusasmankind,
leadershipdeficitisandwilalwaysbethemostimportantobstaclethathindersourcolective
desireforautopianworld.Theutopianworldwhichwealwantisaworlddevoidofwar,famine,
diseases,povertyandmanyotherchalenges.

Harnessingthepotentialsofbeingaleadermustbeyourfocusanditmustbewhatyouwould
worktowardsinlifebecausesuccessinthatmissionoflifewilserveasanimpetusfora
dominoeffectwhichmeansalotherareasofyourlifewilexperiencepositiveresults.Thisbook

Therearecertainprinciplesorkeysthatnaturehasestablishedforeverymanwhowantsto
folowthepathofleadership.Ifyoudonotfolowtheseprinciplesitwouldbeimpossible
tounlockthegiftofleadershipwhichresidesinyou.Youasanindividualneedthegiftof
leadershipinordertosucceedinalareasoflife.Youaretheleaderandthosewhoyouseekto
influencearethefolowers.Thatdoesnotmeanthattherearesomewhoarebycircumstances
ofnaturealwaysfolowers.Everyindividualinhisorherexclusivecapacityisaleaderor
potentialeaderbutthefolowershipcomestoplaywhenyouasanindividualseektomake
positiveimpactonothers.Thoseatthetimeofyourinfluenceandwhowilbenefitfromyour
impactarethefolowers.

Aleadermustknowthatthereareprinciplesorkeysthatoneneedstofolowtobecomea
successfulleader.

Thefirstkeyorprincipleoneneedsinordertobecomeasuccessfulleaderishumility.
Whatdoeshumilitystandfor?Humilityiswhenyoudonotthinkoractasifyouarebeter
thanothers.

Tobeasuccessfulleaderinaldimensionsoflife,itisimperativethathumilitybecomestheair
youbreathe.Forwithouthumilityyouwilslowlysuffocateandfadeintoaperpetualprisonof failure.

Thereareafewpeoplewhothriveinaroganceandlackeventheslightesttraceofhumilityin
theirlivesbutsuchsuccessesareshortlivedandtheaftermathisnothingtowritehomeabout.
Asaleaderyoushouldseektoserveothersandmakeimpactaroundyou.Youmustseekthe
greatergoodandworktowardsapositiveresult.Suchaspirationsofanobleleadercannotsee
fruitionwithouthumility.

Humilityasahumantraitresidesinalofus.Somepeoplehavetheirhumblepersona
blossomingnaturalywhileothershavetheirssuppressedwiththesealofpride.However
achievinghumilityisalifelongprocess.Beingahumblepersondoeshaveapositiveinfluence
onleadership.Asaleader,thinkingoractinginamannerwhichmakesyourfolowersyour
coequalensuresthattheywilgiveyoutheirabsolutesupportandhelpyoutosucceed.

Letstakeforexamplethatyouareabusinessowner.Asabusinessleaderbeinghumblewil
motivateyouremployeestoworkforthesuccessofyourbusiness.Thisisbecauseyouremployees
wilfeelcomfortableandmotivatedknowingthattheirleaderisahumblepersonandthereforedoes
notconsiderhimselftobebeterthanthem.Suchrealizationontheirpartwilhelpfosteran
atmospherewheretheywildoabsolutelyanythingtoensurethatyoursuccessasaleaderis
guaranteed.Inpolitics,youasapoliticalleaderalsoneedhumilityinordertosucceed.Mostpolitical
elitesareseenasbeingarrogantandlackinghumilitybecauseoftheirexposuretopower.This
makesitdifficultifnotimpossibleforthemtosucceed.However,politicalleaderswhoexhibit
genuinetraitsofhumilityarethosewhosucceed.Oftentimesitisrecognizedthathumbleleadersin
politicsleaveundisputablelegacies.Thisisasaresultofthefactthattheirfolowersfinditeasyto
approachthem.Naturalyaspartofhumannature,peopletendtofeellessmotivatedwhenthose
leadingthemarenothumble.Peopledonotfeelcomfortableworkingforleaderswhodonot
recognizetheircontributions.Suchabehavioronthepartoftheleaderdamagestheself-esteem
ofthoseheinfluencesandthatwilneutralizeanysuccesstheleaderhopestoachieve.Onthe
otherhandyoubeingapoliticalleaderwhoknowstheimportanceofhumilitywilhelpyouto
achieveyourgoals.

Thepositiveauraofhumilityyouexhibittowardsyourfolowerswilmotivatethemtohelp
youtosucceed.Asaleaderyourmaingoalistoserveothers.Youarenottobeservedhence
aconsiderablelevelofhumilitymustbeinwhateveryoudobecauseleadershipisaprivilege.

Thisisthefirststeptowardsyoursuccessasaleader.Youwilfacemanychalengesthatwil
testthetruespiritbehindyourabilitytobeahumbleleader.Youwilbeexposedtocertain
privileges,resourcesandauthority.Thesetemptationsarepartandparcelofyou.Yourabilityto
remainhumbleevenwithalthesethingsmeansthatyoutrulyareahumbleleader.Thereare
leaderswhoeasilysuccumbtotemptationsasaresultofexposureofpower.Insuch
circumstancestherearetworeasonswhichaccountfortheleaderbecomingpridefuland arogant.

Thefirstreasonwouldbethattheleaderwasactualypretendingtobehumble.Suchaleader
findsitdifficultmovingfrombeingarroganttobeingahumbleleaderandthisleadsto
failure.Thesecondreasonwhyahumbleleaderbecomespridefulonceheisexposed
topowerisbecauseofhisorherinnerweaknesses.Suchaleaderdoesnothavedifficulty
reformingafterrealizingthatheorshehasfailed.Youasaleadermustthereforerecognize
yourweaknesseswhenitcomestohumility.

Nowasaleaderyoumaywonderifhumilityinitselfisasignofaweakness.Notthinkingor
actingasifyouarebeterthanotherscannotmakeyouaweakleader.Youareratherdrawing
yourstrengthfromthoseyouworkwith.Beinghumbleisfareasierandlessexhaustivethan
beingarogant.Aleaderwhohumbleshimselforherselfisabletoseewhereheorsheisgoing
andwhatgoesonaroundhimorher.However,aleaderwhoisfulofpridegetsblindedbydeceit.
Thatiswhyasaleaderyouneedhumilityinordertoseethingsclearlyandtobeabletomake
decisionsthatwilrepresentthewilofthoseyouserve.Itisimportanttoknowthatasa
leaderarroganceandprideatractmanyenemies.Leaderswhoarearogantandpridefulhave
manyfalsefriendsandsecretenemieswhoworktomakesuchleadersfail.Ontheotherhanda
leaderwhowalksthepathofhumilityatractsmanygenuinefriends.Suchleadersdonoteasily
offendthosetheylead.Intimesofdifficultyahumbleleaderwilhavemanypeoplehelping
himtostayafloatbutapridefulleaderwilsearchforhelptonoavail.

Itisimperativeasleadertoworktoclearalfalseperceptionsaboutyou.Humilityisshown
throughbothwordsandactions.Thereareskepticswhowilhavenegativeopinionsthat
yourhumilityissuperficial.Itisimportanttoworktodispelsuchperceptionsthrough
thewayyouspeakandact.

Perceptionscanbeverydangerousandasaleaderyoumustmakesurethatalfalse
perceptionsaredealtwithamicablyinordertoensurethatyousucceedasaleader.Everystep
youtakeasaleader,everywordyouspeak,everythingyoudomustbedonewithhumility.Being
humbledoesnotmeanthatchalengeswilnotcomeyourwaybuthumilitymakesitdifficultto
fail.Itgivesyouastheleaderasenseofsecurityandassurancebecausewithahumbleheart
thefuturebecomesverytransparent.
Makeeveryefforttofighteveryintimidatingtemptationtoshedofyourcloakofhumility.Atthe
endofyourserviceasaleader,youwiltakearetrospectiveassessmentofyourselfandrealize
thathumilitywastrulyakeytosuccessfulleadership.

experienceandknowledgethatyouhave.Anindividualsabilitytomakedecisionsthatare
rationalbasedonexperienceandknowledgeformsthecoreofwisdom.Tobeawise
leadermeansthatyouareabletogivegoodadvicebasedontheexperienceyouhave.Wisdomis
significantlyneededinleaderswhowanttosucceedinachievingtheirgoals.Aleaderis
expectedtomakedecisionsandthedecisionsareexpectedtoberational.Howeverwithout
experienceandknowledge,thedecisionsthataleadertakeswilendupleadingtofailure.

Letslookatascenariowhereyouareaneconomistandyouworkforthegovernmentofyour
country.Nowthecountryhaslimitedresourcesandtheproblemsthatneedtobesolved
