The islands of Western Visayas are home to some of the sweetest and most
cheerful people in the Philippines. The Ilonggos are also friendly and caring people, and
their bright and welcoming smiles can make anyone feel right at home. Ilonggos are very
particular about their food, and will only eat the absolute best.

Ilonggos enjoy a more laid-back lifestyle, where traffic is barely an issue.

Everyone knows one another and can often trace their own and each others family trees,
based on the stories and tales of grandparents.

Citizens of Iloilo love good company, good ambiance, and a good meal. For this
reason, their get-togethers usually last for hours, with dinners sometimes extending until
past midnight. They love to catch up with old friends and keep themselves updated, which
is easy when everyone knows everyone else. They enjoy naps in the afternoon
called siestas, and are devout, prayerful, and family-oriented.

With regard to handicrafts, the one that is considered the "queen", both in the past
and in the present, is weaving. For a while, during the late 18th century and early 19th
centuries, Iloilo was referred to as the "Textile Capital of the Philippines". Its woven
products made of pia fibers, cotton, silk and abaca were exported abroad, as well as to
Manila and other parts of Luzon and the Visayas. Iloilo is also known formulated its
pottery-making, bolo-making and bamboo crafts. During the Spanish period, it was well-
known as the center of boat-building in the Visayas, especially the town of Oton and the
island of Guimaras. In fact, according to Spanish record, there were galleons used by the
Spaniards built in these places.

On the other hand, Panay has its own variety of flavors inspired by many different
cultures. It is common for Ilonggos from Panay to serve Spanish-inspired dishes,
although the province is also known for its Chinese-influenced dishes.

Finally, all Ilonggos have a penchant for desserts, and those from Iloilo have a
whole roster of breads, pastries, and sweets that might confuse you at first at least
until you try them. There are bakeries on nearly every block in Iloilo, and they are stocked
full of biscocho, butterscotch, galletas, barquillos, and bibingka. One can also indulge in
Iloilos many types of kakanin ibos or suman, butong-butong, pulot, and the
famous bayi-bayi.

Ocean sediments can kill disease-causing superbugs Scientific Discovery

Research conducted by scientists and researchers from the University of San
Agustin in Iloilo City has discovere special types of microorganisms found in sediments
from the ocean floor that can kill aggressive disease-causing bugs or superbugs.
The research team, led by Doralyn Dalisay, a researcher of the Department of
Science and Technology-National Research Council of the Philippines(DOST-NRCP) and
a research scientist of the University of San Agustin, has put up a microbial library for
cultivation of the marine sediment-derived organisms and also an extract library of these
isolated microorganisms for antimicrobial testing.
Extracts from the library showed strong inhibitory activities against a panel of test
pathogenic drug-resistant bacteria and fungi.
The findings are quite promising and if more microorganisms like these will be
discovered and tested, this (endeavor) will place the Philippines in the global frontiers of
medical and therapeutic research, Dalisay said during the recent launching of the research
program titled Marine Sediment-Derived Actinobacteria: New Vista for Natural Products
Discovery in the Philippines in Iloilo City.
NRCP funded the research of Dalisays team from the university.
Superbugs is a new medical terminology that refers to bacteria that have
developed genes resistant to different antibiotics. The infections caused by these bacteria
are harder to treat.
