HOW IT CAN HURT YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE
The wrong message about your personal brand may limit
your networking opportunities.

What you post or tweet may affect your ability to get hired.

It could even get you fired. Examples include;

Disparaging one of your companys sponsors.
Posting comments about a client, patient or student.

HOW IT CAN HURT OTHERS-CASE 1

Jamey Rodemeyer
Jamey was a fourteen-year-old student who attended Williamsville High School (New York)
and often blogged about the bullying he endured for being bisexual. Anonymous posts on
Jameys social media pages included JAMIE IS STUPID, GAY, FAT AND (sic) UGLY. HE MUST
DIE! and I wouldnt care if you died. No one would. So just do it It would make
everyone WAY more Happier. Jameys parents were aware of the bullying but they did
not think it bothered Jamey. Jamey posted inspirational, anti-suicide messages on his
YouTube and social media pages, telling other victims of bullying to be strong.

Tragically, Jamey hanged himself on September 18, 2011, after years of continued bullying
and cyberbullying for his sexual orientation.

HOW IT CAN HURT OTHERS- CASE 2
Nafeesa Onque
Nafeesa Onques Facebook page included her cell phone number, favorite movies, relationship status,
photographs of herself, and photo albums. She was a popular teen cheerleader who was working
toward a Rutgers University scholarship. But someone else had built a profile and stolen Nafeesas online
identity and was using it to destroy her real-life identity. The bully started impersonating Nafeesa, using
several fake profiles to hold her online personality hostage until police tracked down the impostor.
Her mother worked to end the bullying, pleading with internet providers, school officials and the police but
every time the mother managed to get the page deleted, a new one would spring up within days.
The impostor sent friend requests to dozens of city teens and once they accepted they would become
flooded with threats, sexually explicit comments and profanity laced tirades. Over time, the cyberbullying
become more personal and disturbing. Detectives eventually discovered the name and hometown of their
suspect. Authorities confirmed the impersonator was a fifteen-year-old girl from Nafeesas hometown.
The juvenile was arrested and charged with wrongful impersonation.

ASK YOURSELF
Am I revealing too much?

If it gives you pause, pause.

Do I have the okay of my peers to post their information/pictures?

Am I adding value?

Perception is reality.

What is a meat puppet and why should I care?
