Technology Plan Introduction

Our Vision: Croswell-Lexington students are supported by our local community

and prepared to enter the global community.

Our Mission: Croswell-Lexington Schools, in partnership with students, families, and

community, will equip all students with the skills to maximize educational and personal
potential enabling them to become responsible, successful citizens.

Our Guiding Principles (Values): Excellence, Integrity, Responsibility, Community,

Compassion, Respect, Character
OVERVIEW

The Croswell-Lexington School District is a rural district in the Thumb of Michigan

covering approximately 165 square miles. Within that area the four communities of
Croswell, Lexington, Jeddo, and Applegate are all located. Currently our district has
2210 students. Along with that, our district has a program called CL5 which is an early
college program. Students can earn an associates degree through our community
college while staying an extra year. We have eighty students participating in that
program. The student in our district attend one of our elementary school; Frostick
or Meyer, our Middle School, or our High School. All of our buildings were recently
updated and remodeled through a bond during the summer of 2011. Even though our
community has been generous to our schools and our bond, the socio-economic level of
our district remains at close to 50%.

The distribution of students in the Croswell-Lexington School District is as follows:

Other District Office 13

Our district continues to make a constant commitment to quality education for

student through various innovative ideas. One of them, mentioned about is the CL5
program. Another one is the fact that our staff have access to wireless technology
on campus. Going into the fall we will be providing iPads for all students from fifth up
through the twelfth grade. This is all done with funds that continue to be the lowest per
pupil foundation allowance level in the state for districts. We believe that students in
rural communities can gain access to extended educational opportunities through the
use of the internet and connecting with the global communities around us.

TECHNOLOGY VISION AND GOALS

VISION:
Technology will help us to prepare our students for requirements desired by
colleges and the work force. We will make sure that this same technology is used to
prepare them for success in the 21st century.
Technology is already infused into our students learning process so we will use it to:
Acquire, organize, analyze and present information
Demonstrate knowledge of the social and ethical implications
Expand their range and effectiveness of communication skills.
Perform technology related activities and demonstrate technological
literacy in conformance with state and technology standards.
Become a life-long learner.

In support of the technologically literate graduate and in order to produce a smooth

running and efficient organization, the instructional staff and administrative users
(including users at Building Offices, Central Office, Food Services, Transportation,
Maintenance, and Technology) in the Croswell-Lexington Community Schools will be
able to perform the tasks expected of the Croswell-Lexington graduate, as well as, the
following:
Use technology as a tool for management in support of the learning process.
Acquire, organize, analyze, and present information to their colleagues through
technology
Expand the range and effectiveness of their communication skills within the
classroom.
Actively seek out new ways to apply technology to aid them in their curriculum
instruction or work functions.

A District Technology Advisory Committee, the iTeam chaired by the District

Technology Coordinator, includes a Board member and provides guidance to advance
the use of technology in the school district.
Every building in the district is linked together by the use of technology. The
wiring supports telephone and computer technology in all locations. The district also
established a fiber optic link to the St. Clair Intermediate School District for business
applications and student information services.
Every teachers classroom has a telephone with voice mail capability,a networked
computer for attendance, grades, and instructional purposes, and the Internet, a ceiling
mounted projector and interactive whiteboard. In addition, the Croswell-Lexington
School District has announced a One-to-One iPad initiative for the 2012-2013 school
year and beyond. Every student in grades 5-12 will receive a WIFI-equipped iPad that
will contain digital textbooks, novels, and a multitude of learning tools and applications.
In addition to the One-to-One iPad initiative in grades 5-12, about 150 iPads are already
being used in school by students in grades K-4. Combined with mini-laptops, laptops,
and desktop computers, the district will achieve its goal of technology in the hands of
every student, every day.

Curriculum Integration
Our district is committed to ensuring that all Croswell-Lexington students will use
technology for knowledge and skill acquisition, communication and information
management, problems solving, creative expression, research, design, and product
development. Learners become technologically capable when they apply technology
across curricular area and when technology is used throughout the learning process.
Our curriculum will emphasize meeting the Common Core Curriculum Standards

Goal 1: Technology will support student learning. Technology will be integrated in

content areas across grade levels on a 1 to 1 initiative for students through the use of
iPads, netbooks, laptops, and desktops.

Goal 2: Students and staff will have access to the Internet 99% of the time. This will
include the use of email, collaboration tools, web-based instruction, videos, podcasts,
and other online resources.

Goal 3: The staff will have access to email 99% of the time.

Goal 4: Review of curriculum at Elementary, Middle School and High School levels
to assure alignment with current, relevant METS (Michigan Educational Technology
Standards) and ISTE (International Technology Standards in Education).

Goal 5: The iTeam will continue to reevaluate future goals.

Goal 6: To continue to offer professional development opportunities to our Staff for

technology training.

Goal 7: To continue to build on (improvements) to the District website and other

communication devices for parents and community members.

Collaborations

We have teamed with many entities to provide exemplary technology services to our
students and staff.
St. Clair County RESA
The RESA provides Croswell-Lexington Community Schools with filtered internet
access, hosts the districts business, student information, and library cataloging
data bases, and provides end user training and support.
Sanilac ISD
The Sanilac ISD provides training and support for assistive technology needs and
Special Education reporting. We collaborate with them to provide Teach for the
Future Training on integrating technology into instruction.

courseware on the Michigan Virtual University site.
Community
The district provides the programming on Channel 6 for our community.
Google
Provides Google App Domains for email, calendaring, online storage and
collaborative tools for staff and students.

Croswell-Lexington Community Schools continues to seek liaisons with local, state, and
federal level organizations in support of our technology initiatives. The district has no
Adult Education or GED certification Program. These programs are offered through
Brown City Schools.

Parental Communications/Community Relations

Parent involvement is important for the learning process. Technology enables us to

disseminate information regularly and update it in a timely manner. We have expanded
our resources to include the following communications opportunities:
School messenger system to communicate rapidly with families for school
closings, absences, emergencies, lunch overages, etc.
Facebook for individual schools and district
Telephone/Voice Mail for teachers and administrators
Google E-Mail for teachers and administrators
Google docs for quick sharing and editing of documents between staff and
between home and school
Data Director record keeping and test generating system
Early Elementary Report card that is computer-generated
District, School and Teacher Web Pages
District Web Page has links to many educational sites
Student Data Management Software to produce attendance reports for parents
TATV cable station for educational programming
Parent Connect System gives parents online access to their childs grades,
assignments, attendance, and schedule

Professional Development
Related District Goal: All teachers and administrators are able to use
technological skills to gather, produce, and disseminate information and
integrate technology into the curriculum. All teachers will be able to use
technology skills to communicate with parents and students on a regular
basis.

Our district will continue to provide a systematic, comprehensive training

program for our teachers and staff. This will facilitate the infusion of technology
tools into the instructional process of our K-12 classrooms and thereby develop the
technical literacy of our districts students.
With the district focus on integrating technology into the core curriculum, our
professional development spotlight has shifted to providing staff education on the
subject of integration techniques. Professional development is an integral part of our
technology plan. From the beginning, as desktop computers were purchased, training
was provided.
Network-based Resources (i.e., District-developed manual of technology
resources available in the district, which will be searchable on the district intranet,
self-study materials such as how-to documents)
St. Clair I.S.D. training provided for business applications and student record
keeping, as well as library automation (media center personnel)
District personnel provides most of our training so that it is tailored to teacher
needs. Our staff attends in-service training sessions and then provides training to
other staff members following the Train-The-Trainer (T3) model. We will continue to
provide opportunities for our staff to work cooperatively, to brainstorm, collaborate, and
successfully integrate technology-based ideas and teaching methods. On-line and
face-to-face collaboration between instructional staff members will continue throughout
the school year at department, building, and in-service meetings. We will continue our
focus: teaching academic skills with technology as a tool for enhancing and extending
the educational opportunities of our students.

Technology Infrastructure
The district infrastructure includes the following components:
High speed wide area network with a gigabit Ethernet used between buildings carried on
a fiber backbone.
Backbone structure in building is 1 gigabit fiber with 10/100 CAT-5 cable to the desktop.
Microsoft network software managing communication on the district network.
Windows 2003 and 2008 servers, and Linux servers connecting over 500 desktop PCs
and 600 laptops.
District productivity software platform is a mix of Microsoft Office 2010.
Every classroom and office has a telephone, at least one PC, a network connection, and
access to shared or personal printers.
Shared network directories exist for student projects and teacher collaboration. (All
grade 3-12 students and all staff have a home directory.)
Electronic links through the District web site exist to connect students and staff to outside
businesses and government links.
Common operating platform (Windows), student information reporting software, and
business control software.
Google Apps Domains for collaboration, digital portfolios and student email.
A Moodle server for online instruction.
A Renaissance Place Server for online instruction and assessments.

Implementation Schedule
The commitment of the Board of Education to equipping the district with the latest
technology has resulted in the expenditure of over 2 million dollars in the last five years.
The district plans to continue allocating resources that are available and apply for USF
funds (approximately $34,000) for access. In the past the district has been awarded
TLCF grants and an IDEA grant for Assistive Technology. If similar programs are
available in the future, we will again apply for funds. We continue to seek other sources
of revenue. The following timeline shows our commitment to ensure all students and
teachers have increased access to technology.

Evaluation Methodology
The previous evaluation method became old quickly when we switched to google.
The use of google forms to provide surveys to parents, students and staff members is a
much quicker way to gather the data that we require from technology users to enhance
our planning. The use of technology has also become more of a need rather than
something that a teacher or a student would just use once a week, therefore, some of
the surveys from our previous plan were quickly obsolete. To that end, when surveying
staff and students at the end of each year, the survey may change to meet the quickly
changing technology as we grow with it. Many of our questions at the end of our next
year will focus on our 1 to 1 initiative and the benefits for all that came from that. There
will be questions on the ease of use of iPads, ease of communicating through various
avenues with students, teachers, and even administrators, and there will be questions
as to the environment that this immersion into the availability of on-line all the time has
provided for students.
On the technology end, the questions will focus on the actual technology
instruments that are being used. Is there enough support to maintain what we have? Is
there enough replacement if there are damages? Was there a problem with storage on
the machines? Was there a problem with students posting things that should not have
been posted on a social media site even though we addressed that in our training with
students. At the elementary level, how important is the use of a keyboard? There are
many questions that will continue to be generated.

1. Support

District software and equipment are continuously updated.

Educational software is reviewed annually for currency and relevance to the curriculum.
Productivity software is reviewed annually for currency and effectiveness in supporting
district operations and curriculum.
Network operating systems and workstation operating systems are reviewed annually and
upgraded as needed to provide a consistent and current platform throughout the district.

either sign the Acceptable Use Policy or a statement acknowledging they have read the
policy. There are also policies for iPad acceptable use for students and staff that have
been developed.

Croswell-Lexington School District

Elementary Student Acceptable Use Policy
for Internet and On-Line Electronic Resource Usage

Introduction to the Parent or Legal Guardian:

Electronic information resources are available to students in the Croswell-Lexington
School District. These resources include the use of the computer and access to the
Internet. Our district goal in providing electronic services to students is to promote
educational excellence by facilitating resource use, innovation, communication, and
acceptable use.
Because the Internet contains an unregulated collection of resources, the district
cannot guarantee the accuracy of the information or the appropriateness of any
material that a student may encounter. The district has taken precautions, however,
to restrict access to inappropriate or illegal materials through a filtering and monitoring
system. Therefore, before using the districts on-line resources, each student and his
or her parent or guardian will sign and return the Croswell-Lexington School District
Acceptable Use Agreement, which is attached.

Certificated staff will supervise students while using on-line resources and services at
the school site, and may ask instructional assistants and student aides to assist in this
supervision.
For the Student - Acceptable Use Agreement:
Acceptable use means that as a student in the Croswell-Lexington School District,
you will promise to use the computer and those special learning tools and programs,
such as the Internet, with respect. Acceptable use means you will promise to abide
by the school and district rules outlined here. These rules will also be taught to you by
your teachers and computer specialists in your own classroom or school. You must
understand that the use of these electronic teaching and learning tools are designed to
support your education. If rules are broken, a student may lose his/her privilege to use
the computer and the Internet. Please pay special attention to the following:
1. Be Polite and Show Respect. When using the computer to write, send, or receive messages
or information, always use kind, proper language and abide by the rules of friendliness. What
you write or receive using electronic machines may be viewed by others with or without your
knowledge. You must not vandalize or abuse the equipment. Show respect for property, for
others, and for yourself. The computer and electronic resources belong to the school district.
2. Be Honest and Obey the Rules: Do not do things on the computer that would be against
the rules, the law, or may be looked upon as dishonest. Use the computer and the Internet for
appropriate educational purposes only.
3. Keep Personal Things Private: Do not tell or show others any personal or family information
over the Internet such as: home address, phone numbers, passwords, personal photos when
used with names, or Social Security numbers. Do not log on or use another persons account.
Keep personal and electronic information private.
Croswell-Lexington School District

RULES ON ACCEPTABLE USE OF COMPUTER NETWORK RESOURCES

Use of the computer network is a privilege, not a right. The fundamental rule for use of
District computer network resources is that all use must be consistent with the Districts
educational goals and behavior expectations. Because electronic communications
are so varied and diverse, these rules do not attempt to enumerate all required or
proscribed behavior by system users. Users are expected to use common sense and
adhere to the norms of behavior in the school community. In particular, users should:
1. Be polite and courteous in all communications and language.
2. Assist others in the use of the system, and help others who are looking for ideas
or information.
3. Post and share information which is interesting and helpful to other users.
4. Always use the network as a resource to further their own education and that of
others.
5. Be mindful of network security, and immediately report any bugs, errors, or
security problems to the system administrator.

Users may not:

1. Use the District equipment for anything contrary to law, or to solicit others to
break any law.
2. Illegally copy, send, or distribute any copyrighted software, work, or other
material.
3. Send, publish, download, access, or retrieve any communication or material
which may be defamatory, abusive, obscene, profane, sexually explicit,
threatening, racially or ethnically offensive, harassing, or illegal, or anything
which violates or infringes on the rights of any person.
4. Use the network for any commercial purpose or financial gain.
5. Use the network for any advertisement or solicitation without approval from the
Superintendent.
6. Access, attempt to access, modify, or delete any district record or file without
permission or authorization.
Make any attempt to harm or destroy the data of any other user or any system on the
network, including creating or sending computer viruses, Trojan horses, or similar
computer code.
Use electronic mail to send unsolicited, bulk, chain, harassing, anonymous, or other
messages which are commonly considered an annoyance to recipients or degrade system
performance.
Use vulgarity, obscenity, or swearing in messages or electronic postings, or send e-mail/
message flames or other attacks.
Attempt to access material or sites which are blocked by the District, or attempt to use the
network while access privileges are suspended.
