Mobilizing and Organizing by Randolph and Baker

9:15am - 10:45am Power Role Play


Participants will be introduced to the dynamics of power through participating in interactive small group sessions and
then debriefing on their experience

10:45am - 11am Break and Networking

11am - 1pm What is Power?


Defining power, discussing experiences with power, introducing self-interest and distinguishing between dominant
and relational power

1pm - 2pm Lunch

2pm - 3pm Consent and Relational Trust

3pm - 3:45pm Individual Relational Meetings: Overview


Participants will learn the basic elements of an effective individual relational meeting and observe an example of a
relational meeting

3:45pm - 4:30pm Individual Relational Meetings: Practice


Participants practice individual relational meetings in small groups

4:30pm - 5:15pm Break

5:15pm - 6:30pm Cycle of Organizing in Schools + 3 Windows Theory


Participants will learn the steps in the cycle of organizing through a school-based example and how to analyze the
example using the 3 Windows Theory.

6:30pm - 6:45pm End of Day Reflection


Debrief the day and identify any open questions

Participants will reflect on and develop new tools for building relationships across lines of difference.

(Small group) Participants will learn how house meetings are used to build relationships and identify shared issues

12:30pm - 1:45 pm Moving from Problem to Issue + Taking Action


(Small Group) Participants will learn how to take the problems they hear from leaders in house meetings and shape that into a
winnable issue cut
Participants will learn how to choose tactics and action to provoke the reactions they need to move their campaigns
forward

1:45 pm - 2:00 pm School Organizing + Regional Strategy Development


(Whole Group) Participants will work together to develop a strategy for addressing issues in their communities + schools, including
next steps they can take in their regions

National School Organizing Workshop
Logistics Memo
October 6-8, 2017
Welcome to Dallas for the LEE National School Organizing Workshop! This memo contains all of the logistical
information you will need. For questions on your day of travel, contact Kristie Hamilton at

Dress code:
The dress code for the weekend is business casual. Weather in Dallas this time of year is pretty warm, we expect
highs near 90 and lows near 70. However, please bring a sweater or light jacket as sometimes it can get chilly in the
meeting space.

Procedures for Hotel Check-In/Check-Out:


If you indicated you require lodging, LEE has reserved a shared double room for you with another workshop
participant. You will only need to provide a photo ID and credit card for incidentals to check in. Check-in time is
3:00pm and check-out time is 11:00am.
*Please check out of your room on Sunday morning and bring your luggage with you! We will be finishing after
the hotels check-out time and you will be responsible for any fees associated with a late check-out.*

TRANSPORTATION TO HOTEL
Note: you are responsible for arranging your own airport transportation for the weekend. If you have any
special needs or extenuating circumstances regarding airport transportation, please contact Kristie Hamilton
(kristie.hamilton@educationalequity.org) as soon as possible, we will do our best to accommodate you.

Transportation options from Dallas - Fort Worth Airport:


LEE does not cover transportation costs to and from the airport. Transportation via UBER or LYFT to the Sheraton
Suites will cost approximately $30 and take close to 20 minutes, depending on traffic. If you choose UBER or
LYFT, please rideshare to cut down on costs. I will send a follow up email to all attendees arriving within the same
30 minutes so you all can connect, if desired.

Transportation options from Dallas Love Field Airport:


LEE does not cover transportation costs to and from the airport. Transportation via UBER or LYFT to the Sheraton
Suites will cost approximately $15 and take close to 15 minutes, depending on traffic. If you choose UBER or

LYFT, please rideshare to cut down on costs. I will send a follow up email to all attendees arriving within the same
30 minutes so you all can connect, if desired.

TRANSPORTATION TO UPLIFT LUNA


We will be coordinating Uber and Lyft rides with a member of LEE staff onsite. Please meet in the hotel lobby at
the Sheraton Suites no later than 7:30am on Saturday and Sunday. We will serve breakfast at the venue upon arrival.

MEAL INFORMATION
Breakfast and lunch on Saturday and Sunday will be provided. You will be on your own for dinner on Friday
evening, we encourage you to speak to the LEE Staff contact about dinner on Friday evening. Breakfast will be
served at Uplift Luna beginning at 7:45am. Coffee and drinks will be provided periodically throughout the day.
There will be vegetarian, vegan, gluten and dairy-free options per your requests. If you have additional dietary
restrictions that you have not yet communicated, please contact Kristie ASAP
(kristie.hamilton@educationalequity.org). While limited refreshments will be provided, please note that these are
long days; we encourage you to bring your own snacks, refillable water bottles and beverages as needed to stay
focused and energized throughout the workshop.

For our members interested in pursuing a career in Organizing, we invite you to join us on Sunday morning at
7:45am for breakfast with Sally Mayes, Senior Director of Organizing Career Leadership.
