UsetheDefinemenu>MassSourcecommandtoaccesstheDefineMassSourceform.Choosetodefinethe
sourceofthemassofabuildingasfromselfmassandspecifiedmass,fromloads,orfromacombinationofself
mass,specifiedmass,andloads.Alsospecifyhowlateralmassistobeconsidered.

FromSelfandSpecifiedMassoption.Eachstructuralelementhasamaterialpropertyassociatedwithit
oneoftheitemsspecifiedinthematerialpropertiesisamassperunitvolume.Whenthischeckboxis
checked,ETABSdeterminesthebuildingmassassociatedwiththeelementmassbymultiplyingthe
volumeofeachstructuralelementtimesitsspecifiedmassperunitvolume.Thisisthedefault.

Itisalsopossibletoassignadditionalmasstoaccountforpartitions,cladding,andsoforth.(See
AdditionalAreaMass,AdditionalLineMass,andAdditionalPointMass.)ETABSaddsanyadditional
massassignmentstotheelementmasstoderiveatotalmass.

Also,iflinkpropertieshavebeenassignedtoajointorframeobject,ETABSalsoincludesthemassand
weightasspecifiedinthelinkpropertydefinition(seeLinkProperties).

Bydefault,thetotalmassisappliedtoeachjointinthestructureonatributaryareabasisinallthree
translationaldirections.Notethatadditionalmassescanbeinputasnegative,andthatthoseadditional
massesareaddedtothemassesdeterminedfromthematerialpropertymasses.If,asaresultof
includingnegativeadditionalmassthenetmassatajointisnegative,ETABSsetsthemassatthatjoint
tozero.

FromLoadsoption.Specifyaloadcombinationthatessentiallydefinesthemassofthestructure.The
massisequaltotheweightdefinedbytheloadcombinationdividedbythegravitationalmultiplier,g.Only
theglobalZdirectionloadsareconsideredwhencalculatingthemass.Thismassisappliedtoeachjoint
inthestructureonatributaryareabasisinallthreetranslationaldirections.Netdownwardloadsactingon
ajointareconsideredapositivemass.Ifthenetloadactingonajointisupward,themassatthatjointis
settozero.NegativemassisnotallowedinETABS.Bydefault,themassisappliedtoeachjointinthe
structureonatributaryareabasisinallthreetranslationaldirections.

Notethatalthoughitispossibletoassignadditionalmasstoaccountforpartitions,cladding,andsoforth
(seehyperlinksabove),whenthisoptionisselected,ETABSignoresanyadditionalmassassignments,
includinglinkpropertyassignment(seehyperlinkabove),inderivingthebuildingmass.

DefineMassMultiplierforLoadsarea.ThisareaisactivewhentheFromLoadsoptionis
selected.Themasssourceloadcombinationiscreatedbyspecifyingoneormoreloadcases,each
withanassociatedscalefactor.

AddAddaloadcasetothemasssourceloadcombinationdefinitionasfollows.

1. SelecttheloadcasenamefromtheLoaddropdownlist.

2. TypeinanappropriatescalefactorintheMultipliereditbox.

3. ClicktheAddbutton.

ModifyModifythemasssourceloadcombinationdefinitionasfollows.

FromSelfandSpecificMassandLoadsoption.Usethisoptiontocombinetheothertwooptions,
allowingconsiderationofselfweight,specifiedmass,andloadsinthesameanalysis.Withthisoption,
ETABSaddsthefollowingmasses

SelfWeight.Buildingmassassociatedwiththeelementmassobtainedbymultiplyingthevolume
ofeachstructuralelementtimesitsspecifiedmassperunitvolume.

Loads.Weightdefinedbytheloadcombinationdividedbythegravitationalmultiplier,g.Onlythe
globalZdirectionloadsareconsideredwhencalculatingthemass.

SpecifiedMass.Possibleadditionalmassassignedtoaccountforpartitions,cladding,andsoforth
aswellaslinkpropertyassignments(seehyperlinksabove).

Bydefault,themassisappliedtoeachjointinthestructureonatributaryareabasisinallthree
translationaldirections.Netdownwardloadsactingonajointareconsideredapositivemass.Ifthenet
loadactinguponajointisupward,themassatthatjointissettozero.Negativemassisnotallowedin
ETABS.Therefore,althoughadditionalmassescanbeinputasnegativeandtheadditionalmassesare
addedtothemassesdeterminedfromthematerialpropertymasses,ifthenetmassatajointisnegative,
ETABSsetsthemassatthatjointtozero.

IncludeLateralMassOnlycheckbox.Ifthischeckboxischecked,onlyassignedtranslationalmassin
theglobalXandYaxesdirectionsandassignedrotationalmassmomentsofinertiaabouttheglobalZ
axisareconsideredintheanalysis.Allotherassignedmassesareignored.

Checkthisboxifyoudonotwanttoconsiderverticaldynamicsinthemodel.

Leavethisboxuncheckedifyoudowanttoconsiderverticaldynamics.

LumpLateralMassatStoryLevelscheckbox.Asthenamesuggests,thisoption"moves"lateralmass
thatmayoccurbetweenstorylevelstotheneareststorylevelduringanalysis.Thisoptioncanbeusedin
conjunctionwiththedefault(i.e.,FromSelfandSpecifiedMassoptionforwhichthetotalmassisapplied
toeachjointinthestructureonatributaryareabasisinallthreetranslationaldirections)andwiththe
IncludeLateralMassOnlyoption.
