2 Cottage Crafts Hub as a Cultural

Innovative & Creative

Community Interaction

Introduction

While Design 1 & 2 during the First Year introduced the

fundamentals of architecture within the context of
nature and rural, Design 3 brings you to the more
challenging sub-urban context. Issues of studies during
this term focuses on the aspects of culture and history
while also addressing questions of scale, measure,
materiality, methodology, program and mapping.

This project is about exploring the idea of

cultural/community/historical architecture and
its architectural manifestation.

Culture + History + Community

and Architecture

Your design should address the following issues:

Celebration of entrance;
Clarity of circulation;
Adaptive of building to site & surrounding;
Clarity of form;
Clarity of individual space requirement;
Clarity of each spatial and overall organization;
Inter-relation of internal / external spaces;
Consideration of individual scale, building scale and
community scale;
Segregation of private / public zone;
Appropriate use of material;
Identity of the place (genius loci);
Identification of structural system;
Fire safety and security consideration;

Project Objectives

To conceptualize architectural investigations and to

scrutinize ideas drawn from cultural & history
sources.
To understand the meaning of community needs
and develop a strategy to incorporate it into design
decisions.
To introduce a feasible & comprehensive spatial
order in designing spaces.
To further strengthen the knowledge on creating
appropriate massing/form in relation to site - Micro
& Macro.
To be able to develop design concept and approach
using appropriate design principles and
vocabularies.
To be able to analyze and respond to environmental
and site factors (i.e. land profile, accessibility,
climate, vegetation, neighboring site, & etc.)

Cottage Crafts Center/Home
Based Products Hub for Local
Community

''Industri desa ini mempunyai potensi untuk berkembang

maju dan berdaya saing bukan saja di peringkat nasional,
malahan ke seluruh dunia.

''Sebagai contohnya batik dan kraftangan telah berjaya

mendapat pasaran antarabangsa dengan bermula sebagai
industri desa. (Annuar Musa)

Any individual having expertise and passion about any types

of crafts making can initiate a profitable home based crafts
making business. Crafts making business can be initiated as
a home based and can be operated as part-time also.
Todays crafts industry has significantly shifted in consumer
demand, towards value-centered products, services, and
experiences which meet emotional as well as functional
needs.

The word craft is most closely associated with terms

suggesting authenticity and quality, particularly the words
handmade, workmanship and genuine. It is also the word
most likely to be seen as associated with the terms personal
and for everyone.

Crafts is an industry where specific opportunities exist to

attract new buyers to craft by targeting consumers of luxury
goods and brands. Connecting craft to specific lifestyle
interests and market niches could enable potential and
lapsed buyers to meet their existing needs through craft
.(Fred Lam)

This studio focuses on how local culture, history and

cottage crafts and home based products mixes (or
not?) together to form the life and identity of the local
society that we see today. With this understanding,
students must develop a strategy to anticipate how
architecture can offer a platform to develop local culture
progressively without sacrificing their original identity.
In other words, it shall be an architecture piece that
speaks to the younger generation while respecting
those age-old traditions.

Issues emerging from analysis and discussion of the

initial study will program a set of architectural elements
that will be developed into an abstract and volumetric
space. Your task then is to develop this space into a
Cottage Craft Centre /Hub that will be used to not
only offer space for handicraft and home based product
but to be fully utilized by the local for cultural activity
(or activities).

With proper site analysis, the building must respond

well to the context. It must predominantly manifest the
identified culture and history of the local community. As
a good architect it is also recommended that student
include a strategy for a sustainable development.

The project should display skills in understanding
spatial quality, mass and form, building envelope
and enclosure, and basic construction system.
Natural lighting and ventilation must also be
considered in designing the Cottage Craft Hub as part
of being ecologically sustainable. A minimum of 50%
Malaysian timber must be used for the entire project.

Site Analysis
Site analysis is a vital step in the design process. It
involves the evaluation of an existing or potential
site in relation to the development program,
environmental impact, impacts on the community
and adjacent properties, project budget, and
schedule. The site analysis identifies
environmental, program, and development
constraints and opportunities. A well-executed site
analysis forms the essential foundation for a cost-
effective, environmentally sensitive, and rational
approach to architecture development.

Sensitive owners and designers understand that

from the facility users perspective, the site and the
structures constructed on it are one. Good building
design responds to the inherent qualities of the site
and at the same time transforms the site into a
place that accommodates human enterprise and
satisfaction.
- Floyd Zimmerman, AIA (American Institute of
Architects)

To achieve the above, you (in groups) are required

to use the SWOT analysis technique to analyze the
site (whenever it is possible). The site analysis that
you are required to produce shall also fulfill the
following checklist.

a) Natural Analysis
1) Climate
a) Sun orientation
b) Shadow
c) Wind directions
2) Topography (Topographic maps, aerial photos &
site sections)
3) Water/Hydrology
4) Vegetation

b) Built Environment Analysis

Land Use

1)Zoning/Building type (Commercial, Government,

Office, Residential, Public)
b) Open spaces

b) Public transportation (Bus stops
etc./Drop off points)
c) Pedestrian

3) Urban Pattern (Lynch Analysis)

a) Paths (Main/Secondary)
b) Nodes
c) Edges
d) Landmarks
e) Districts

Precedent Study
In architecture precedents are used widely and one
will usually be asked to refer to precedents during
both educational and professional career. This is
true as precedent studies can aid design process
from concept to final design. It is worth noting that
precedents are not copied but instead used as an
inspiration to your design, an idea or guide to a
method or technique that you wish to employ in
your design scheme.

In this task, you (in groups) are required to produce

a precedent study in regards to your 3rd project,
Cottage Craft Hub. The requirements are as
follows:

Type of building : Cottage Craft Center/Cottage

Industry /Handicraft Centre (>200m2 in size)
Nos. of buildings : 2 buildings per group
Format : Standardized A2 (to
be reformat in A3 at the end of semester)
Contents : 1) Basic information
2) Images
3) Concept / Ideas (to
elaborate in detail)
4) Floor plans/ Elevations/
Sections
5) Space (Public - Semi
Private)
6) Massing
7) Geometry
8) Hierarchy
9) Circulation

Every section of the contents must be explained

clearly and shortly. Content 3 9 must be
accompanied by schematic diagrams, as shown in
the given examples.
