A botanist is a person who studies plants. There are more tha 400 000 different
kinds of plants in the world. Plants grow wherever there are water, air, and sunlight with
some earth.

Plants are even found in Greenland. The poppy can be found in the iced land. In the
deserts, we can find plants such as cacti and aloes. Apart from these, plants are also found in
rivers,lakes and swamps. The only place where plants cannot live is the lower part of the deep
sea where natural light does not penetrate.

Most of the plants are green in colour. Because they contain chlorophyll. It is the green
substance in plants that allows them to use the energy from the sun. Nevertheless,
there are non-green plants as well. Bacteria, yeast, and mould do not need sunlight and soil.

Read the story below and answer the questions that follow.

David celebrated his twelfth birthday a week ago. His parents threw a grand
party for him. Many of his relatives and friends came to the party. Three of his
teachers attended the function too.

A few days before the celebration, Daviss brother Kelvin, and his friends
cleaned and decorated the house with coloured lights, streamers, and balloons.

The party began at 7.00 p.m. but the guests were there as early as 6.00p.m.
Kelvin played some music to entertain the guests. David was very happy. He
welcomed all the guests and shook hands with them. He was dressed in a new suit
which his father bought for him.

David cut the cake at 7.00 p.m. The cake had twelve candles on it. The guests
sang the Happy Birthday song and gave him presents. Then, they ate the delicious
food and enjoyed playing games. The party ended at 9.00p.m.
