MODULE CODE: ME4111 LEVEL: 4 CREDITS: 30

TITLE: Engineering and Mechanical Principles

PRE-REQUISITES: None

CO-REQUISITES: None

MODULE SUMMARY (INDICATIVE)

This module introduces the students to the fundamentals of thermodynamics and
fluid mechanics along with solid mechanics (statics and dynamics). The
thermodynamics and fluid mechanics sections of the module introduces the key
concepts of system, work, heat and the main laws of Thermodynamics (zeroth, first
and second laws) with special reference to their engineering applications. This
section also introduces the main equations of fluid statics and dynamics, properties
of fluids and their measurement methodology and units. The solid mechanics section
provides an understanding of the behaviour of particles and rigid bodies whilst
stationary and in motion. Bodies under equilibrium conditions are studied and the
external and internal parameters such as force, moment, stress, strain etc. are
defined, derived and used for problem solving. This section also introduces
kinematics and kinetics/dynamics of particles and rigid bodies with their engineering
applications. The module is primarily delivered through lectures supported by
tutorials sessions and laboratories. Course materials will be available on
StudySpace.

AIMS (DEFINITIVE)
To introduce students to the main thermodynamic principles and laws with
their engineering applications.
To provide an understanding of the main fluid mechanics equations, fluid
properties and their measurements techniques.
To introduce the fundamental principles and engineering applications of stress
analysis, structures and dynamics.
To develop the ability and skills in problem solving related to engineering
problems.

LEARNING OUTCOMES (DEFINITIVE)

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
State the fundamental laws of thermodynamics & describe the effects of their
associated equations.
Describe the fundamental properties and characteristics of a fluid and state
the basic equations of fluid statics and fluid dynamics.
Apply the basic principles of thermodynamics and the mechanics of fluids to simple
engineering situations.

TEACHING AND LEARNING STRATEGY (INDICATIVE)

The module is delivered by a combination of lectures, seminars and practical
sessions. Teaching notes, guided reading, problem solving case studies and other
supplementary materials will be available on the StudySpace and can be accessed
via the dedicated module site. The appropriate use of technology to enhance
learning is encouraged, this will include, but not be limited to, the use of the tools
built into StudySpace such as discussion board and group working tools and, where
appropriate, application of specialist software (e.g. MATLAB) and general software
such as spreadsheets to analyse data and help determine solutions to engineering
problems.

Formal lectures are used to introduce and develop key concepts while the
accompanying programme of laboratory and tutorial sessions focus on examples of
application and give opportunities to acquire deeper insight into the concepts being
explored. The tutorial sessions are integrated into the teaching programme and
provide an opportunity for feedback at regular intervals as part of the various
formative exercises used to prepare students for the summative assessments, these
will include the introduction of the basic analytical techniques used to solve
engineering problems in solid mechanics and thermofluids.
BREAKDOWN OF TEACHING AND LEARNING HOURS

DEFINITIVE KIS CATEGORY INDICATIVE DESCRIPTION HOURS

Scheduled learning and 38 lectures x2 hours 76
teaching 16 tutorial/seminars x2 hours 32
4 laboratory sessions x3 hrs 12
Guided independent study Preparatory reading, tutorial 180
and laboratory exercises.

ASSESSMENT STRATEGY (INDICATIVE)

Summative assessment will be both coursework and written examination. The
coursework exercises including, two in-course tests, test 1 will be Multiple Choice
and done online (worth 10%), test 2 will be short answer questions (worth 15%) and
four laboratory reports (worth 15%). The module will conclude with a two-hour end
of year unseen examination worth 60%, comprising of a combination of long and
short answer questions. Formative assessment will be provided through the
tutorial/seminar work which should provide opportunities to feed-forward and thus
inform the summative assessments. Feed-forward opportunities are also present
during the laboratory sessions. allowing students to explore some of the concepts
practically and in more depth. The first of the four laboratory reports will be used as a
formative opportunity allowing for feedback to inform the later three summative
reports. Feedback on formative and summative assessment should take place
regularly, again within the tutorial/seminar sessions.
