In a DC-DC Converter, both input and output voltages are DC. It uses a power semiconductor
device as a switch to turn on and off the DC supply to the load. The switch action can be
implemented by a BJT, a MOSFET, or an IGBT. A DC-DC converter with only one switch is
often known as a DC chopper. A chopper switch is shown below a) if switch one St is turned on,
the supply voltage Vs is connected to the load. If the switch is turned off, the inductive load
current io is forced to flow through diode Dm. the output voltage and load current are shown
below (b),

Figure 1 DC-DC converter a) circuit b) output voltage and current

The parameter of switch can be adjusted to model the voltage drop of the chopper. We use the
switch parameters Ron =1M, ROFF=10E+6, VON =IV, and VOFF=OV and the diode parameter IS
=2.22E-15, BV=1200V, CJO=OF, and TT=0. The diodes parasitic are neglected; however, they
will affect the transient behavior.

R is 5ohm, the filter inductance is L=145.84uH, and the filter capacitance is C=200uF. The
chopping frequency is fc=25 kHz, and the duty cycle of the chopper is k=42%.the control voltage
is shown below in (b).

Conclusion:-when the transistor in the switched on mode the converter is on and the current
flows from the supply to the load. When the converter in switched off the load current continues
to flow through freewheeling diode Dm. and the output voltage become from 12 volt to around
2.9 volt, this is step down because of buck converter.
The base resistance RB is needed to limit the base drive current of the BJT switch. The LC
output filter is needed to reduce the ripples on the load voltage and current. For a duty cycle of k
= 0.42, the average voltage at the output of the converter is

5ohm, the filter inductance is L=150 uH, and the filter capacitance is C=200uF. The chopping
frequency is fc=25 kHz, and the duty cycle of the chopper is k=25%.the control voltage is shown
below in (b).

Conclusion: - the circuit operation can be divided into two modes

During mode 1: begins when transistor Q1 is switched on and diode D1is reverse biased. The
input current which rises, flow through inductor L and transistor Q1.

During Mode 2: begin when transistor Q1 is switched off and the current that was flowing
through the inductor L would now flow through L, C, Load and diode D1.

The base drive voltage is increased to 40 V in order to reduce distortion on the switch voltage
and the converter output voltage. The output voltage is negative.

For a duty cycle of k = 0.25, the average load voltage is

resistance R is 100 ohm .the inductance is L=150uH, and the filter capacitance is C=220uF. The
chopping frequency is fc= 25 kHz, and the duty cycle of the chopper is k=66.7%. The control

average load voltage is the load voltage
has not yet reached the steady-state value since the resonant frequency is 796.14Hz at a resonant

A DC-AC converter is commonly known as an inverter. The input in an inverter is DC, and the
output is AC. The power semiconductor device perform the switching action, the desired output
is obtained by varying their turn-on and turn-off time. They must have controllable turn-on and
turn-off characteristics. The commonly used devices are BJTs, MOSFETs, IGBTs, GTOs,
MCTs, and forced commutated thyristors. We use PSpice switches, BJTs and IGBTs to simulate
the characteristics of the inverters:

Voltage-source inverter
Current-source inverter

A single phase bridge inverter is shown below. The DC input voltage is 100V. it is operated at an
output frequency of fo=60Hz. The load purely resistive with R=25ohm.Use PSpice to (a) plot the
instantaneous output voltage Vo and (b) calculate the Fourier coefficient of output voltage Vo.

Conclusion-: Because voltage-controlled switches will allow bidirectional current flow, they
will produce the correct output voltage with a resistive load only. By varying the modulation
voltage _mod (or carrier signal Vcr) from 0.01 to 0.99 V, the on time of a switch and the output
voltage can be changed.
