Personal Statement

I was born near by the oldest national park in the country; Way Kambas. Since I
was child, my family and I believe that man should live harmoniously with nature. Nature
indeed bring prosperity to the surrounding, but we should not be greedy and only take
what necessary and never forget to give it back to the nature. Otherwise, the nature
would take more. Unfortunately when people around this national park make it too far,
they finally had a conflict with the elephants. At the end, both sides are harmed. So
understanding the way our environment works; how soils, landforms, vegetation and
fauna, make me appreciate even more the wisdom.

On the other hand, my lecture convinced me that education leads people to the
right path of life. Education is not only about transferring knowledge and merely
conducted inside the class; furthermore, it builds the character and gives a better views
about how to deal with their environment ideally. These circumstances stimulate me to
pursue higher degree of education and to learn more willingly about how our
environment works

By mastering this science, I have a vision to become a lecture and actively

educate and develop environmental-based education through the activities that I will
arrange in the future. Conducting researches, teaching, training for my students,
preserving the quality of natural resources, its sustainability, including giving advice in
urban system, coastal area, forestry and modernization to the government in my
province will be new challenges and a noble works. Currently, both education and
poverty level of the society in Lampung Province, Indonesia, literally becomes a
concern, whereas this province has considerable potential to be developed due to its
excessive natural and human resources. Unfortunately, many people living in coastal
and rural areas have inadequate levels of education and less concerned about
the environment because generally they dont realize the direct impact they will face in
the near future. It will be much better if human resources in that area are managed by
giving some training and education in order to introduce how their environment system
run so that they have awareness to wisely gain the benefits and also preserve it. These
conditions persuade me to continue my study to focus on the environmental science.
This is needed in Indonesia as a developing country because of the following reasons:

1. It will improve the quality of natural resources in my area particularly and

Indonesia in general
2. It will strengthen the sustainability of natural resources as well as human
resources development in Indonesia.
By considering those two factors, I see that the study will benefit the nation in general.

As the graduate student of University of Lampung, I had numerous opportunities

and activities inside and outside of the campus. During my freshman year, I joined
English Debating Club which focused on building critical thinking and also public
speaking. It also discussed about current natural issues and triggered me to overcome
the problems through new perspective and logical arguments. Apart from studying, I
was trusted as a head of Executive Student Association and Science Education Student
Association. From these organizations, I learned a lot of things such as leadership,
teamwork, management, and socialization which is also related to the research and
people management.

Outside of the campus, as part of my extracurricular activities, I had a chance to

go overseas, be a representative of Indonesia as Youth Ambassador for
Intergovernmental Youth Exchange Program in 2014. Through that program, I learned
how to manage myself and being involved with the others that have different
backgrounds and nationalities. I was also part of the team that established a foundation
and actively involved in empowering youth community in terms of environmental-based
education in rural and remote areas. Moreover, I was delegated by my workplace to
take a certification on land navigation and survival for a month, being invited to be a
trainer and speaker in particular events. Those activities are aimed to make a balance
between my soft skills and hard skills. I love to interact with people and I realize that
becoming a useful person for environment and other people is rewarding.

The Australian National University has much to offer for students all around the
world, given of its outstanding academic reputation. The ANU is also well-known for
providing best facilities, student services and high quality standard of learning. Besides,
the campus for study is strategically surrounded by nature reserve, national parks, and
including the highest ground of the country which will make students feel convenient to
study environment. Those reasons will definitely create the best output that is qualified
graduate. In addition, Australia and Indonesia has resemblances in terms of climate,
vegetation structure, and animal communities, therefore, they share many features in
the way biome functions which I believe I could learn and appreciate even more about
its own uniqueness. I am willing to learn in Master Environmental Science because it
relates to my visions and future goals. I believe that I can be much better if I am being
trained and encouraged through this most reputable university in Australia.

Sincerely,
