A researcher designed an experiment to test the effect of drug X on eating behavior. The amount of
food eaten by a group of rats in a one-week period prior to ingesting drug X was recorded. The rats
were then given drug X and the amount of food eaten in a one-week period was again recorded. The
following amounts of food in grams were eaten during the before and after conditions.

Food Eaten
Before Ingesting Drug X After Ingesting Drug X
S1 100 60
S2 180 80
S3 160 110
S4 220 140
S5 140 100
S6 250 200
S7 170 100
S8 220 180
S9 120 140
S10 210 130

Step 1. Hypotheses

Ho: Drug X has no effect on the eating behavior.

Ha: Drug X has an effect on the eating behavior.

Step 2.

= 0.05

Step 3. Calculations
Before Drug X After Drug X Paired Sample t-test
Mean 177 124 t = 5.076, df = 9, p =0.001
SD 48.31 43.26
n 10 10

Step 4. Decision

Since the Pvalue= 0.001 is less than the = 0.05, we reject the Ho.
Step 5. Conclusion

The result from the analysis indicates that Drug X has an effect on the eating behavior. The mean values
indicate that significantly less food was consumed after ingestion of Drug X than before.

A nutritionist claims that a particular exercise program will help participants lose weight after a month.
The table shows the weights of 12 adults before participating in the exercise program and one month
after participating in the exercise program. At a= 0.01, can you conclude that the exercise program helps
participants lose weight?

Weight (in lbs)

Participant Before Exercise Program After Exercise Program
1 157 150
2 185 181
3 120 121
4 212 206
5 230 215
6 165 169
7 207 210
8 251 232
9 196 188
10 140 138
11 137 145
12 172 172

STEP 1: Null and Alternative Hypothesis

Ho = The exercise program has no effect on the weight of the participants

Ha = The exercise program helps participants lose weight

STEP 2: Alpha

= 0.01

z = 2.325 and -2.325

STEP 3:

Weight of Participants before and after Paired Differences

Exercise Program Mean = 3.75
SD = 7.84
Tvalue = 1.66
Df = 11
Pvalue = 0.126

STEP 4: Decision

Pvalue
0.126 > 0.01

Since Pvalue = 0.126 is greater than the =0.01, therefore, we dont reject the Ho

STEP 5: Conclusion

The result from the analysis indicates that the exercise program has no effect on the weight of
the participants
3. A Standardized Achievement Test (SAT) preparation course claims to improve the test scores of
students. the table shows the critical reading scores of 10 students the first two times they took the
SAT. Before taking the SAT for the second time, the students took a course to try to improve their critical
reading SAT scores. The test claim at = 0.01.

SAT Score
Student Before After
1 308 456
2 456 524
3 352 409
4 433 491
5 306 348
6 471 583
7 422 451
8 370 408
9 320 391
10 418 450

Step 1. Hypotheses

Ho: The SAT preparation course has no effect on improving the test scores of students.

Ha: The SAT preparation course has an effect on improving the test scores of students.

Step 2.

= 0.01

Step 3. Calculations
Before SAT After SAT Prep Paired Sample t-test
Prep Course Course
Mean 385.60 451.10 Mean = -65.50
SD 62.28 68.48 SD = 37.85
n 10 10 Tvalue = -5.47
Df = 9
Pvalue = 0.000

Step 4. Decision

Since the Pvalue= 0.000 is less than the = 0.01, we reject the Ho.

Step 5. Conclusion

The result from the analysis indicates that SAT preparation course has an effect on improving the test
scores of students. The mean values indicate that significantly, the preparation course has helped
students in taking the exam by increasing the students score by 65-66 points.
