Evaluating Websites

SUBJECT/GRADE: Elementary grades 3-5

OBJECTIVES ALIGNED WITH SPECIFIED ILLINOIS LEARNING STANDARDS/NETS


STANDARDS

Students (Staff) will be able to evaluate websites when researching to determine their validity.

I-SAIL Standards:
1. Access information efficiently and effectively to inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge.
2. Evaluates information critically and competently.
ISTE Standards for Students:
3a. Students plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and other resources for their
intellectual or creative pursuits.
Common Core:
CC.4.RI.9 Integrate information from two texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject
knowledgeably.
AASL Standards for 21st Century Learner:
1.1.4 Find, evaluate, and select appropriate sources to answer questions.
1.1.7 Make sense of information gathered from diverse sources by identifying misconceptions, main and
supporting ideas, conflicting information, and point of view or bias.
1.1.8 Demonstrate mastery of technology tools for accessing information and pursuing inquiry.

You may challenge older students to use these vocabulary words when evaluationg websites:
Currency- timeliness of website, when published, revisions or updates
Relevance- importance to research needs
Authority- the source of the information
Accuracy- reliability, truthfulness, and correctness of information
Purpose- the reason this information exists on the internet

Materials: Student device (Macbooks)


Access to Google Docs and Padlet
Pencil (if you prefer to print docs)
Presentation screen and projector (ability to present to large group)
Handout
Flyers to promote In-Service

For this lesson, the librarian will model to staff during an In-Service. Staff will then have access to the lesson
and can present to their students. The librarian can assist, co-teach, or teach the lesson to grade levels.

It is important to note that we will not be using the CRAAP model with our students, but it is still a great
introduction.

Review answers on Padlet together.

Now, staff will watch this video which would be appropriate for student use.
Evaluating Websites with the 5 W's

GUIDED PRACTICE
At this time, staff will be given this handout. Together, discuss the 5 W model for evaluating websites.
Then, using this tool, staff will choose several websites from the list below to evaluate. Staff may want to work
in partners or grade levels to discuss.

I have included a complete list for staff or students to use during lesson for future reference.
For this specific In-service, staff should click on the first link.

Discuss their initial thoughts on the website based on the video they watched.
Now, they can choose several other websites to evaluate.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
Ask staff to choose one website that they evaluated to present to the group.
During their presentation, they will use the tool to determine the websites helpfulness and validity.
Allow time to discuss.

CLOSURE

Staff will complete a Google Form to explain what they have learned and their confidence level in presenting to
students.
Use the Google Form to plan with staff for further teaching and co-teaching opportunities.
