SUBJECT CODE & TITLE: EC6503-Transmission lines & Waveguides

PART-A (10*2=20)

1. Transmission line has a characteristics impedance of 600 . Determine magnitude of the reflection
coefficient if the receiving end impedance is (650-j475)
2. When will a transmission line deliver maximum power to the load?
3. For the line of zero dissipation, what will be the values of attenuation constant and characteristics
impedance, phase constant and velocity of propagation?
4. Determine K of a line for which ZR=200 , ZO=692-12 .
5. What is the transformation utilized for formulating the smith chart?
6. Give an application of circle diagram.
7. Determine the value of L required by a constant K t section high pass filter with a cut off frequency of
1.5 KHz and design impedance of 500.
8. Draw the equivalent circuit for a piezoelectric crystal.
9. Write the expressions of , fc, and of a TM wave in a circular waveguide.
10. For a frequency of 6 GHz and plane separation of 3 cm, find the group and phase velocities for the
dominant mode.

11. a) i What are the types of waveform distortion introduced by a transmission line? Derive the
Conditions for the distortion less operation of a transmission line. (10)
ii) Transmission line has a characteristics impedance of 600 . Determine magnitude of the

b) A Cable has the following parameters R=48.75 /km, L=1.09 mH/km, G=38.75 mho/
km, C=0.059F/km. Determine the characteristics impedance, propagation constant and
wavelength for a source of f= 1600Hz and ES=1V. (13)

12. a) i) Derive the expression that permits easy measurement of power flow on a line of negligible
losses. (07)
ii) Derive the expression for input impedance of open and short circuited lines. (06)

b) An air filled co-axial line of copper is to have a capacitor of 22 PF per meter. The inner
conductor has a diameter of 0.1 cm. Calculate the inductance of the line. Find the inner
radius of the outer conductor. What is the characteristics impedance of the line? Find the
phase constant and wavelength at a frequency of 25MHz, neglecting dissipation. (13)

13. a) Design a single stub matching network (use smith chart) for a transmission line functioning
at 500MHz terminated with a load impedance ZL=300+j250 and with a characteristics
impedance ZO =100.Use short circuited shunt stubs. Determine the VSWR before and after
connecting the stub. (13)

b) Discuss the following: i) Impedance matching. (05)
ii) Single and double stub matching. (08)

14. a) Draw and explain the design and operation of m-derived T-section band pass filter with
necessary equations and diagrams. (13)

b) Explain the principle and operation of crystal filters with neat diagrams. (13)

15. a) Describe the propagation of TE waves in a rectangular waveguide with necessary expressions
for the field components. (13)

b) i) Describe the principle and operation of rectangular cavity resonators with relevant

16. a) A pair of perfectly conducting planes is separated by 8 cm in air. For a frequency of 5000 MHz
with the TM1 mode excited find the following: (i) Cutoff frequency, (ii) Characteristics impedance,
(iii) Attenuation constant for f=0.95fc, (iv) Phase shift, (v) Phase velocity and group velocity,
(vi) Wavelength measured along the guided walls, (vii) Critical Angle, (viii) Angle of incidence.
