CLASSIFICATION: ODONATA
The classification adopted here, with the exception of the Gomphidae, is largely traditional and is based primarily
on: Fraser (1957. A reclassification of the Order Odonata. Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales,
133pp). The classification of the Gomphidae follows: Carle (1986. The classification, phylogeny and biogeography
of the Gomphidae (Anisoptera). I. Classification. Odonatologica 15(3): 275-326). Parts of the classification are
unsatisfactory and phylogenetic studies will alter the classification considerably. Such a new classification has
recently been proposed by Bechly (1996. Morphologische Untersuchungen am Flgelgeder der rezenten Libeeen
und deren Stammgruppenvertreter (insecta; Pterygota; Odonata). Petalura, spec.-vol. 2: 402 pp., 111 figs., 3 tabs.

Annotations and comments on the Check List

General Comments:

1. Date of publication of Hagen and Se1ys, Monographie des Gomphines: I follow Calvert (1905. Biologia Centrali
Americana: 148), who states in a footnote: "It is usual to quote the "Monographie des Gomphines" with the date
1857, as is done by Kirby [1890] for example, and "November 1857" is, indeed, that which appears on the title
page of the volume; but the original paper cover bore the date "Mai 1858," which has usually not been preserved in
bound copies. Moreover, plates xx-xxii are dated at the bottom as having been drawn in 1858." Cowley (1937. J.
Soc. Bibliography Nat. Hist. 1(3):73-74) opted for 1857, but further evidence of an 1858 publication date was
brought to my attention by P. Machet. In the "appendice" (page 651 [391 separate]) is stated: "Some
circumstances having put off the conclusions of this volume, considerable and rather numerous materials have
reached us during printing [italics mine]. One comes from a trip made by H. Hagen to London in 1857; others
from a shipment of species from Texas, made by the Smithsonian Institution."
2. I give synonyms, nomina nuda, etc., only for New World taxa for Holarctic species such as Enallagma
cyathigerum and Libellula quadrimaculata. The single exception is Crocothemis servilia servilia, an Old World
species recently introduced into peninsular Florida.

Specific Comments:

1. Aeshna clepsydra with synonyms arundinacea Se1ys 1872 and maxima Heikal in Hisinger 1861. The latter
two names have often been included as synonyms of A. clepsydra. My reason for their deletion is based on a
footnote by Walker to Muttkowski (1910. Cat. Odon.: 109):
"Walker in litteris Aug. 14, 1909: 'The synonyms given by you do not belong to the true clepsydra. A.
arundinacea and maxima I have not seen: It is very probable that the first at least is a good species."' And,

"Walker in litteris, Sept. 24, 1909: 'Some of the references ... do not refer to true clepsydra...I am quite sure
arundinacea is not clepsydra, but as I have not seen the type it is probably best to let it stand as a synonym of
the latter on the authority of Martin'."
Curiously, I can find no mention of these little-used names in Walker's 1912 monograph. The original
description of arundinacea is based on a female from "Irkutzk", and Se1ys states it is similar to Siberian A.
juncea. According to Dr. Matti Hmlinen, University of Helsinki, in a letter to me, A. maxima is a junior
synonym of the Old World Aeshna crenata Hagen. I have found no records of clepsydra occurring anywhere in
the Palearctic, and I strongly suspect that arundinacea refers to a species other than the North American
clepsydra.
2. Triacanthagyna obscuripennis Blanchard. Williamson, in his monograph of this genus (1923. Univ. Mich.
Mus. Zool. Misc. Publ. 9:1-80), believed this to be a possible synonym of T. septima; but P. Machet believes,
after examining the short description and figure by Blanchard, that it may be of the trifida group, and possibly a
synonym of one of the later described species. Should this be the case (if the type is found), I would not be in
favor of using this name, I list obscuripennis as a distinct species, but it should, in my opinion, be considered a
nomen dubium or a nomen obletum, if and when its status is determined.
3. Gomphus complex. The status of the various genera/subgenera of North American entities has not been
satisfactorily resolved. I have not studied the problems, but have largely followed the advice of others. In this
list, I do not recognize the subgenus Stenogomphurus nor do I accept elevation of the subgenus Gomphurus to
generic status since there appears to be questions of their validity and changes in the literature as follows: Carle
(Carle, F. L. 1986. The classification, phylogeny and biogeography of the Gomphidae (Anisoptera). I.
Classification. Odonatologica 15(3): 275-326.) proposed the subgenus Stenogomphurus (type species:
Gomphus consanguis) under the large genus Gomphus. However, G. consanguis has always been included
under the subgenus Gomphurus of Gomphus. Carle (1986) also raises Gomphurus to generic status, but does
not key or diagnose between Gomphus and Gomphurus. He does not explain his reason for removing G.
consanguis from Gomphus and placing it in the new subgenus, Stenogomphurus. It would appear that he
never diagnosed Stenogomphurus from Gomphus. Carle (1986) does not discuss the relationship between
Gomphurus and Gomphus sensu lato, and gives no reason for the elevation of Gomphurus to generic status.
Therefore, I will continue to treat Gomphurus as a subgenus of Gomphus. Phanagomphus is also not
recognized in this list for the following reason: Carle (Carle, F. L. 1986. The classification, phylogeny and
biogeography of the Gomphidae (Anisoptera). I. Classification. Odonatologica 15(3): 275-326.) proposed the
subgenus Phanogomphus (type species: Gomphus minutus Rambur), which Carle & May (Carle, F. L. & M. L.
May. 1987. Gomphus (Phanogomphus) westfalli spec. nov. from the gulf coast of Florida (Anisoptera:
Gomphidae). Odonatologica 16(1): 67-75) later expanded to include other species of Gomphus (Gomphus).
Many Odonatists, including myself, consider Phanogomphus a subjective synonym of the type species of
Gomphus, G. vulgatissimus (Linnaeus). I treat Arigomphus as a separate genus from Gomphus.
Hylogomphus is considered a synonym of Gomphus (Gomphus), following Carle (1986). I realize that this
arrangement will probably not be satisfactory to many, but a final resolution may not be achieved for several
years.
Carle (in. May, M and F. Carle, 1996. An annotated list of the Odonata of New Jersey, with an appendix on
nomenclature in the genus Gomphus. Bulletin of Odonatology 4(1):1-35) has defended his actions regarding the
introduction of the names discussed above. That such an appendix was written and the acknowledgement that
several workers were in doubt about the proper introduction of new taxa and changes illustrates, in my opinion,
the continued confusion by this author's actions.
4. CORDULEGASTRIDAE: In a recent paper, 1992. Revision der Cordulegastridae. 1. Entwurfeiner neuen
Klassifizierung der Familie (Odonata: Anisoptera). Opuscula Zoologica Fluminensia 96:1-18, H. Lohmann has
performed a cladistic analysis on the family, with the result that our eight species are allocated to six genera as
follows:

While I admire the treatment of this family by Lohmann, I do not think it serves science to split our American
species from one into six genera. Carle, in an earlier paper (1983. Ann. Entomol. Soc. Amer. 76(1):61-68) also
recognized Zoraena and Taeniogaster, but his divisions do not seem to have been followed by Odonatists in this
country. I still consider all of our species in one genus, Cordulegaster. However, I include the above data for
those who wish to make changes.
5. Both Dr. Ken Tennessen and Mr. Carl Cook inform me that Neurocordulia clara Muttkowski is more closely
related to N. molesta, although Cook believes N. clara a good species. I have treated it as a synonym of N.
molesta.
6. Ken Tennessen (in litt.) informs me that he believes Epitheca (Tetragoneuria) williamsoni Muttkowski to be a
probable synonym of E. costalis.
7. Erythrodiplax connata complex. I include some nomenclatoral changes which are not in accord with Borror
1942 (Ohio State Univ. Contr. Zool. Entomol., No. 4). Other Odonatists and I treat E. minuscula and E. fusca
as separate species based on an absence of intergrades with E. connata (despite the fact that Borror reports such
specimens in his monograph)..
8. Libellula bifasciata Blanchard. The type for this old, forgotten name was discovered by Lieftinck to be L.
semifasciata, not L. pulchella, according to Dr. M.J. Westfall, Jr. (pers. comm.). As with Triacanthagyna
obscuripennis, I think it best to consider L. bifasciata a nomen obletum.

Status of specific names not mentioned in this list:

1. Enallagma optimolocus Miller & Ivae, 1995 (Proceedings of the Entomological Society of Washington
97(4):833-838). I reviewed an earlier draft of the manuscript, have one paratype in my collection and also
examined a specimen supposedly of this species from Oregon (Crook County, South Fork Crooked River, nr.
confluence with North Fork, 10 Aug. 1994, Ken J. Tennessen, collector). I strongly believe that this taxon is only
a hybrid between E. anna and E. carunculatum for the following reasons: No females of E. optimolocus have
been collected and this "species" has always been collected where the two parental types occur. Examination of
two paratypes and the Oregon male, the last kindly loaned to me by Dr. Ken Tennessen, show appendage
morphology intermediate between the parental types. Hybridization between other Enallagma species is known
and hybrids intermediate in appendage morphology have been produced in the laboratory and occur in nature for
two closely related species, Ischnura denticollis and I. gemina (Leong, J. M. & J. E. Hafernick, Jr. 1992.
Hybridization between two damselfly species (Odonata: Coenagrionidae): morphometric and genitalic
differentiation. Annals of the Entomological Society of America 85(6): 662-670).
2. Gomphus williamsoni Muttkowski, 1910. This name based on only one known specimen, is almost certainly a
natural hybrid between Gomphus (Gomphus) graslinellus and Gomphus (Gomphus) lividus.
3. Macromia wabashensis Williamson, 1909. Until recently, consensus among most U. S. Odonatists was to treat
Macromia wabashensis as a synonym or color form (polymorph) of M. taeniolata. Secondary genitalia
including the shape of the head of the hamule for M. pacifica, M. wabashensis, and M. taeniolata is similar.

Williamson (1909 Proc. U. S. Nat. Museum 37:369-398.) reports captures of M. wabashensis with Macromia
taeniolata and M. pacifica, which suggests the possibility that M. wabashensis is a hybrid between M. pacifica
and M. taeniolata. Other mostly non-published data suggest the occurrence of both M. pacifica and M.
taeniolata wherever M. wabashensis has been collected. Like Dunkle (1995. Conservation of dragonflies
(Odonata) and their habitats in North America. page 23 in Corbet, P. S., S. W. Dunkle, H. Ubukata, eds.
Proceedings of the International symposium on the conservation of dragonflies and their habitats. Japanese
Society for the Preservation of Birds, Kushiro, xii + 1-70), I am doubtful of according species status to M.
wabashensis. Acquisition of more specimens and the discovery of the female may help to determine its true
status. I suggest that multivariate morphometric analyses of available specimens of M. wabashensis and samples
of M. taeniolata and M. pacifica from zones of sympatry with M. wabashensis may provide evidence about
whether M. wabashensis is a hybrid.
